Please realize that this is all Angelina. The notes and sheets you see her referring are all hers. The musicians you see affectionately refer to her as “The Boss”. Per her Mother Angelina chooses her own music. At age five and six she took classes in music theory learning to deconstruct songs and rearranging the music the way she wanted. She was enrolled in an after school program at her school, taking music, piano, violin and flute. She did not have voice lessons and by eight the school stated they had nothing else they could teach her. It is known that her work ethic was and is incredible. Practices six hours per day, six days per week. Her Mother tried to slow her down but to no avail. She wanted more. She is recorded singing at eighteen months of age. At two going on three she is seen scrolling through CZcams looking for Jazz artists to listen to at three she tells her Mother she wants to sing on that Simon show. At five she tells her Mother she wants to sing at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. At six she states she wants to be a superstar.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. You also notice that her own handwritten notes are on the music stand in front of her as she sings. For more insight into how Angelina works, here is a rehearsal video with some of the members of the same band at the same age (9 yrs old) - You will see that she is aware of what each musician is doing and gives them some instructions. There are English subtitles as the spoken language is Norwegian: czcams.com/video/SAkZDAXJA4E/video.html

This points out another thing Elish Ann - not only is Angelina very present and referring to the lyrics or notes while she sings, she is doing it in ENGLISH, her third or FOURTH language!
When I was just learning to read at five or six (here in the USA), Angelina was doing the same, but she had a much more advanced English vocabulary than I did (the lyrics were more advanced than anything I was reading at the time).
Beyond Angelina’s musical excellence, I think she is truly intellectually gifted.

Yes, Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956. She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
Things I found particularly worthy of note in this video are
    (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
    (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
    (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
    (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
    (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
    (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand
    (g) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

According to Angelina, she taught herself how to sing starting at around age 2 to 3, focusing on with jazz. Angelina, a child prodigy, arranged this performance, drawing from the original artist, Screamin' Jay Hawkins. In the beginning of the video, she's seen scribbling down her lyrics (not the notes, just the lyrics). During the performance, you can see her following the lyrics she wrote at the beginning. Throughout her career, Angelina is known for making her own arrangement. This was first seen during her performances on Norway's Got Talent, which she auditioned for at 7, and went on to win at 8 years old. She's also known making single takes. In many of these you can see her reading from the lyrics on her phone while singing. Check out her performance of Rihanna's "Stay" at age 12. The guitarist, Ivan Mendez, said that they just chilled at her house during the day, only to knock out the songs in one take that evening. Angelina explains of herself that when she sings, she's transported to a world of her own. A beautiful place where the music stretches out before her, as she closes her eyes.
Your reaction and analysis were great to watch and learn from, and I followed you already.
Only one comment to make, however. Please play the entire piece, and don't jump ahead or skip over parts of her performance. Your analysis and pauses are very robust on their own, and more than satisfy the Fair Use Acception to the Copyright Law.
Since you've reacted to this song, check out Cici Dover (with English CC) and the Fairy Voice Mother, both vocal coaches as you are. Each of you mades different observations your analysis. The Fairy Voice Mother zeroed in on Angelina's use of her physiology to produce the sounds she employs while Cici examines Angelina's phrasing.

i always find it ok when someone pauses (even quite often) to give commentaries and then skips BACK a bit. it's also ok when the picture (ratio, resolution, brightness, sharpness, transparency, there are lots of options) is distorted or overlayed to avoid copyright problems. i have seen it hundreds of times and don't need to see(!) it again. but skipping large parts (including the long notes and runs in one or a few breaths) completely without commenting about why, or what happened during these parts is (at least to me) quite annoying, no matter how insightful and interesting (better than by most other reactors) other commentaries were for those parts in the first half that were not skipped completely.
edit/ps : to me, the cuts and the shortening were almost worse than what agt and similar shows do to get it under two minutes to enable more time for commercials.

