Very true! That’s the concept of the video ya, but it’s CZcams, they like drama haha

You’re being very legit. These guys are clowns, Canada is terrible.
There should be allowances with the cap that take into account tax players play on their salary.
Conversely, all players should be taxed at the rate where the NHL is based as a business. (New York City) I know the players are technically employees of each team, and not the league, but that's an easy fix - have the league be the company, and the teams just be various "departments"
@@JoeyVilleneuve that an alternate, but think you need to keep the league and teams separated on some things. Great idea though.

Hah!
Oh, it gets worse.
*alternative
You do not know what the word ''alternate'' means.
Get an education.
The taxes are huge when competing against a southern team that also has no winter. The ridiculous pandemic response up here has probably scared even more off. NHL playing in empty rinks up here was insane, people need to go to prison for the preposterous lockdowns that took place in Canada.
Dude, you can watch video after video of American citizens being physically removed from businesses over masking, then being arrested. Don't think for a moment that Canada's response to COVID was worse than the USA. In fact, the entire 'trucker' issue began when the USA insisted that cross border truckers be va X ed. That's where it started. Trudeau isn't original enough to come up with his own stuff so he just copied it.
Same thing is true of californian teams. Players rather play somewhere where there are less taxes
Big time tax in Cali!
Must be why all the best players in the league run to Florida...
@@phillip7853for sure, most players come from cold environments, so the idea of beautiful weather and more money on your checks is a no brainer to choose lol
I'm Canadian, Its 6am in Canada, Hockey practice, then school and then back to hockey practice. home for dinner and then out to the ODR(outdoor rink) for more hockey
Friggen right!!
It ain't the fan base in Canada that's the problem, simply it's Canada's tax bite. The NBA compensates the Americans playing for the Raptors because of Canada's income tax.
Some states have high taxes too. Like California and new york. Some provinces have lower taxes like Alberta
@@Rmo94 As someone who lives in Toronto and who is working on a move to California I'll take equal taxation for a MUCH better living experience.
@justinbutera8945 Yes thats true, but a hockey player in California wont get near the endorsements etc...
30 years of Bettman fucking Canada
Facts!
Winnipeg Jets.
You barely touched on endorsements. A successful player in Canada has the opportunity to make millions in endorsements that a player in the US will never see, Comes with the territory of recognizability that you don't get in the US.
For sure! We covered reasons why a player would choose the US over Canada. Not the pro’s of playing in Canada. That could be an entire video itself!
Canada is a wonderful nation…long underestimated and often ignored by the U.S. at large. My parents are Canadian. I used to spend summers in Manitoba. In short, I love Canada. As a 52 year-old American, my outlook is shaped by experience and wisdom. With that said, I wouldn’t want to play in Canada if I were an NHLer in my 20s or 30s…not if I could make more money AND remain familiar with all the nuances of life in the States I grew up with. Life in the two countries IS different. That doesn’t necessarily make one better than the other. They are just different.
Solid comment! Thanks for sharing!
I’m sure Canada is great. Their government on the other hand…is creepy.
No, the insane Canadian tax rate and extreme far left politics of Canada make a black hole for anyone with half a brain.
As a Canadian Habs fan, I would rather play in Miami, Tampa, or L.A.
The reasons are simple. Less pressure
Lower taxes (more $)
Better weather
As a multi-millionaire,, I'd enjoy my beach house, boat, year round golf.
Those are definitely major, major factors in decision making for free agents.

If you just want to be a working hockey player, play in the USA. If you want the opportunity to be a legend, play in Canada. If and when the Leafs win the cup, those guys will be worshipped like gods long after they're dead. The average Las Vegas resident can't name a single player on the reigning Cup champions roster.
FACTS!
I'm not sure, I could be wrong. But I think there was some movie that came out over 20 years ago. I think a cartoon? A song that said "Blame Canada. With all their hockey hulabalooo, Blame Canada!" Maybe that was a fever dream.
Lol Doesn’t ring a bell but maybe!

