I really like how for the duration of the piece, he's very clearly (and masterfully) paying homage to Prokofiev but restraining himself, and then in the 4th movement he cannot take it anymore and the entire movement is just a recreation of Prokofiev's 5th. In a good way; there's few better ways to express admiration than an excellent yet still unique imitation.

This music amazes me. How come no one ever performs these compositions? Can't say the orchestra repertoire is dying when there's hidden gems like this.

Lenny Bernstein would easily get a KICK out of conducting this!

This symphony is just a perfect example of how a common Soviet citizen would interpret anything by AKB48.

This is a very attractive and creative homage to his Soviet idols. This is an interesting piece but I prefer his later stuff. He certainly was a musical guy.

A heroic struggle of a piece! Around 20 minutes in, it sounds like Prokofiev wins the fight.

Enemy Stalin used censorship! It's a critical hit! Prokofiev fainted! What will Akutagawa do?!

This is a good example of an exercise in stylistic writing but not an original composition.

This is a good example of an exercise in writing respectless nonsense! This symphonie is written in deep devotion to Prokofjew. Please have a look in the two scores. And hear the other original compositions of the great Akutagawa, who never was a simple epigone. And learn about the many composers who wrote "a la manier de.."

@@michaelfischer5800 I would agree with your first comment, the chorale is mesmerizing. Altough i am, by no means, very knowledgeable of his full work, by the various pieces i already listened, i feel Akutagawa was not able to break free from a certain architectural composition that limits is overall work, besides the wonderful adagios that he always creates.
I am specially talking about his early orchestral works.
