    Another amazing creation from Rob Machado. Rob is making me one broke surfer. For that reason, I think I officially hate him (kidding of course). I highly recommend this board. In fact, depending on the size you get, it could fit in your quiver as a groveler, super groveler, ultimate groveler, and/or a mid-length.
    I bought the 6'0 because I wanted a board that was about 38 to 40 Liters. I know for a fact that the 5'6 and 5'9 would surf better for me in terms of performance but I wanted something longer. I was hoping for a board around 6'4 but the 6'4 Sunday came in at 45L which is above my duck dive limit. Because I surf a beach break mostly, it made sense to get one that I could duck dive. If I surfed a point break or a reef break, I might have gone with the 6'8 to make it a mid-length since it has a longboard fin box.
    But in the end, I am very happy with the 6'0. The ways this board was designed, I would love to test out the 5'6, 5'9, and 6'8. But since budgets are limited, I chose the one right in the middle.
    Take a look at this video and let me know what you think.

    Hey Thomye, I did in fact end up buying the board in part due to this video and the one about your 6'8! I ended up with the 6'4 but at 165lbs and around your age, I've so far found it works pretty much like you described in the 6'8 vid, namely that paddling for small waves is hilariously trivial, especially compared to the tiny shorties I usually pretend to ride. Still getting used to the board but thanks for making these videos!

    Hey Thom! I just ordered a Sunday (one of two that I could find pretty much anywhere in the size I wanted). I got a 6'4" to fill that gap in my quiver, both in terms of length and volume. I'm fully expecting it to basically be the board I use most here in my weak, east coast waves. And also - my ultimate "dad board" - I plan to catch so many more waves with it than my shorter boards and to say I am stoked is a huge understatement! I haven't ridden the CI Mid yet. 😥 As for choosing between the Seaside & Beyond vs the Sunda, it depends on the height. if you told me which 6'8, although I haven't ridden the 6'8 Sunday and I don't know for sure, I suspect I would go with the S&B because it is 40L vs the Sunday which is 48L. If you told me go with what I thought I was going to use more often and in more condition, the 6'0 Sunday. The Sunday 6'0 is 38.2L while the 6'8 S&B is 40. Having said that, since I surf a beach break, volume factors in a lot, being able to duck dive. If I surfed a reef or point, it wouldn't matter as much in the longer sizes.

    Great review so what are the top 3 boards in the Rob quiver now? Is the Sunday replacing the Seaside and Beyond?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 3 lety +2

      you asked probably the toughest question. Making me decide. LOL
      1) Modern2. Not for most but I like it and it has been very consistent in performance for me. Having said that, if there was a version of the seaside that was longer and narrower made for a bit more performance, I might have to scrap the M2. I love the bottom contours of Seaside but I do love how the 5'6 M2 surfs like a 5'3 but has better swing weight and longer rail line.
      2) Twice Baked 5'3". this is my best small wave board. by small I mean 1' to 2'. However wave height is only one factor of many. If the waves at 2' got fast and punchy, I'd go to the M2. If a 3' wave was super soft, I'd hang up my M2 and go with a twice baked.
      3) Sunday for versatility and fun factor. Having said that it would be the 6'0 sunday. If you asked me to pick a 6'8, then I'd pick the beyond as the Sunday has a tad too much literage and becomes too thick.
      So many people want me to compare the Sunday to the S&B but it's not that simple. if I were to compare the two at the same liters, then you would have to compare the 6'0 to the 6'8 and right away, the 6'0 will have wat more performance inherent to the board. When then if I wanted a mid length for performance something 6'8 and bigger, then the S&B is better at performance but not as good at groveling unless you opt for the Timber Tech version.
      The only thing I will say, and I have said it many times, the Sunday up to now has been the most fun to review. It has surprised me as a twin, 2+1, 1+2. Not so much a single, but that was more me. All in all, if I had no choice, I would keep me Sunday over the S&B. I did recently ride a 6'8 Sunday and even then, I'll pick mid length glide and cruising over 6'8 performance so, Sunday Sunday Sunday. :)