"And that bitch Anne Murray, too."
that song still rings true!
If they don’t wanna play in Canada… don’t! 😊. BTW, count the number of Canadians on the best performing NHL teams. Your Welcone!
Absolutely! Bring the boys home haha
I thought The Curse of the Bambino was going to be the longest-running sports curse. However, that all changed on December 6th, 1995. While the Bambino's curse only affected one team, The Curse of Patrick Roy looks like it's affecting an entire country's worth of teams from getting the Cup! 👍
Haha Dec 6th 1995, a night Habs fans, and Canadians will never forget!
Canadian teams are practically a separate league within the NHL. There are not many advantages to this.
You dont mention the benefits of playing in Canada. More fans, more endorsements, a legacy. If you won a cup in a Canadian market you are a legend for the rest of time. Im talking fourth liners and backup goalies. I guarantee the average person in vegas or ft lauderdale doesnt know the names of anyone on their nhl squad.
Absolutely! HUGE upside to playing in Canada for all those reasons 100%
Canada doesn't win cups anymore.
The curse is real lol
You know there's a lot of transplants from the midwest, the northeast and Canada in Vegas, right? Hell, in my neighborhood alone there's a couple from Toronto, a guy from Edmonton and another from Calgary.
You don’t even actually need to win shit, I’m from Calgary and Iginla is absolutely revered here. I have to imagine it’s the same with Naslund and Sundin and anyone who played for the same team for a long time.
The camera shutter sound is incredibly annoying
I'm from edmonton and I don't blame them. I used to begrudge the idea but now I totally get it
Never been to Edmonton myself, but Ive heard the winters can be pretty brutal!
About 90% off the time when a player wants out of a Canadian team their career ends up worse. With the Jets alone I'd argue: Ladd, myers, kane, Dubois, roslovic, Laine, burmistrov, armia, niku, chiarot, copp all worse. Trouba I'd say neutral. Better off maybe tanner glass and thorburn cuz they at least won?
I wouldn’t say 90% of the time but maybe it’s just because you don’t hear about that player much after they leave the team.
There being only 7 Canadian NHL teams vs. 25 in USA has nothing to do with it.
Agree!
Only the money part you have correct. Comparing Canadian teams and market environments to US is apples to oranges. NFL and NBA players in the US get the same scrutiny as hockey players in Canada.
The sad fact is that most of the decisions on where to play come down to dollah dollah bills. As you point out, higher taxes, currency exchange and bigger off-rink opportunities make it difficult to keep elite players on Canadian teams. As you cited Tchuk and Goudreau, they are perfect examples. Tchuk is American and got a pile of $$$ to go to Fla. And Johnny cashed in, as Calgary struggled with a rebuild and his playoff prospects appeared grim.
Follow the money people. It's almost always the money.
Great points, Gaudreau and Tkachuk actually left to be closer to family. I believe they left money on the table, or the same amounts in Calgary. But overall, agree!
As a young dude with a lot of money, South Florida sounds like a much nicer place to live then Canada 🤷♂️

@@davidgoreskidrums home is always home... if you're treated like a god and it's snowing, or sun and nobody? Some prefer the limelight. Tkchuk went closer to family.
"Same level of scrutiny". The Lightning players have admitted - they can walk down the street in Tampa, St. Petersburg (Fla) and they aren't bothered because nobody recognizes them. Sure Crosby and Malkin would draw a crowd in PIttsburgh, but would the average Yinzer know who Joe Pavelski or Barkley Geaudreu are?

