This storyline is what made the Xfiles series so popular and the syndicate is similar to the worlds elites in general. The movie is also worth watching and I highly recommend that movie.

LOL it is a terrible show, badly written and meandering around without knowing where to go. The show had such issues that there is even a thing called "X files effect". If you have no plan where to go, make everything more and more and more convoluted, retarded, complicated instead of resolving anything. The show went on 3 seaons too long and lacked any understanding of its own story. Compare X files to Babylon 5, the best sci fi ever made, which introduced ALL modern storytelling tools of high quality TV. X files is nowhere near the level of B5 in terms of story, plot, characters and how it was written.
People knew something is comming. The Cold War was over but the NATO was still there and the USA started to move on the globe. And the people were: _Oh shit, it was never about the Russians isn't it?_ The tech started to grow big enough the people knew the digital ID can be a thing just like cameras can be everywhere. People were sensitive to the dark things. Then the 2000's came and the internet was here and suddenly the entertainment was everywhere. And then... the CIA and the Mosad did it... and the people knew this was the thing we waited in the 90's... and we are here, there is more freedom and democracy in the world today than it ever was, and freedom and democracy soon will be all over the world falling from the sky. This is a different time than the 90's. We know now what we feared in the 90's.
Cigarette Man was much more effective as a powerful villain in the beginning, when he was the mysterious guy in the background pulling the strings but not saying anything. The more they involved him with lines and revealed about him, the less scary he became. In the end, he was just a regular villain who smoked.
What made it worse is that he was basically nothing but the Syndicate's sword and shield. He never really took any of the big decisions, he just carried out what the group had decided. Especially him being roasted to his core by the Well Manicured Man ruined his entire character. The Well Manicured Man and even the Well Fed Man were a lot more interesting and nuanced. They weren't petty like CSM who had personal vendettas with every character, they operated from the shadows and intervened when necessary.

The thing I dislike most about this show is how the overarching plot about colonization really went nowhere. Watching the show from the start, knowing where it ends up, shows how convoluted and uncoordinated it was. It was built up to be this huge thing, and over the course of the series it fell flat. And when the revival came, it was barely mentioned, since 2012 came and went with no problem. And now the series is dead. Wonderful show, of course, but it could have been so much better if there was actual planning put into the overall arch of the story.
That's when it flaws, especially when you got a character from Law and Order appearing once. Good luck to persuade Dick Wolf to put an alien invasion in his sagaverse ! I always thought all of this conspiracy went really too far, that the authors couldn't fit a satisfying point. You mean that a race of aliens that could travel everywhere in the universe, create life, shapeshift... Could not survive an ice age, stand some centuries in orbit (waiting for the planet to warm back a bit), or just find another planet to live ? And yes, the 2012 deadline could not hold on, and the uno reverse card they served was just a way to say "We don't know what to do"... What I would have liked to see in a revival is the disclosure, the complete revelation, that would have rocked for sure !
The colonisation was stopped by the Alien Rebels in One Son. Then the aliens tried to implement their Supersoldiers agenda and the date for colonisation was set of December 2012. I believe, and it is implied in the show, that the whole thing was eventually stopped by the alien rebels in alliance with the Russians. When Krychek and Marita Covarubias pushed CSM down the stairs they did it because CSM wanted to revive the project. Both Krychek and Covarubias were Russian agents, ultimately. However, I do Agree that the revival shpuld have wrapped up the whole arc. P.S. For me it was easy to follow the arc and it all makes sense.
There was supposed to be a movie released shortly after the show ended that would've wrapped up the mytharc but a lawsuit took years to resolve. By the time the lawsuit was resolved and the movie could be made it had been so long they weren't sure people would remember enough of the show for it to work. So, they opted for a Monster of the Week movie in 2008 hoping to rekindle interest with the possiblity of a mytharc movie in theaters by 2012. Unfortunately, the 2008 movie didn't perform as well as was hoped.

While they waited, they had an epic debate, during which Jeremiah shapeshifted into people the CSM had been close to and later killed. In the end, the alien tells CSM that he's dying of lung cancer, and CSM trades setting him free for Jeremiah using his powers to cure the cancer.

