Elle Woods had a 4.0 GPA, participated in many school activities including charitable ones and got a 179/180 on her LSATS. Yet because she was blonde and enjoyed fashion everyone treated her like she was dumb.
@@nicholast4137 It's not always about traditional qualifications, but also the unique perspectives and experiences individuals bring. Elle proved that there's more than one way to be smart and succeed!
@@nicholast4137 Ah yes, I remember my time at "the diversity." 😂 I wonder how my non-white, non-straight, non-cis male colleagues are doing.

My cousin is a contract lawyer and this is her favorite movie, because "with that LSAT score, a 4.0 GPA, a degree in Fashion Merchadising, and president of her sorority, she didn't just get in, she's there on a full scholarship!"
My least favorite part of the movie is when the committee reviewing her application is comically reaching for reasons she's "technically" good enough to attend Harvard when in reality they would have been offering assistance to make it even easier for her to go.
What year was this movie? When I took the LSATs, the scores did not go that high. You needed a 40 to get into a good law school and a 30 to get into most. I didn’t not have a perfect LSAT but I had a 3.7 GPA in a dual bachelor’s program (prelaw and premed). Also my letters of recommendation were from a top lawyer/alumnae and a professor from the University. Its not hard to get into Harvard unless they have a lot of alumni children, who don’t need to meet the same requirements. They get moved to the head of the admission list just for being a child of an alumnus. Of course, they are generally the ones who are not there 2nd year because they fail or quit because it’s too hard. In orientation, we were told to look to our left and our right and half of the people you saw would not make it to 2nd year.
@@penny1186 2004, i think?

Yea right.
The power of representation. This film was such a great example that you can be feminine and powerful. So many times women feel like they have to act and dress more masculine in order to be respected and it sucks. It should be up to personal preference only, and as long the attire is appropriate and functional there should be no discrimination against one type of clothing.
Was it difficult? I'm 16 and really wanna get into law school

@@yumchain6957 Point taken but she's very sure of the fact that she can get into Harvard. So, I'm talking about that side of things.
@yumchain6957 Yeah, but she keeps being herself despite endless mockery for her girliness. It was only during the plot twist where her teacher revealed to only seeing her as a piece of meat that she actually questioned who she really wanted to be.
Uhm fashion is a multi billion dollar business and you need some lawyers who know 1-2 things about it
Unfortunately fashion is pretty looked down upon.
@@sleepwalking3345 that’s the case with most arts, sadly
That is so true.
Actually, it's really necesary in fashion industry, that's why inside the program now they teach the basics of fahion law. At least in my school we had that course.
fashion is fcking up the planet too
Another reminder: it doesn’t matter what your undergrad major is! You can major in literally anything you want to get into law school. It doesn’t have to be pre-law or political science; law schools don’t really care. Just get good grades, and a good score. They actually really like a diversity of people and majors and interests, so it might actually help you than hurt you.
It's same with a lot of things, the intro major/degree is usually unrelated. Like with teaching, you can get a bachelor of arts in something the highschool doesn't even teach and then get your last year of the education degree.
Yeah, she showed how helpful it can be to have that diversity
It’s technically the same for med school as well. All that really matters is what you score on the MCAT and your gpa.
@@kyleellis1825Then that person is not properly prepared to be a teacher. You need to study the subject u're gonna teach for at least 4 years, like any other degree.
@@TheStepmonkey No you don't. An english major teacher can teach any of the humanities/electives without any training. They just can't teach the math/science ones. Same thing with the science major teachers not being able to teach english/history.
There’s tons of lawyers involved in the fashion world, I think they would be impressed. Not to mention I know someone who majored in fashion, excelled in textiles, and now works in a museum making top dollar because she can figure out exactly what time period each fabric that comes in was from.
That's so cool!