    Hey thomye
    I started watching this vid telling myself I don’t want a Sunday, I don’t want a Sunday… now I’m
    Not too sure, Dam it.
    Based on your vid’s, I was super keen on the twice baked, as I don’t really have a groveller. Now, I’m not too sure which one.
    Over in Aus, the FW boards are bloody expensive, plus fins, pads, leggie etc. so I only buy a board every few years.
    I’m 51 years old, 6’3” tall and 190 pounds. Only get out around twice a month.
    My regular board is a spitfire, 6’8” - 48 ltrs. So I’m used to high volume boards.
    Typing this out, maybe the Sunday is too similar to the spitfire, so I’ll keep my cash for the twice baked when there back in stock.
    Thanks for all your vids. Love them and I’ll tell FW to hook you up. The new mashup sounds fun too. Be great to see you review that.
    Cheers mate,
    Jason - Victoria

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 2 lety +1

      yeah, i think volume wise you might be right about the 6'8 spit and Sunday being similar. they would be about the same length. What size TB were you looking to get. Keep in mind, that something like the 5'11 TB although slightly less volume than your Spit, still is a better groveler cuz it's wider and all the 45Liters will be concentrated in a shorter package where you paddle and need it for most. Hope that makes sense. As a comparison and example, I used to have a 5'8 dominator, i think it was 31L. I also had the 5'1 Baked Potato which was 29L. The BP groveled better. it was 1.25" wider and all 29L was literally under my chest. While the 5'8 Dom spread the volume out to places I would not feel it paddling, like the nose.
      the 1.25" width also helped it plane so much better. You can't really go wrong in my opinion, they are both so fun.

    • @jasonmathwin8907
      @jasonmathwin8907 Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the reply mate. I was thinking about a 6’1 (47) or 6’3 (51) TB, based on the litres , surf frequency, my height and skill level (avg intermediate).
      I hear what you’re saying about all the foam under your chest, so the 6’1 could still work well.
      I’d be using this kind of board, on high tide, small swell days where my log isn’t right, as the waves aren’t long. So a board to pick up waves very easy, but easy to manoeuvre would be great. Much easier in the car too 😂
      Cheers again for your reply and all the vids mate. It’s amazing all the little tips I’ve picked up from the vids. Even waxing up,, and straight front leg on my back side turns. love Em

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 3 lety +1

      it seemed fine in all the conditions I've surfed so far. Having surfed the Seasdie, Spitfire, and other Helium boards for years, I found that the chatter only comes into play in certain conditions: heavy off shore winds where it creates a texture on the surface. In those conditions, the board is pretty annoying but in the last 10 years of surfing these boards, I have only surfed those conditions twice. So the positives of buoyancy, strength, and lightness of swing weight far outweigh the negatives for me. Also, maybe I'm used to it now too.
      On this board, one thing I did notice and I'll have to mention it on the next fin test, is that since it is 38 L, it does keep me out of the water and it pushes back more than other boards. So, I felt like my feet hurt. When I would do a heelside turn, my heels felt my weight where as on smaller boards, when I push, they push into the water a bit so the pressure gets slightly absorbed. Hope that is making sense.

BUT..I can feel the big volume of my grazer mayne getting in the way when I'm trying to get better with my cutbacks..like it need a bigger or more space/open face to get a good cutback in..or maybe I need same type of board with a squash tail..OR ..I just need to learn how to put more weight on my back foor(I'm heavy front footer!)..SO..I want to try a more nimble board..but not a drastist change and regret it by the the loss of volume. The SUNDAY at 6' will have 38liter and have head it has more pinched rails? Do you think the sunday is a good choice? Or as a thruster..even with less volume 6' @38lit as a thruster I wOnt get more performance as my glazer 6'1"@45liters. I was even think dominator 2.o but that board will probably not float me enough to grow with cuz it would have to be a super long D2 maybe 6'4 or 6'6 to keep up with my volume I'm growing good with? I know this is alot to throw at you..but..you have helped me many times and have been on point already:)

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 3 lety

      two ways to look at it in terms of cutbacks. 1) if you have a lot of speed, you definitely need more space. it does help to have a looser board but at 45 Liters, i'm not sure if there will be too much difference between the 6'1 glazer and the 6'4 Sunday. both are 45L. the only thing better about the sunday in this case is that it is 1.5" narrower. 2) if it is a smaller wave, just get that back foot way back and don't lean. make sure you just put pressure on your heels an get super low. Bend the back knee and straighten out for front leg. Get your back shoulders way over the front knee.
      as far as tail shape, rounded is always easier on heel side in my opinion. So if the cutback is a frontside one where you are on the heels, the glazer and/or Sunday is definitely easier to control than a squash. Just a matter of technique. as i mentioned above, try not to lean into your turn. this is my biggest problem with backside bottom turns. I lean which makes me dig the front rail.