Thanks!! It’s not in trouble 😉 we love the NHL!
Florida Panthers is not a "small market" American team. Miami metro population is over 6 million. Calgary metro is less than 1.5 million...
Markets aren’t judged on population size. Factors such as revenue, TV viewership, fan base size, media attention etc are all considered in. But overall small markets I think you could say are “non-tradition” hockey markets.
Where the hell did the title "NHL Hockey Is In Trouble" come from? Not remotely related to anything that was covered.
Re. the tax argument - there’s great benefit for players to sign contracts in a tax free state like florida (is only one that I can think of)- over skating for Canadian clubs, sure but playing your home games at MSG may be more costly than for canadian teams - there’s federal taxes, state taxes and New York City Income Tax. Players that live across the river in NJ get to pay that income tax as well - IS THAT FOUR tax returns? Yeesh - that league minimum hardly covers the cost of living!!!
I Wonder about European players - My son did a year in Norway and we were shocked at how much he had to pony up!! those countries have VAT taxes and an extremely high percentage on income and are required to kick in for healthcare too. I wonder what taxes are expected from citizens who work outside the country. whole lot to consider -
A lot of factors to consider yup!
In regards to your last sentence; America is one of the few nations where citizens still have to file an income tax return even if they no longer live there. When I lived in California I wasn't required to file a Canadian income tax return. But my wife, who I met there, still has to file with the IRS even though she hasn't lived there for 20 years now.
And you have to remember. Players play taxes in every market they play in. So while there is no state income tax in Texas....a Stars player will pay California income taxes for the games they play there.
Their accountants are likely very busy people. Four tax returns? Closer to 25 likely. Yeesh! Hahaha. Needless to say, I doubt they do their own returns. Actually I think all of that will be handled by their management teams. Who are also getting between 3-5% of the player contract for services rendered, which go far beyond just negotiating the contract. For instance they will handle a lot of the logistics if a player is traded (housing, schools for the kids...so on and so on.)
It's easy to think "Wow two million dollars a year to play hockey, lucky guy" but the truth is players likely only see half of that money. Not a bad living at all right? I'd take it quite happily. But your average player who may only have a five year career? They may not be as set for life as you think.
That said. It's a nice start to the next stage of your life considering most players are done by their late 20s. I didn't have a few million in the bank when I was 27. Not even sure I had a thousand. Hahaha
Well thanks for dumping on the land that created this great game and the hockey families that give so much to hockey and the NHL.
I would play for food and housing anywhere in the NHL...
Legit! Haha Its the dream!
Vancouver has good weather most of the year. Playing in Toronto is great. They really will overpay you and you always have a short spring. Head home after the first round is over and play some golf.
😂😂😂
Am pretty sure players are pondering their tax bracket when in game seven of a series ending playoff game. 😅
You're right, but I will guarantee you that every pro athlete has an agent/business manager behind him that is thinking about it 24/7/365.
What a poor argument. It implies they don't do it at all, which is laughably false. They also probably aren't thinking about their family, which by your logic would imply they don't care about that either.
Probably they are focused on the game, as that is the most important thing going on in their life, at that moment. As they should be.
The media argument is nonsense. There is media pressure in Montreal and Toronto, sure. But that is nothing compared to what NFL players go through. I am highly dubious of any pro player that complains about that. You want to play at the highest level,?Then you will get scrutinized. Don't like it? The KHL would love to have you. Also, want to lose fans respect? Be a millionaire that PLAYS A SPORT for a living, then complain about your financials.
Extremely valid point! The NFL is for sure a different beast than the NHL. All we’re saying is the media/ fan pressure in Canada is higher than in the US. Some players can handle it, some don’t wanna deal with it and choose not to.
Well that is tone deaf if you actually listen to PLAYERS. Ryan O'Reilly said if definitely played a major part to signing in Nashville who are playing great hockey. Oh wait there is more just from Toronto as Luke Schenn followed O'Reilly out of Toronto and onto Nashville. Tkachuk and Gaudreau both mentioned to media scrutiny and quality of life outside hockey were both mentioned. Matt Duchene chose Dallas. OEL chose Florida etc etc Just look at the players leaving Canadian teams and signing with American teams, then compare those moves to positions of NEED with current Canadian contenders. Then ask why they didnt sign. It WASNT the money. Now those last three I dont have concrete evidence it was the media as in the PLAYER actually saying it played a part of their decision, but it DOES play a major role in a players decision, to say otherwise is naïve or just ignorant of life.
Bruh Hockey players arent the same as NFL players they just aren't. Also we have actual verifiable accounts from players where their major complaint as to why they don't wanna play in Canada is because they are gonna recognized whenever they go out on the town and not be left alone and the Media is relentless and ruthless. Some Players shine under the pressure and do good others don't want that.
What does the NFL or your feeling towards players have to do with anything? These are reasons (as given by actual players) that they prefer playing in US markets. And as a whole, NFL and NHL players are very different. NHL players are more humble, laid-back people.
Simple mathematics. Fewer games, and shorter careers = more scutiny.@@phillip7853
The media point is the reason why the NHL will never grow to their potential. All other high level sports league has a lot of scrutiny.

States in the US don’t offer no tax to NHL players. Some states just have lower income tax and therefore are more appealing.

