About Life In Farmland: Our family strives to be as self-sufficient as we can be. We grow a lot of food in the garden, raise or hunt for our meat, cut and use firewood to heat our house in the cold Minnesota winters. We want to know where our food comes from, what goes into it. We strive to live a slower and sustainable lifestyle with family being our first priority. On this channel, you will find a lot of how-tos, shared experiences, recipes, and videos of things we are trying and learning more about. - Jak na to + styl
I’m so glad you posted this! We put in new insulation and the lack of humidity had been a real pain this winter! I did not know you could install something through the duct work so I will definitely look into that. My very long hair has become the house dust mop collecting every fleck of lint there is in the air! 🤣 I had no idea what was causing it so thanks so much for discussing this.
Great information Eric! Thanks!
good day to you Eric & Family !! thanks for sharing your adventures and update on & off the farm 🏡🏗️🛠️
Excellent crash course on humidity reasons and control at home as well as a summary of all solutions, thank you!
TY Great timing. I just moved to a new area and started using wood heat. Getting ready to purchase a new guitar and wondered about the humidity. ;)
Great information. We do a lot of canning in the winter in addition to showering with the door open. We have a steamer and a small humidifier. The wood adds a little humidity also while its further drying before burning. Every little bit helps for certain. Thanks for all the good tips.
Eric, I should watch your channel more often, this video was excellent - as I said I've been subscribed to you for a while but obviously am missing out by not visiting frequently enough.
As always my brother, great content videos!!! Thank you.
Great knowledge and advice! Well done, Eric.
Thank you for taking the time to create this video...exactly the info I needed. (NB Canada..also cold in winter)
Didn’t think about windows as an option to control humidity but of course it makes sense. Thank you. ~Heather
Lots of good info Eric. Good luck with the brutal cold temps coming this week.
Thanks Scott!
Thank you for all your knowledge. Stay warm.
Thanks same to you!
Best explanation of relative humidity I have encountered. Thanks so much!
If all else fails saturate a bath towel and hang it on a hanger near the ceiling or in a doorway. That will also help bring up humidity levels.
Love it!
Hi Eric! *Thanks for all the good information.*
It's also right, that it's smarter and cheaper to buy things outside the season. I mostly try that, if possible.
This was very helpful! Thank you so much
This was packed with great information! Great video
Great info buddy - thanks for sharing 👍
WOW!! It's 5:21 Am the out door temp is 31 F the humidity is 88% . My indoor temp is 62 F and humidity 66%. We run the dehumidifier as much as we can afford. It's runs at 600 watts an hr. This makes me think. Thanks man!! God Bless
Mr. Science 🔬
Good stuff!!
Thanks again! Have to do something this year!!
Excellent video full of great info, thanks for sharing and doing the research.
Thanks for watching Ken!
Awesome video just bought a new house and this helps a lot.
I have a warm steam and cold mist humidifier.
Just now I ordered a dehumidifier. Don't really have high humidity but I want better air quality and help my air con and have lower energy cost!! I love learning about this stuff!!
Great informative video!
Great Video did not consider all that. Very informative. Take care all
Very informative video, thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you. You're very thorough. I learned a lot.
Great video well explained, I might just put a bucket of water in my shed so it's takes the monitor of dry thanks for sharing
Thanks Eric
Thank you so much for this information.
Nice video, thanks!
Hello to you Eric and your family.
Thanks!!! Drying out soooon
Informative video thank you!
Liked and subscribed. I guess if people would spend more time over the stove their nose wouldn't be so dry and and looking for help Great clip . I never really thought about leaving my bathroom door open and filling a bucket to pour into the humidifier. Great tip Thanks Eric
very cool video thank you for sharing
Great info! One thing I'd like to add is to consider power fluctuation in your area. Here in Maine, it is not uncommon to experience a quick power interruption which can shut off appliances that use a button to turn them on. I have 2 units that will shut off and one dumb one with an old fashioned rocker switch that comes back on when the power comes back. I can't tell you how many times I've discovered that 2 of my humidifiers weren't running from a glitch that occurred overnight.
