- It's been nearly 13 years since my first gamebook, The Legion of Shadow, was published - with many versions following - so, ahead of my walkthrough guide, I thought I would share my thoughts on revisiting this 'problematic' gamebook.

Legion of Shadow was my introduction to gamebooks as a genre, since I somehow slept through the golden age of them. 👍
I use them for my "video game fix" during the extended power outages of hurricane season. 🕯🎲
I'm glad that you came to love the book again. In my opinion the book does many new and great things that vastly outweigh the imperfections.
They are all great and all have their idiosyncrasies (because they are written by a passionate human being). I'm so glad I stumbled on these books and I hope you keep writing them. I just got the first in the Raiders books and am looking forward to playing them with my child who didn't even exist when the first book came out and is now writing their own choose your own adventure style books.

Legion of Shadows was my first Destiny Quest book, and although the later books indeed are technically better my fondest memories are with the first book.
Also I love Elden Ring and the DLC for that game is out later this week and I’m quite excited.
My next gamebook is inspired by Elden Ring.

I don’t know if I’m using the mechanic correctly, but I found an early game item called “Demon’s Heart” with the Trickster ability, and I am pretty much unstoppable.
I get hit from time to time, but that ability to switch a speed die makes me feel quite powerful.
Die Rolling Pro Tip: I roll 5 dice at once for typical combat. 2 green for my attack, 2 red for the enemy’s attack, and a yellow die for damage. Speeds things up immensely.
@@madmandu you can only use trickster once per combat. Same goes for all special abilities unless otherwise stated ;-)
Your, 'I sometimes wish it could be fired off into space' line is something I've said word for word about my first gamebook as well, lol. But yeah, great video! I'm really enjoying these CZcams uploads! Glad you came around on Elden Ring, too. It took me a little while as a big Dark Souls fan, myself, but I ended up adoring it!

By the way, I remember on Twitter saying I hated Elden Ring (back in the day) and you said 'you are mad!' or words to that effect. I thought of you when I was recording the last bits of this ha ha
@@destinyquestgame Hehe, yeah. I ate, slept, and breathed that game for months upon release once I accustomed myself to changes like the jump button and open world nature. It took a few days to really click, but once it did, it was magnificent!
Had a blast with it. Yes, some rough bits, but enjoyed it enough that I want to buy a physical copy of it and the rest of the series (yes, I played the kindle version 😅).
Well, you are certified hardcore! The rest of the series will probably be a breeze!
I liked the book up to a point and then it felt like just one hard fight after another to get to the end. I’m afraid its the only one I no longer have. I own all of your books minus Legion. My first book was Heart of Fire and that’s my favourite game book of all time. I think its fair to say your prowess at writing game books has improved massively from Legion of Shadow. What has remained consistent however is your prose. Your writing is so good I would dearly love you to write a standard novel based in Dormus!
Thank you. Yes, Legion of Shadow is very much the 'black sheep' of my family of gamebooks. Things ramp up massively in Heart of Fire (from a story, game, and balancing standpoint) and continue (I hope!) to do so for each successive book.
Hi Michael, I want to get started playing gamebooks. I stumbled upon your series and have been checking out your videos. Would you still recommend Legion of Shadow as a starting point? Im new to the gamebook genre but am an avid RPG and DnD player.
Tough one. Honestly, I'd say Heart of Fire OR Raiders of Dune Sea. I think Legion of Shadow is too linear and lacks compelling choices, so I think you would find it lacking. Dive into Heart of Fire or Raiders of Dune Sea and you will be in for a treat!

Maybe you could rewrite and republish it as "The Legion of Shadows: Remake!" or something? Would love the book to have the same main plot but whole new mechanics to it like Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Well, hold that thought. "Time" is a great healer as they say...
are all the books uniform in size now? plan to buy them but im very weird person and would need all the books to be the same size on my shelf haha otherwise I might skip book 1 as I read its a taller book compared to the others. cheers
The paperbacks are all the same size, don't worry! ;-)