Unfortunately the show fell victim to the same thing that dooms most shows: it was on too long. Season 7 should've been the end. Mulder found out what happened to Samantha, the Syndicate was wiped out, the resistance to the aliens was at its height. The writers should've written a fitting ending to the whole thing then.
As a huge Xfiles fan from the start when I was a kid... And a BIG fan of Gillian til this day... I mean I had Xfiles comics, soundtracks, VHS, taped off the TV, trading cards, a deck from the card game, original novels, short books based on the TV show... Everything you could get in the 90s... Why wasn’t Samantha ever returned to the Mulder family? Wouldn’t it be easier for CGB to return her to the Mulders so Fox Mulder wouldn’t grow up thinking the whole abduction is his fault and become an FBI agent in search of the truth. Then maybe CGB could convince Mulder (Fox) that what he’s seeing during secret abductions of his sister are nothing but dreams. I have t watched the whole show yet (in the process) but I was thinking that of the aliens want to make a deal, that means they aren’t as all powerful as they seem. If they were, why bother dealing with the humans at all? It’s too bad the syndicate as far as I can tell wasn’t looking for a way to resist them. In episode 2 of season 1 you see the USAF flying aircraft reverse engineered from alien technology. The purpose I could guess would be too give us a means to compete with their craft but the statements I hear seem to contradict the attempts at building a means to effectively fight back.
The aliens wanted to start the invasion in 2012 but one of their aircraft crashed in the desert in the 40's so they wanted to start the invasion in the 50's instead, the humans realised what happened and the americans made a pact with the russians, they told the aliens they will nuke the whole planet and nobody can have it. The aliens put the invasion date to 2012 again and made a pact with the humans. The pact: The Syndicate will survive as hybrids and the rest of the mankind will die. But the Syndicate wanted to develop a vaccine against the alien virus so they did tried to do something against it.
This was the height, the zenith. I was literally on the edge of my seat. Everything had built to this. What was going to happen next!? Answer: a slow fizzling out over the next three years. What? Yes! ugh. The faceless alien rebels was intriguing, but ultimately went nowhere. I guess? It's hard to tell what happened next. The rebels took Cassandra. So, what happened to her? The black oil aliens didn't invade. What happened to them? I guess everyone has that one awesome TV show that rudely drops them back into reality: that it's just a TV show, meant to advertise toothpaste and peanut butter. For many it was the Game of Thrones. But by the time that came around, the X-Files had already ruined me. And there was Lost. All three of those shows had this amazing period of building up to some unbelievable ending which, ultimately, they didn't show. Maybe they couldn't show it. The Two Fathers-One Son two parter was the ending of the X-Files, the climax. It couldn't go any further. It couldn't deliver what it promised.
If you miss this 5 minutes explanation you will lost the plot like I did. :) I had to wait for the internet to know what the fuck is actually the main plot in The X-Files.
I stopped watching after the 1998 film Fight the Future. The series took a sharp downturn in quality after that. But the first five seasons were quality television, led by good actors and good ideas. Elegant simplicity, compared to all the big-budget stink bombs of the past quarter century.

So I've never watched the X-files, but I know generally about the show. I finally decided to watch a clip of "the smoking man" and I choose this one. I should have known from the video title, but the first 3 seconds basically wraps up the story lol. As the Big Lebowski cop says, "Guess we can close the file on that one!"
Frankly I liked the show more when it had little capsule episodes, rather than uncover some huge alien conspiracy spanning so many episodes with a contrived and unsatisfying resolution.

However, I do Agree that the revival shpuld have wrapped up the whole arc.
P.S. For me it was easy to follow the arc and it all makes sense.
There was supposed to be a movie released shortly after the show ended that would've wrapped up the mytharc but a lawsuit took years to resolve. By the time the lawsuit was resolved and the movie could be made it had been so long they weren't sure people would remember enough of the show for it to work. So, they opted for a Monster of the Week movie in 2008 hoping to rekindle interest with the possiblity of a mytharc movie in theaters by 2012. Unfortunately, the 2008 movie didn't perform as well as was hoped.