Great point!! Thank you for sharing
very good information here! thank you
Great video thanks 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
I’m going to do my own research but off bucks(that means from the start of the video), you sound like you know wtf you talking about! I dig it! Lol
Eric, I use an old copper tea pot on my wood stove. It's great for adding humidity and it also lets me know if I ever "over-fire" the stove, it whistle's at me....
i have found that a large fish tank makes for a super cool humidifier mine produced just a nuff to keep my nose happy and no chapped lips . you can generally get a 55gallon tank off craigslist for around 100$ looks cook and adds sum humidity to the house .
Awesome video Eric. We have been battling with low humidity in our home recently and have been looking for a solution. The humidifier shown in the video, would this be too big for a 1000 sq ft home? All of the large room ones we have tried just don't seem to cut it however the next size up generally is greater than 2000 sq ft.
Hi Eric, I will sometimes put a stew kettle on the stove and let it slow boil. Hope y'all are doing ok in this artic blast.
It seems strange watching this from the UK, due to our oceanic climate we have to spend all winter fighting to reduce Humidity & basically doing the exact opposite to everything recommended in this video 🙂.
Thank you)))
@10:25 - water evaporations also create negative ions without ozone ( various studies suggest it's good for people's health )
Thanks, 🙏
How long does humidity in a room last? I've bought a small humidifier, but it doesn't have a self ajustable feature. Can't I put it on for an hour and it'll be good for the night or will I have to leave it on (as I suspect I will anyway). I want it for my bedroom while I sleep because my bedroom is newly made and is bone dry causing me some serious sleep problems. I like the window open a little at night too and I'm wondering what effect that'll have particularly in the winter.
"You Can't Control Who You Fall For - Victor Lundberg" is the intro music.
🤠👍
That’s a very logical explanation, But not what we were looking for?
Hi Eric, what does "U" in U-values of 0.35 or less means? You put that note at the bottom of the slide of "Ideal Indoor Humidity based on outside temp". I want to know so i could explain it when i shop at the Window supply store. Thanks Eric🙂
Could u kindly note the brand of the wireless forecast station at the beginning of ur video. Thnx
Good looking fire
Whats a good dehumidifier you recommend?
Have problems on my double pane thermo windows that are regular without low E. Can these windows be contributing to condensation on the windows.? I run a dehumidifier, have an air exchanger but still get condensation on the windows. Wondering if I should just upgrade the thermo glass In my windows to energy efficient ones.?
We are battling to lower our relative humidity. We are around 42%. We run a dehumidifier in basement. We are either going to raise temperature of indoor air or bring in more dry outdoor air. But then we need to heat that fresh air. We do have daily condensation on windows. Worse when it is colder outside.
What type of heating system and fuel do you use? Baseboard/radiator/forced hot air?
I have heard that propane/natural gas is a "wet" type of heat.
Is that what you have?
It is a two year old house. We burn wood with an outside air intake direct to Woodstove. Propane boiler baseboard for backup. We also have an air exchanger ventilation. 10 minutes an hour. Am trying 20 minutes. Plus it is on whenever bathroom in use. Very tight house.
Basement dehumidifier setting we are moving from 50% to 45% and now 40%.
@@SilverHeist Hmm, you would think the woodstove would have no problem keeping the humidity low. We run a woodstove as primary heat source and actually keep a kettle of water on top of it to add moisture to the air. We burn about 6 hours a day and add about 4-5 quarts water for that amount of burn. Keeps RH around 35% I imagine without the kettle of water, we would be around 25-30%
Silver Heist - you might have a leak in your vapour barrier system, your window/door jambs were not sealed properly to your vapour barrier, attic hatches aren’t sealed. A lot of variables....
42% is not high humidity. People need at least 40% to feel good. If you have condensation on your windows, it's the windows that are the fault point, not the humidity in your house.
I have baseboard heat but central air. Can I get while home humidifier?? I got major static in winter in my home
Forget winter humidity. Here in Vegas, it's dry ALL THE TIME! My skin is breaking first week I moved here. All houses here should have humidity enhancement. But what if my fan blower does not run for days or even weeks? Would that be a problem? There are times in the year when I get optimal temperature for weeks and my a/c (or heater) don't need to turn on. Will these systems cause a leak in my ceiling?
You can make your own humidifier that does not use electricity and easy clean get rid of mold unlike store bought humidifiers.
Get a tall pot and microfiber towel(s) , role it up and stand it up in the pot. The water will wick up the rolled up towel. And you can add a fan if want to push the moister out into room.