      Also agree quads would be nice too but you can't have them all and them be anything like optimal unfortunately. A real twin and keel should have the side fins further back less cant and less toe than thruster or quad front fins to really work properly. After having the creeper I would set these up as a quad single and where possible on the right sizes that could possibly work as a single and side bites too. They're is a lot to fin positions and fin toe and cant I dont think most people really understand including myself. Shapers have a good handle on this and know it's best to have each position set up a different way to really get the right feel. Keel fins at 9degrees cant up in the thruster spot unsurprisingly too loose and scakatey. Sorry to crap on with details. Love the reviews 👍👍

    Do I go a Sunday 5'9 or 6'0 or Glazer 5'9 for bigger hollower days?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 3 lety +3

      I guess it somewhat depends on the Seaside you have. Is the volume good enough but the attributes falling short on performance or is it both. Meaning, would you need to step up the volume.
      Seasdie 5'7 X 21.62" X 2.5" @ 33.6L
      If the volume is fine on your Seaside and you just need a better performance, here is how I think it breaks down:
      1) step ups should be longer. Often you will see pros go longer but add very little volume. the longer rail line is what you are after. It stabilizes the board and help with drive through turns. I have never seen a pro add thickness to their normal outline to make a step up have more volume. I think it just makes the board feel heavier and less agile.
      2) avoid too much width.
      Having said that. Here is what I think of the boards below.
      Sunday 5'9 X 20" X 2.62" @ 34.66L - has the extra length, is narrower, and same float. Only negative is the fin set up. You can't get a proper thruster set in or quad.
      Sunday 6'0 X 20.25" X 2.75" @ 38.32L - same basic pluses but might be too much volume. Although rails are pinched a bit, it might still end up being too thick. Also the same issue with fins.
      Glazer 5'7 X 20.44" X 2.62" @ 33.7L - not as narrow or long as the Sunday in terms of volume to outline ratio but the tails is pulled in more and the fin setup is better for bigger, steeper waves.
      Glazer 5'8 X 20.62" X 2.69" @ 35.1L - might be getting a tad too wide. since it's LFT, I am guessing the float of this Glazer is about the same as your Seaside. The helium floats a tad better.
      Disclaimer, I have not surfed my Sunday in anything other than a twin. once i test it as a thruster and a 2 +1 (twin plus stabilizer), I'll have a better idea.
      Hope that didn't confuse you too much. :) I too am looing for a better step up. Not sure what to get, it might be something like the Pyzel Shadow, Phantom, Ghost.

      Cuz of the size to volume ratio, if you are looking at mid-lengths, so 6'8 and up. The LFT S&B will have better performance at the same length. But the Sunday will edge out the timberteck versions of the S&B. My opinion. Also, since they don't make a s&b shorter than 6'8, the s&b wins. The quad helps too.

    Ciao Tomye and cheers from Italy. Really interesting the comparison between the Sunday and the Twice Baked, at least for me that I'm looking to find the perfect groveler for weak waves like our Mediterrean swells. I had a Seaside in 5'8 (I'm 6'0 x 156 pound) and was pretty good but lacking a bit of easyness in the very bad days. But definitely let me fall in love with the crazy Helium tech that is a state of art for me. So when it came to find an alternative for the 1-3 ft range, sloppy, messy, longboardish waves I was investigating al lthe option in Helium and, from my understanding, the Twice baked shape could be the best one but i didn't fall in love with Timbertek whith a previous baked potato. So, my question is, does the Sunday could be the go to board for most of the days? Grazie!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 3 lety +2