Honestly would you rather have people care too much about you or not care at all? That’s basically the contrast between Canadian and American markets. Sure if you’re successful you have US fans cheering but how many of them are bandwagoners?
lol bandwagoners.... What does that even mean? I love how the NHL loves talking about growing the game then has people like you saying oh yeah but A he's a bandwagnor ehhh. I think it's more about what the player wants tbh. Do they want to create a legacy with their team (Canadian or not). Or do they want to play hockey, make their money and not be bothered. A lot of players want the latter.
Bandwagoners or not, any intro into hockey for a fan is a positive move to grow the game.

US markets are a lot more dedicated than you might think. The Boston Bruins and the St Louis Blues have some of the most dedicated fans I have seen in the sport. My whole family were crying tears of joy when the Blues won the Cup; it was *that* big of a deal
NHL needs to even the tax base, and pay players in same dollars.
All players actually get paid in USD, even when playing for a Canadian team.
They get paid in USD, and how would the league "even the tax base?"

Once you have millions of dollars in your bank account why would you want to live in a remote province in Canada when you could do the same profession in Florida, Texas, or Tennessee?
To each their own I guess!
Many do. Primarily European or Canadian born players. America isn't for everyone. Lots of Swedish players stay in Canada after their careers are done. Pretty sure life is good anywhere if you have millions in the bank.
As a Canadian the only place I’d consider going with millions of dollars is Florida not Texas or Tennessee.

I think you're missing one major point that's a bit tongue in cheek. Ever heard the term she's a Saskatchewan nine but an LA four? Lets be honest these are young guys with hormones, I'm sorry to say this but the cities of Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, in Vancouver are not exactly known for their attractive young ladies. Don't get me wrong I'm sure plenty of them are beautiful but in cities like Los Angeles in cities like Chicago and cities like New York or Tampa it's more frequent.
Hahaha honestly great point! The “site seeing” aspect of some of the cities may help for sure. It’s at least a nice feature for the rookies lol
another thing to think about is population remember the us has 10 times the population of course theres going to be more beautiful ladies did u consider that lol all those places in canada have around 3 to 5 million people compared to the places in the us with 10 plus million people
Duh! A place like Winnipeg has a population of 700,000 and LA has 4 million. Of course it's going to be more frequent. And one's geographical logistical location has no bearing on one's appearance or genetics if you were born in Canada or The United States.. That's like saying people born in Nevada are better looking than people born in North Carolina. Just admit you are mentally challenged
A moot point.
@@incumbentvinyl9291 if ur talking about my point it wasnt really about the video it was about this guys comment the guy says players would not choose to go to canada because there are more hot girls in the USA of course there are how can u even compare the 2 theres bound to be when ur population is 10x thats all my point was ok
they come from a culture that doesn't embrace the game like canada does. it's why we still dominate the game to this day. don't come here as a player if you aren't made of the right stuff.
Valid! I wouldn’t say Canada is dominating by any means anymore though. Other countries have caught up.
Canada has won 3 of the last 4 Gold medals at the WJC, 2 of the last 3 world championships, dominated the last best on best olympic games, has 43% of nhl players, and by far the most elite nhl players including the best player in the league and the best dman in the league. No one is close.
Last best on best was so long ago tho, 10 years? The gap has closed internationally, I still think Canada is the best. But it’s not like it once was. And who is gonna play in net for Canada in a best vs best tourny??
Arguing Canada’s dominance in hockey sort of proves the videos point. Canada produces the bulk of the best hockey players, but we have to back to over 30 years ago to find a Canadian team with the Stanley Cup. Canada creates the best Hockey players, but why can’t they keep them?
So clickbaity I'm hearing clicks as the video plays
The nature of CZcams, but the content is true.
What’s more, US citizens playing in Canada have to pay income tax to BOTH countries. Even further disincentive for Americans to play here.
Not sure that’s how it works exactly, I believe you’d just pay tax based on where your primary residence is. But not 100% sure.
NHL players pay taxes per game. In states with low tax, they get more take home in a game. 82 games a year they get paid, so players in low tax states get 41 games a year they pay lower taxes.
Teams like toronto can bypass this slight disadvantage a bit with huge upfront contracts that give a ton of the money before a season starts
Not how income tax works...

top 3 most valuable as in how much money they have/make? yeah thats the massive fanbases doing that, which - as stated in the video, can sometimes be a negative. and for the Arizona thing i don't think there's that many players that REALLY wanna go to Arizona, i feel like the weather matters the most when considering Arizona because.... their whole lives depend on skating around on ice, now they gotta live in a hot desert? doesn't seem that ideal