The irony is that I've watched a few CZcams takes from lawyers on LB now, and all of them say that this scene is nonsense because law schools literally do not care what you got your undergraduate degree in.
Filming her essay, on the other hand...
Well, it's not nonsense that a high school guidance counselor might give bogus advice.
@@Anonymous-54545 True, but I always felt the movie wanted us to agree that it was surprising a fashion student would want to study law, let alone be accepted into Harvard. That said, you're right that advice can be terrible.
@@test-kf2zv I think the movie wants us to agree that someone like this stereotype seeking (and getting) acceptance into an elite school defies conventional wisdom, and thus is in that sense surprising, while at the same time conveying the idea we shouldn't be surprised this particular person is applying. At no time are we ever supposed to think "what is she doing?!" except to the extent that we should be concerned she'll be discriminated against.
@@Anonymous-54545 she’s not a high school counsellor, she’s a college academic advisor. elle is in college at the start of the movie, hence why she lives in a sorority.

"I don't need backups!" - You're destined for success when you're prepared and your mind works like that! This movie so reflected how people discount and doubt others without knowing what they're capable of.
I like how her guidance counselor eventually got with the program and gave her a road map to get there. I suppose both literally and figuratively.
Didn't get into Harvard with fashion 4.0, or her determination, Elle got into Harvard with the effort, practice, practice, practice and hard work. A little bit of luck helped, but we all get lucky once we put in the effort.

Hey, law schools would be happy to have a student with a merchandising degree, as you learn amazing skills in that field, regardless of what you’re merchandising
Elle Woods WAS the prize, any school would have been lucky to have her!
Some of us DO need back ups, and there is nothing wrong with that
Exactly!
yeah, it's very normal to have backups. Elle just didnt need backups because she didnt actually want to be a lawyer, the whole point was to get the guy
No, it isn't a bad thing. Nevertheless, I never had backups my whole life. In my experience having a backup expresses you don't really believe in yourself succeeding. Therefore your brain gets distracted and you don't focus fully on your goal and therefore it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy to need a backup.
@@summersun6536that's precisely why i don't make backups either; because of the ability to get distracted. just work towards one goal at time and IF it doesn't work out, re-explore your options after having learned new information to apply to the new decision/course of action. but in the meantime, give it all you've got. to me, that's truly experiencing and living life
@@summersun6536 yeah, maybe for someone like you or Elle. For others, having a backup removes anxiety and helps them focus on their goal.

“You got into Harvard?!”
“What, like it’s hard?”
She's like me. I was always like I don't need backups and I got into the universities I wanted to. It's good to be confident, it keeps you focused. This movie reminds me of that when I forget.
Okay but why wouldn't they be impressed? Law school requires lots of memorization skills. She has them, if she has a 4.0 GPA with courses such as 'the history of polka dots'. It also requires people skills. You can't have a 4.0 in merchandising if you don't have those. So especially for law it makes sense.
definitely a _significant_ amount of writing for business too. which would've been taught well and graded strictly at someplace like UCLA. it isnt a stretch by any means to say an undergrad like that was just fine for harvard law.
@@asterling4 that too! Also having an eye for trends requires a certain level of analytical skills.
And there are tons of lawyers that specialize in business contracts, so the law school would assume she wanted to eventually go into that, combining her skills to start her own fashion business or work for one already established. Knowing the business from the fashion side, marketing & what people will like is 1 part but if she also has the skills to write & review contracts for that business then even better. She won't get tripped up by legal speak & she knows what's important to be included in the contracts that might affect the quality of production & therefore the image & funds of the company.
As a person who went to law school, I 100% encourage making sure you have back up schools. Makes things much more smooth and more comfortable during the application process.
“I don’t need backups I’m going to Harvard”
“What? Like it’s hard” 😂

the schools probably knew they were his safety schools
Just a reminder from a tutor - you're not in a movie. Have backups! ❤
What are backups?
@@deathbyathousandcats backups are basically other colleges that you should apply to incase you don’t get into your desired uni.
@@aliyaze44 Oh, thank you for the answer.
you sound fun
I didn't have back ups and went where I wanted. Most of these universities just want to make sure you can pay them for the courses. Other than that, if you have low ACTS or whatever they need, usually these schools have classes you can take to raise the score or take additional courses before you take college level courses.
Fashion Merchandising is a business major, which isn’t that unusual for a law student to do in undergrad. Combine that with the stellar GPA, almost perfect LSAT, and leadership skills from being sorority president (of quite a prestigious sorority considering successful women like Brooke were former Delta Nus) Elle didn’t need to be admitted for diversity, Harvard should have been begging her to come.