      so lets start with a few things we know.
      5'8 Seaside = 35.4L and 21.94" - already a big groveler. You want a super groveler possibly a mega groveler, something that gets you in easier and likely can still turn and help you progress.
      Based on that info, you want at least 5 L more at minimum otherwise you won't feel much of a difference since you are surfing smaller waves. By that I mean, you already have a Seaside for ok to better condition at 35 L so might as well go minimum 40 L for smaller crappy days you can't ride or don't want to ride the Seaside.
      The 5'9 Twice Baked comes in at 42L and is 22.375" wide. That's pretty wide. Almost longboard wide. The next Twice Baked is 5'11" at 45L and is 22.625" wide. I think that is longboard wide. haha
      The other option is the Sunday. There isn't one at 40L so you have to go to the next one up which is the 6'4" at 45.11L. That one is 20.75" wide. Above that, is the 6'8" at 48 L and it is 21" wide. As an FYI, I just bought the 6'8 Sunday as a mid-length/funboard. I'll test that one soon.
      Looking at this info, you can go with any of these but knowing what I know now about the Sunday, the single fin with side bites have very little drag. It was night and day for me catching waves on the 6'0. watch the videos of me surfing it as a twin vs 1 +2 vs 2 +1. I don't think I even paddled to catch waves. haha
      If you don't plan to gouge turn and just want to get in easy and surf down the line with the speed of the wave, the 6'4 Sunday seems like a really fun option. that is 10 L more than what you are on now. It is also narrower which will make it easy to handle but still wide enough to be stable. I used to think I couldn't surf anything over a 5'8 but after surfing the Sunday, I realized the board has a lot to do with it. Anyways, not sure how easy it is to test or try someone elses but for me, with all the fin options, the Sunday has been the funnest board to test so far.

      The rails on the 6'0 are not that bad. The board is thicker but the rails drop off really quick and tapers. Relative to a performance board it's definitely fat but relative to other fun boards it's pretty thinned down. A fat rail should not keep you from high lining but it does make it more difficult to set the rail in high speed turns. This particular board is pretty narrow so going toe to heel and setting the rail is actually made easier because of it.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 2 lety

      Hey, sorry for the late response. I was fighting covid around the time you messaged. Anyways, comparing those two specifically, the Chumlee will grovel better. Here's why:
      Although the 5'7 roughly 2 litters less than the 5'9 Sunday, the chumlee is shorter which does put the foam more concentrated around the chest. So in terms of litters, not much difference. However, the chumlee is 1" wider which means it will take less speed to get the board planing. Having said that, since I don't know know much about you, it is hard to say which would be better. If you are 140lbs, then the litters will play the biggest factor. If you are 180lbs, then the width will help more. Having said that, the chumlee has a super wide tail, round. I had the 5'3 chumlee many years ago and hated it. compared to my 5'1 Baked Potato, it didn't surf as well. I think if you are a beginner, the chumlee is more stable. If you are intermediate, I think the Sunday would be more fun overall.
      Hope that helps.

      Yes, the FCS2 single fin will work in most fin boxes whether it is futures, FCS, or generic. The FCS2 single fin fits better in an FCS US Fin box. but having said that, futures and other generic US fin boxes tend to just be a tad deeper below the lock nub so FCS provides soft shims to fill the gap. As you can see from my Sunday, I run the FCS2 fins but the box is Futures. I'm not an expert in single fins so hopefully someone can validate my answer. I think there is a possibility of it not working in some older board, 30 years old that is. but in the Sunday, I don't think you need to worry.

      I'm 140 and can duck dive the 6'0 which is 38L. I have found that 38L is my max. Having said that, I don't dd too deep with this board. if I do the math, my weight to volume is .2714 so at your current weight, 180 x .2714 would put you at 48.86L. I think the 6'4 is like 44L so you should be good. Even at 170, that would put you at 46.14L. that is if you are trying to match my weight to my volume. Having said that, I have seen guys duck dive longboards so some degree of technique does help. I am guessing I lack that technique. haha

I think if you are any taller/bigger person, this statement won't hold true. Having said that, a mid length purist might only consider boards 7' and up true mid lengths. but also, the design. Me, i use the term loosely. When I say mid-length, I more refer it to length. It's not a short board and it's not a long board, so it's a mid. For my style of surfing which is shortboarding with as much performance I can I have, it would be the seaside. So from my perspective, it would be the 5'3 Seaside up against the shortest Sunday which is 5'6. The seaside in this case is just better and easier. The Sunday gets a tad narrow this short and the rails are way too pinched. Of my 3 Sunday's my 6'0 is my favorite but then because of the length and liters, I lose a bit of performance.
      If you gave me a longer San O type wave, I would pick the Sunday. But for my beach break, the Seaside.

    how do you calculate your recommended liters thomye ?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Před 2 lety +1