Angelia is self taught. She does the arrangements and very professionally works with the musicians to ensure they support her desired outcome. I not sure if you know but quite often she has the lyrics on her phone and rarely does more than one or two takes. She obviously has an amazing ear for her craft. She is often referred to as a the with a 1000 voices. While she can sound like so many different singers, she diffidently has her own unique sound, no matter what genre music she try’s out. She did an amazing job so singing in Japanese, during a concert in Japan, several years ago. I hope you will continue reacting to her music, she has well over 100 to choose from. I suggest her music videos for Suspicious Minds and I Who Have Nothing. AJ was developing her sound at 6-7 when she actually won Norway's Got Talent, If you follow her sound as she grows year by year you can see how she hones the unique AJ sound. I know she had piano lessons and guitar lessons and also plays the flute and violin. When it comes to singing, I don't know. I get the impression she taught herself a lot by just listening to others. I coined the phrase that she has a phonographical memory. If you watch her perform Summertime in the final of Norway got Talent, you can hear her whisper a little sentence Ella spoke in her duet with Louis, as if the song was on a tape running in her head.
I think a lot of this performance really comes from within and from her core. In the beginning the video you see her giving a sheet to the director: those are some last minute changes to the arrangement she made earlier. So she is reading her own arrangement. She is inspired by Screamin' Jay Hawkins for this song, the original artist who is on the candle just before she starts singing. It is really such an amazing performance.
You might enjoy listening to her covering or better reinventing 'Suspicious Minds'. It is a recent song with a beautiful video production: czcams.com/video/RTbKhkceR00/video.html Also 'My Funny Valentine' she released this year is really a gem: czcams.com/video/ETGLbsGDAI0/video.html

She was 10 when it was recorded it and even though you don't get to see her singing, the level of performance and production is extraordinary, even for Angelina. She was the first to record this song, so it is not a cover, even though someone else wrote it. Which makes her interpretation and delivery of the lyrics even more bewildering. Truly bewildering. Easiest way to understand how she could do this at 9 is to witness what she did at 7 and 8 on _Norway's Got Talent_ [Norske Talenter]. Not that she sang anything like this on that show, but hearing her voice back then will dispel any skepticism you might have about whether you're really hearing her true voice in this "produced" track. (In particular, you were marveling at how low she went here at 9. She actually went lower in one of her NGT performances - and it was a cappella.) You *need* to react to all 4 of her performances on that show. I have a playlist (with an obvious name) on my channel that might help you to choose which exact videos you want to use for that, but it will only be useful if you read the full description of the playlist.

I never tire of this. The lung power in covering the ending.... Her diction. No doubt about the words.... Listen to the recording (not the live performance) of "Screaming" Jay Hawkins "I Put a Spell On You." She built her arrangement on that, actually introducing more musicality to the style. She has listened to the old jazz since she was tiny. I've heard they just let her play with her "instrument," rather than unduly mold it toward a particular style. She has never performed this song in this exact way again. The video you played felt broken/truncated. 💜

Loved that shocked face at the beginning. She was really only barely 9, at 9 yrs and 2 mos old. The timing, dynamics, pitch, phrasing and breath control is more than exceptional. Angelina stepped up her game at 10 years old with over a dozen spectacular performances. IMO, the best video of Angelina on stage with a great orchestra is her arrangement and delivery of "FEELING GOOD": czcams.com/video/p8kAL-sGJx8/video.html
I've listened to many of the greats perform this song through the years but this is a masterpiece by a 10 yo. Her stage presence, arrangement and delivery....WOW. Another at 10 that blew me away and is still in my top 5 AJ songs is a song she demoed for at 10 but was never released. The recording was discovered two years after the recording and uploaded to YT anonymously. The original artist actually did go on to perform the song himself but one month AFTER Angelina's was uploaded, so in essence, he covered his own song, LOL. Here is the link to "I'M STILL HOLDING OUT FOR YOU": czcams.com/video/p8kAL-sGJx8/video.html Unfortunately it is only an audio track with a really good fan made video that says "Leaked" but it's okay to view since the original writer gave permission.