Unfortunately the show fell victim to the same thing that dooms most shows: it was on too long. Season 7 should've been the end. Mulder found out what happened to Samantha, the Syndicate was wiped out, the resistance to the aliens was at its height. The writers should've written a fitting ending to the whole thing then.
As a huge Xfiles fan from the start when I was a kid... And a BIG fan of Gillian til this day... I mean I had Xfiles comics, soundtracks, VHS, taped off the TV, trading cards, a deck from the card game, original novels, short books based on the TV show... Everything you could get in the 90s... I agree with you SO MUCH... That should have been the logical end. And as much as I like the second film as a monster of the week thing... It makes no sense.

Why wasn’t Samantha ever returned to the Mulder family? Wouldn’t it be easier for CGB to return her to the Mulders so Fox Mulder wouldn’t grow up thinking the whole abduction is his fault and become an FBI agent in search of the truth. Then maybe CGB could convince Mulder (Fox) that what he’s seeing during secret abductions of his sister are nothing but dreams.
Not that I’m in the side of CGB here (I’m not) and I know people would say “If that happens, there wouldn’t be xfiles” but I just think that it’s an important component to the story that CGB never returned Samantha to the Mulders.
She would have found out that her father was involved in cooperation with alien narcissists who were trying to cause state department officials to agree on human - alien hybridization programs. I have t watched the whole show yet (in the process) but I was thinking that of the aliens want to make a deal, that means they aren’t as all powerful as they seem. If they were, why bother dealing with the humans at all?
It’s too bad the syndicate as far as I can tell wasn’t looking for a way to resist them. In episode 2 of season 1 you see the USAF flying aircraft reverse engineered from alien technology. The purpose I could guess would be too give us a means to compete with their craft but the statements I hear seem to contradict the attempts at building a means to effectively fight back.
The aliens wanted to start the invasion in 2012 but one of their aircraft crashed in the desert in the 40's so they wanted to start the invasion in the 50's instead, the humans realised what happened and the americans made a pact with the russians, they told the aliens they will nuke the whole planet and nobody can have it.
The aliens put the invasion date to 2012 again and made a pact with the humans. The pact: The Syndicate will survive as hybrids and the rest of the mankind will die. But the Syndicate wanted to develop a vaccine against the alien virus so they did tried to do something against it.
This was the height, the zenith. I was literally on the edge of my seat. Everything had built to this. What was going to happen next!? Answer: a slow fizzling out over the next three years. What? Yes! ugh. The faceless alien rebels was intriguing, but ultimately went nowhere. I guess? It's hard to tell what happened next. The rebels took Cassandra. So, what happened to her? The black oil aliens didn't invade. What happened to them?
I guess everyone has that one awesome TV show that rudely drops them back into reality: that it's just a TV show, meant to advertise toothpaste and peanut butter. For many it was the Game of Thrones. But by the time that came around, the X-Files had already ruined me. And there was Lost. All three of those shows had this amazing period of building up to some unbelievable ending which, ultimately, they didn't show. Maybe they couldn't show it.
The Two Fathers-One Son two parter was the ending of the X-Files, the climax. It couldn't go any further. It couldn't deliver what it promised.
This is well-written, and accurate. After X-Files and Lost, I’ll never again become invested in a show with such a convoluted mythology.

I stopped watching after the 1998 film Fight the Future. The series took a sharp downturn in quality after that. But the first five seasons were quality television, led by good actors and good ideas. Elegant simplicity, compared to all the big-budget stink bombs of the past quarter century.

So I've never watched the X-files, but I know generally about the show. I finally decided to watch a clip of "the smoking man" and I choose this one. I should have known from the video title, but the first 3 seconds basically wraps up the story lol. As the Big Lebowski cop says, "Guess we can close the file on that one!"
I’ve watched the x files a lot - honestly they should have stopped at Season 5/6. The show pretty much finished with the end of the syndicate.