Then you can clean the pot and wash the towel or soak towel in vinegar or bleach killing the mold unlike store bought machines that regularly need the wicks changed and inside scrubbed or you will be putting mold all over your house.
Ah.. Dewpoint is the key. Like you said,, Relative Humidity is always Relative to the Temperature... Not very many people actually understand it.. A Summer afternoon, a light rain on the Blacktop road, and the steam?????/Fog??? /Moisture starts smoking up from the road.. Is it steam? The road is not 212 degrees and boiling the water from liquid to steam... Correct?
It is temperature variance that causes it.. The fluctuating dewpoint, Relative to temperature and humidity..
If you need more humidity in your house from running a wood stove, put a drip pan on your wood stove and drip cool water into it.. If you really want to blow the humidity into your house, install a 3" pipe into your wood stove, come out and 90 degrees up.. You will have to rig up a float driven drip system (fairly simple), that will drip cold water from a bucket outside(maybe), into the heated water into the pipe heated from the inside of the stove.. The cold water hitting the hot water will really get the moisture going again.. I had 3 pots on my wood stove.. Filled them up several times a day and still had trouble getting over 35% humidity.. The simple drip system, I was able to use the water much more effectively and seems like the water dripping into the pipe evaporated almost as fast as it dripped into the pipe.. Just some food for thought if you wanted to tinker with it.. I'm sure you will get positive results.. Interesting video.. Cheers.. !! I have to get back to work now... :)
On another thought.. If I could ever figure that one out, I would be talking about "Cold Brewed Moonshine".. Ha..Ha.. :)
Mold is growing everywhere because of the high humidity
I buy a 50 Pint Frigidaire to small room, after 1 to 2 hours the humidity down to 50% but!!! after stop it, the humidity start to increase again very quickly to 60-65% even in the nights up to 80%. Why in hell the humidity up too quickly, at this point it seems I need have the dehumidifier on the whole day! That consume a lot energy and is loud, any help please!!!! again why up too quickly?
I have the problem of excess humidity in the winter :( baring mold growth with a baby on the way
Great video. Thank you! …Now about all those tomatoes… what I’m saying is that you don’t need them all!! So I’ll take some off your hands! lol:D Take care, man. :)
If the glass is the Ambient Temp(in your example) and can hold x amount at a given temperature, then the smaller glass representing a lower temperature, means it Cannot hold as much water. It's incorrect pouring the same amount of water into the smaller glass. Should have poured in Less.
Hi -I live in England. I’m a bit confused. We don’t normally add humidity to our houses . If anything I’m trying to remove it. Wouldn’t adding humidity just add to your condensation problems with the windows?
yes the dew points. Western America is nose bleeding dry in the cold winter months.
Is it the same when you say humidifier same as dehumidifier?
I ha e a dehumidifier modifier..that collects water...
Two litres every day and a half..
Any tip?
That is the opposite, takes out the moisture
I’m in Arizona and I just can’t seem to add enough humidity to my house. Any suggestions??
Evaporative cooler(s) will do (various options). A 100-250 watts portable ones can evaporate half a gallon of water per hour ( likely much more in Arizona ).
If you shower with the door closed, where does the humidity go?
Starts at 5:59
You’re welcome
Wonderful info. thank-you so much! Blessings to you all:) P.S. is it me or does Eric look at little tired?
He's a smart fella Maybe he works 3rd shift You're comment kinda diss relevant
Well. My house is brand new, I better replace all my windows because mine must ve cheap crap... 😉
I’m in a rental this sucks
The bigger problem is over loading the
😮😊
😊
😊
Overloading the presser with multiple signals which lt cannot process is a common problem. Fix that and that speeders up today’s Major problem!
Yeah just wanted my house less humid. Thats all I was looking for.
Then you want a dehumidifier which takes out the humidity. This is to add humidity which is my problem. Can we switch problems or meet in the middle? 😂.
GOOD FOR THE CORONAVIRUS
not between 40%-60%
Get into the point man damn
Like your videos but what’s up with the Celsius chart. Fahrenheit please. Celsius is for the devil and Canadians.
Hey! As a Canadian I’m offended 😂
This is the result when you did not have the chance to go to school.......
Wow! I just had to watch 3 adds to get through the whole video. :(
No help at all
