    I’m so glad you posted this! We put in new insulation and the lack of humidity had been a real pain this winter! I did not know you could install something through the duct work so I will definitely look into that. My very long hair has become the house dust mop collecting every fleck of lint there is in the air! 🤣 I had no idea what was causing it so thanks so much for discussing this.

    Great information. We do a lot of canning in the winter in addition to showering with the door open. We have a steamer and a small humidifier. The wood adds a little humidity also while its further drying before burning. Every little bit helps for certain. Thanks for all the good tips.

    Great info! One thing I'd like to add is to consider power fluctuation in your area. Here in Maine, it is not uncommon to experience a quick power interruption which can shut off appliances that use a button to turn them on. I have 2 units that will shut off and one dumb one with an old fashioned rocker switch that comes back on when the power comes back. I can't tell you how many times I've discovered that 2 of my humidifiers weren't running from a glitch that occurred overnight.

    Awesome video Eric. We have been battling with low humidity in our home recently and have been looking for a solution. The humidifier shown in the video, would this be too big for a 1000 sq ft home? All of the large room ones we have tried just don't seem to cut it however the next size up generally is greater than 2000 sq ft.

    How long does humidity in a room last? I've bought a small humidifier, but it doesn't have a self ajustable feature. Can't I put it on for an hour and it'll be good for the night or will I have to leave it on (as I suspect I will anyway). I want it for my bedroom while I sleep because my bedroom is newly made and is bone dry causing me some serious sleep problems. I like the window open a little at night too and I'm wondering what effect that'll have particularly in the winter.

    Have problems on my double pane thermo windows that are regular without low E. Can these windows be contributing to condensation on the windows.? I run a dehumidifier, have an air exchanger but still get condensation on the windows. Wondering if I should just upgrade the thermo glass In my windows to energy efficient ones.?

  • @SilverHeist
    @SilverHeist Před 5 lety +3

    We are battling to lower our relative humidity. We are around 42%. We run a dehumidifier in basement. We are either going to raise temperature of indoor air or bring in more dry outdoor air. But then we need to heat that fresh air. We do have daily condensation on windows. Worse when it is colder outside.

    • @PatrickWagz
      @PatrickWagz Před 5 lety +1

      What type of heating system and fuel do you use? Baseboard/radiator/forced hot air?
      I have heard that propane/natural gas is a "wet" type of heat.
      Is that what you have?

    • @SilverHeist
      @SilverHeist Před 5 lety +3

      It is a two year old house. We burn wood with an outside air intake direct to Woodstove. Propane boiler baseboard for backup. We also have an air exchanger ventilation. 10 minutes an hour. Am trying 20 minutes. Plus it is on whenever bathroom in use. Very tight house.
      Basement dehumidifier setting we are moving from 50% to 45% and now 40%.

    • @PatrickWagz
      @PatrickWagz Před 5 lety +2

      @@SilverHeist Hmm, you would think the woodstove would have no problem keeping the humidity low. We run a woodstove as primary heat source and actually keep a kettle of water on top of it to add moisture to the air. We burn about 6 hours a day and add about 4-5 quarts water for that amount of burn. Keeps RH around 35% I imagine without the kettle of water, we would be around 25-30%

      Silver Heist - you might have a leak in your vapour barrier system, your window/door jambs were not sealed properly to your vapour barrier, attic hatches aren’t sealed. A lot of variables....

    • @pettahify
      @pettahify Před 2 lety +2

      42% is not high humidity. People need at least 40% to feel good. If you have condensation on your windows, it's the windows that are the fault point, not the humidity in your house.

    Forget winter humidity. Here in Vegas, it's dry ALL THE TIME! My skin is breaking first week I moved here. All houses here should have humidity enhancement. But what if my fan blower does not run for days or even weeks? Would that be a problem? There are times in the year when I get optimal temperature for weeks and my a/c (or heater) don't need to turn on. Will these systems cause a leak in my ceiling?

  • @dylanowens3173

    You can make your own humidifier that does not use electricity and easy clean get rid of mold unlike store bought humidifiers.
    Get a tall pot and microfiber towel(s) , role it up and stand it up in the pot. The water will wick up the rolled up towel. And you can add a fan if want to push the moister out into room.
    Then you can clean the pot and wash the towel or soak towel in vinegar or bleach killing the mold unlike store bought machines that regularly need the wicks changed and inside scrubbed or you will be putting mold all over your house.

  • @MarkThomas123
    @MarkThomas123 Před 4 lety

    Ah.. Dewpoint is the key. Like you said,, Relative Humidity is always Relative to the Temperature... Not very many people actually understand it.. A Summer afternoon, a light rain on the Blacktop road, and the steam?????/Fog??? /Moisture starts smoking up from the road.. Is it steam? The road is not 212 degrees and boiling the water from liquid to steam... Correct?
    It is temperature variance that causes it.. The fluctuating dewpoint, Relative to temperature and humidity..
    If you need more humidity in your house from running a wood stove, put a drip pan on your wood stove and drip cool water into it.. If you really want to blow the humidity into your house, install a 3" pipe into your wood stove, come out and 90 degrees up.. You will have to rig up a float driven drip system (fairly simple), that will drip cold water from a bucket outside(maybe), into the heated water into the pipe heated from the inside of the stove.. The cold water hitting the hot water will really get the moisture going again.. I had 3 pots on my wood stove.. Filled them up several times a day and still had trouble getting over 35% humidity.. The simple drip system, I was able to use the water much more effectively and seems like the water dripping into the pipe evaporated almost as fast as it dripped into the pipe.. Just some food for thought if you wanted to tinker with it.. I'm sure you will get positive results.. Interesting video.. Cheers.. !! I have to get back to work now... :)
    On another thought.. If I could ever figure that one out, I would be talking about "Cold Brewed Moonshine".. Ha..Ha.. :)
