  • It's ballyhoo rigging time!
    In particular, naked ballyhoo circle hook time!
    Want to know the best (and quickest) way to rig ballyhoo when using a cirlce hook (IGFA rules while fishing for billfish in tournaments)?
    Then check out this awesome ballyhoo rigging tip from the guys at Ripper Fishing.
    See the full blog post here: www.saltstrong.com/fishing-ti...
    Some of the most important tips from this bluewater fishing video:
    1) Troll your naked ballyhoo 4-6 knots. Anything more will have you rigging new baits all day long
    2) Use a heavy wire circle hook. It's not worth taking the risk of losing a big marlin or tuna
    3) Keep it simple. You don't need a bunch of wire or fancy dressing. Just a simple rubber band and an non-offset circle hook will do

    Thanks for the tip. And kudos to the camera person - excellent close, focused shots so that the viewer can actually see what you're doing.

    What size rubber band would you use for a medium sized ballyhoo?

  • @ACRBunny

    Could you use this rig trolling for other predator species such as Kings, Mahi etc.

    • @vpadfsu
      @vpadfsu Před 7 lety

      Nick George marlin are big fish and typically swallow your entire bait. Might work for king but use wire. Mahi you would def want to have hook further back...feeding hook through gills of ballyhoo...better chance of hooking...

      I rig them with an o-ring, wire, and chin weight for white marlin in OC, MD. We catch dolphin on them often, but you still have to feed them. Even when we are tuna fishing with J-hooks rigged back in the ballyhoo, we feed them if it doesn't come tight right away and we know it's not a tuna bite. As for toothy critters, I wouldn't recommend it because they have a tendency to strike short of the hook. Also, you'd want to rig with wire when targeting them.

    Can you troll with this rig, or is it for dropping back only?

    One of these how to ballyhoo channels says to remove the guts. That the bait will last much longer. Anybody know about that?

      @adrenalizeoutdoorproductio9688 Před 6 lety +1

      GabooNx They have. Williamson makes one. When you are circle hook fishing, you need the fish to taste it and eat it, then swim away with it swallowed in order to come tight. We usually try to hold the rod the whole time in freespool with our thumb on the spool anticipating the bite so that the fish never feels the line until we come tight. Experienced guys even turn the clicker off.