It's my 42nd birthday so i feel like I'm allowed to give some advice at the moment. You may not need back ups, but i think you also shouldn't get too attached to any one plan. You haven't even been there yet, you don't even know if you'll like it! Open yourself up to ALL kinds of things, all kinds of schools, all kinds of lifestyles, all kinds of people and places. Go experience a wide variety of stuff and then make an informed decision about what you actually want. It's all back ups until you have enough information to really make an informed choice.
Love this :) yes we are all aware this is relating to a wonderous & delightful movie lol. But commenter took the time to give truly good advice.
She was so cute in that movie!
As someone who went to fashion school I can almost guarantee there are no history of poka dots classes lol. History of fashion, sure. But not JUST poka dots
I’d be happy to teach one! There’s enough material there to do it.
I would disagree, I bet there are. Remember, she goes to a prestigious rich people school. They may have a bunch of these fun credit courses that choose to specify in topics. You as a graduate in fashion, I bet you could create a course based only on history of poka dots. I took a degree in American and British Literature, we literally had an option classes that covered only "The Beatles," "Edgar Poe," "King Arthur Legends," etc. There are general courses, but once you're done, you could take these "specialized" courses.
I love this movie. Don't ever let other people tell you who YOU are.
I love this movie and I love Elle as a character so much, I really wish we got more protagonists like this.
As someone not from the US, I’m honestly scared by the college entry system there.
Here in Australia, all you have to do is be smarter than like 50% of the population, and you can get into pretty much any undergraduate course at pretty much any university, except medicine, dentistry, and the like. There’s none of this “participated in extracurriculars for years” or “is literally a world class athlete” or “volunteered for a summer in Africa” or letters of recommendation or even meeting with or submitting anything like an essay to the university itself.
Literally all we do is write down a list of universities and courses on a piece of paper, and based on our Year 12 ATAR results (standardised testing for each subject), each university will either offer us a place or not.
I'm from Ireland. Never understood why the USA has two different exams for high school diploma and college admission.
That they're then pushed into studying things in university that have nothing to do with their degree or goals in order to be "well rounded" and can face compulsory shared bedrooms makes all those extra hoops to jump through even worse
@@morbidsearchwell it can be helpful to somebody. In Italy it's the same, your high school exams vote literally doesn't matter (it is useful to get university tax cuts though). You just have to do well in the entrance exams, which only exist for some faculties and/or some prestigious universities. And those entrance exams are much easier to prepare for than the final high school exams, since they're more specific and you don't have to study other subjects in the meantime. Except medicine of course.
@@morbidsearch In the US system, law (and medicine, among others) are graduate degrees you wouldn't apply to until you're nearly complete with your 4-year bachelors degree. By that point, your high school tests are completely irrelevant.
I understand in some countries you go directly into law/medicine programs after high school, that's probably where the confusion is.
Here in Mexico, you just have to pass a standard exam. It is literally the same for everybody regardless of their chosen program. That being said: I majored in French, and I did the same entry exam as my friends who are doctors. However, the only programs that require extra steps are the art programs: you have to go to different interviews, auditions, and extra tests, but other than that, admissions are pretty meh.
Of course, they only accept a specific number of applicants per career, so it's not like everyone gets the chance to enter even if they get almost perfect scores. I've seen many get rejected with 99% scores out of med school because there are not many places available. I was lucky that in my program, they offered 75 places, but only 64 people did the exam that year (but I mean, it's French).
I’ve always loved the advisor’s voice, especially how she says “history of polka dots”, such a fun unique voice

While it might sound unusual at 1st, getting a law degree to go with her business degree in fashion merchandising really does make sense & shouldn't shock the advisor. If she was wanting to run her own fashion-based business in the future then being more familiar with the legal side of the business helps insure you don't get trapped into bad deals. Just like medicine, law school starts with basics in each category & then you can decide to specialize. So there are many lawyers out there who specialize in business contracts & make big money being kept on retainer by a handful or even just 1 company. She wouldn't even have to run her own business or be a designer but be involved in fashion by working with a fashion label on the business side.