      I have been surfing so long that I sort of know how. but the reality is, it all depends on how you want to surf. if you are a beginner, more is better and as you become intermediate, you want to do more maneuvers. at that point, less becomes easier but the issue is, less too soon, hurts your surfing. Think about it this way, is it better to surf 2 decent waves a session and feel like you got some decent maneuvers off, or is it better to catch 10 waves, regardless of how you surfed it.
      In my opinion , more waves is more opportunity. So, when I calculate litters, I think about what the board is intended for, and then ask myself how many waves I want to catch.
      Quick story. I always surfed bigger boards as a youngster. One day, I swapped with a buddy that surfed a narrower, smaller, performance board. He let me use his board and it felt like I surfed it 2x better. but reality, probably only felt like it and not true. I probably looked like an idiot. I ended up, based on that feeling, buying narrower, smaller boards from that point. in the end, it messed up my surfing. I took 10 huge steps back and due to muscle memory, I have been struggling to this day.
      Bottom line, if you are a beginner or intermediate, surf bigger board. it will be better later on.
      I'm a very light advanced surfer but I surf 3litters above my recommended litters. that seems to be my sweet spot. I should be on a 24 to 25 litter board but 27 to 29 is what I surf most. mostly because I like the outline and board shape. always use what you are surfing now as a reference.

      @@RBNK157 this is a good chart to use. but you have to factor in your skill level as well as your wave type. So for me, I think I am somewhere between advanced and adv/inter as far as skill goes. But, my break is more often soft so rather than make things more difficult for myself, I move myself towards the right on the chart. You also have to consider not only the shape and power of the wave, but the size.
      www.firewiresurfboards.com/pages/surfboard-volume-calculator
      What I have found recently helpful is that whatever size Noel Salas surfs and likes, I like the next size up (bigger). He is bigger than me and 1" taller. But consistently, whatever size he settles on for a board, I have found I like the next one bigger. I'm certain if I surfed lowers, that would be different but at Bolsa, it has made my guess work much easier.
      Lastly something that I think the industry recommends incorrectly is fin size. They make you factor in your weight but in my opinion, your weight is the smallest factor to consider. I think wave size and power is more important. A better way to put that is how fast your board will move. Bigger waves = more speed, with speed you want smaller fins. Because, the speed makes your board tighter. Less speed, you want bigger fins so you can generate your own speed by tic tacking.
      Anyways, too much to consider at times. Over time though, you start to narrow your preference.

      if we are compared liters only, since the sunday is 38 and S&B is 40 making them really similar, I would say I love the sunday more because it is 8" shorter. Making it perform better and easier to surf in more conditions. But if you factor the length of the board, it changes the way you want to surf it. So, if I bought a 6'8 Sunday and compared it to my 6'8 S&B, I would probably pick the S&B because then, the S&B would be the easier to surf since it is 8 Liters less.
      since they are different, if you told me I could only have one board, I would pick the 6'0 Sunday. I just tried it with a 7" single fin and it was super fun and felt super, harder to surf but fun.

    It’s looks way too big for you and personally it doesn’t look suited for twin setup. Great review!🤟🏼

      yeah, it definitely is above my liter range and size. I think the 5'6 would be a nice permanent fit. It would be interesting to compare it to my 5'6 lineup: El Tomo fish, Neckbeard2, and my Modern2. Battle of the 5'6". I wish firewire still did demo days or a demo locker of some sort. Like Amazon lockers. You pay, got pick it up near the beach surf it and then put it back. :) that would be interesting.

      haha, yeah. The HK is borrowed. I have a 5'6 and it works better but you are probably right, 5'5 would be ideal.

    I have to say if you want deals from firewire then complaining about the high price on your review video isnt super helpful just in my opinion

      but now that I think about it, I'm not sure I would have ever said, they are "too" expensive. I think I say they are expensive and I can't afford to keep buying them. Cuz I truly believe they are a better value than a $600 poly. They are stronger, they don't pressure, and they last longer. Which is why I started buying them 10 years ago and haven't really bought anything since. Compare that to my spineteck neckbeard 2. same price but that board is dented up like a golf ball. which makes me more sick to my stomach. I can't even sell it unless I'm prepared to lose a crap ton of money on it. but you make a solid point. I need to be careful how I come off. :) thanks bro