Great reaction and breakdown! She did a demo when she was 10 and it was leaked when she was 12, called, "I'm Still Holding Out For You". Regrettably it's fan made video, so you don't see her singing, but coming from a 10 year old is in sane. She re-arranges all her songs and she handed the Producer some last minute changes. One of the Judges on NGT said he been to the rehearsal for her song, "Bang Bang" and he saw her giving the Base player instructions and new at that time, she is the real deal. She been listening to Jazz since she was 3 and singing since 1-1/2 years old. When she entered Music Academy at 4, she was technically already ahead of the teachers. They mainly taught her how to protect her voice and Theory, God Bless!

Another aspect of Angelina is that she grew up in a household where her grandmother, Mery Zamani, played Jazz records as part of daily home life. Angelina was exposed to that music since birth. Angelina actually first sang a very brief snippet of I Will Always Love You at age 1 1/2, which is included in this news report from Norwegian TV (English Subtitles): czcams.com/video/5A_N1i00gFs/video.html - as an additional note: Angelina's grandmother was a child prodigy herself in art and poetry and became a well-respected Iranian artist. Her grandmother recognized Angelina's abilities very early and the two could relate to each other and have an inseparable bond.

Had you watched the whole set of 4 vignettes you would have seen her bare feet, her writing on the lyric sheet making a last minute change to the piece. She did this frequently enough that it was about this time that the band started to affectionately call her 'The Boss'. Angelina often arranged the music to be in-sync with how she felt that day.
Let there be no mistake Angelina determines what Angelina sings. She has been given free rein in deciding how to best sing a song. I don't know if she has had a vocal coach because I can't imagine any vocal coach teaching her to sing like that. Angelina's mom has said, 'this will go as far as Angelina wants it to go. If she wakes up tomorrow and says, "I'm done" then you will never see us again.' I do know that Angelina was cautioned about singing this way and never did it this way again. She kept singing the song, but without the big growls and yells. In fact she sang this as an encore at a concert in South Korea when opening for Norah Jones. Here is that version.

Great analysis. Regarding the lead sheet. She's reading the lyrics that she either altered and composed herself. Imagine a little 9 year old Norwegian girl, composing, reading, and singing in her SECOND language. She has been altering lyrics of some songs, per her mother's request, to be more age appropriate. Most notable, her Amy Winehouse covers of 'Back to Black' and 'Rehab'. Also, regarding using lyric sheets, Angelina has an additional ability to sing off a lyric sheet or monitor without sounding like she's RECITING. Great examples of this were in 'Back to Black' rehearsing with a live string session. In this one, she rewrote the lyrics from either the evening before, or actually on the way to the rehearsal. She nailed it. The most impressive of her reading & singing lyrics were in her covers of Whitney Houston's 'I Have Nothing', Lana Del Rey's 'Born to Die' and Adele's 'A Million Years Ago'. It's just astounding how she developed this talent to convincingly tell a story that's sounds so sincere, while reading the lyrics from a sheet or monitor. In the last cover, as soon as the piece is over, she turns to the camera, smiles and gleefully waves and says 'Goodbye'......... She's such a pro to be so convincing, then be able to turn back into a normal young girl after.

Or I'd Rather Go Blind, or It's A Man's World in concert, both at age 12? By the way, she has performed 'Spell' in concert many times and always holds back on the growls, so she knows it's damaging to her. I suspect there's a 'story' behind this recording, why she made it and why she pushed her limits, but so far we don't know what it might be.

This includes her earliest studio work. I think you can credit her early training to two factors: First, her Grandmother (Mery Zamani) who introduced her to jazz and has been her constant mentor for her whole life. Second, to the Norwegian education system that provides extensive opportunities for its youngest students to develop their natural talents.
Here are some recommendations that will show more of the spectrum of her vocal range when she was still quite young (as if 16 is old):

Pretty sure she didn’t have a vocal coach. Repost of Bill Weekley: At age four, she enrolled in an after school program taking music lessons. Piano, violin and flute. No voice lessons. At five, she was taking music theory learning to deconstruct songs and arranging them to her liking. She may now have a voice coach after signing with Republic Records, but no one knows for sure. She is first recorded singing at eighteen months of age. At two, going on three, she is scrolling through CZcams looking for Jazz artists to listen to. At three, she tells her Mother she wants to sing on that Simon show. At five, she try’s to audition for Norway’s Got Talent but is told she is too young and must be seven. She tells her Mother she wants to sing at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. At six, she enters the recording booth for the first time and records four songs: “Rolling In The Deep”, “Hurt”, “Sky Fall”, and most notably, “I, Who Have Nothing”. Which is well worth reacting to. At seven, she auditions for Norway’s Got Talent singing Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”. Turning eight, she wins Norway’s Got Talent. Point of interest: At eight, she sings at the Nobel Peace Prize. At thirteen, ten years after telling her Mother she wanted to sing for Simon, she does.

At age 12 There are two songs of note here:
‘Shield’ which is one of here originals - czcams.com/video/lQtUbVKb0vs/video.html
She was invited to perform at Quincy Jones’ 85th birthday in London she sang what is sort of her anthem (she has sung throughout the years many times). This is the rehearsal for the show but it is excellent, it is number two on my playlist. - czcams.com/video/OMkwoqUNNkE/video.html
At Age 13 she performed two songs on America’s Got Talent - and one other song of note -
‘I Have Nothing’ is a tribute to Whitney Houston - czcams.com/video/eTcvvO6B3Io/video.html
On AGT ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ for which she got the Golden Buzzer - czcams.com/video/qF0JV28vgLw/video.html
On AGT ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’ in the finals - czcams.com/video/4XOMskgN8w4/video.html - but she didn’t win. A lot of people are upset about that, but I think it’s the best thing that happened for her.
At Age 16 she has two new covers.
The newest and the best is an Elvis cover ‘Suspicious Minds’ - czcams.com/video/RTbKhkceR00/video.html
She has released a new version of I Have Nothing - czcams.com/video/iX0g99jN26U/video.html - which is probably the best song she has done so far.
The other is ‘My Funny Valentine - czcams.com/video/bWiLOnHJYxg/video.html
She has done several Adel covers and one other song of note - ‘Million Miles’ - czcams.com/video/3KxvwuZ7oEM/video.html - this is an original that she wrote in honor of her grandfather after he passed away. It is also the first song released under her contract with Republic Records.
Rusty Shackelford has a CZcams playlist that includes all of her videos, including TikTok and Instagram. I have a playlist of currently 106 of her videos that has received over 67,000 views (Angelina Jordan Playlist by Terry M.)

I am about to go check out your channel, but if you haven't already, you should check out Angelina's cover of How Great Thou Art to really see her lower register in her younger years.

You said she was a woman she's only 16 years old she's still a shy kid but being a prodigy you need to watch her tapes from concerts she just did in Norway and a new performance she did but I have nothing from Whitney Houston You will be stunned

Angelina has only done this version of this song this one time for this recording. For her to have vocal damage for doing some of the stuff she did in this video she would have had to do it on a regular basis. A lot of reactors, including voice coaches seem to miss that this character piece that SHE designed. She is doing it with purpose.

Angelina Jordan Astar was born with a tiny bit bigger larynx than. usual. That is why she sings in the lower ranges. Also she is gifted with high IQ. This is a 29 year old mind in the body of a 9 yo.

The sheet of paper Angelina is referring to is the one where she wrote the lyrics with her own style in the beginning of the video you see her writing and then the band leader reading them and laughing.

brogen The notes were her alterations that she wanted as last minute changes to her original arrangement. The reason the band director was chuckling was because her so taken with how polite and precious she was in titling those changes as "wishes".

To answer your question of what you could possibly listen to after this performance, the answer is I'm still holding out for you, the leaked version, performed when she was 10 years old. :-) you're welcome :-)
