I was stationed in the Mojave desert in California and would go through different reservations to get home in N Az, I really enjoyed hearing these songs and always takes me back, I hadn't heard them for a while then when NDAPL happened at standing rock I saw a line of Mojave Bird Singers in the front lines and it really hit me in the feels, was a powerful image

It's good to see that the song and dance is still around. But I know if the old ones were still here like Robert, joe, Ernie,. The young ones would have more respect for our ways. We did not ever dance in pants as women we wear our dresses always . These our sacred songs and way of life. Now it seem to be that it's just social entertainment for some. Good job I'm happy bird is still here

The Chumash from Santa Ynez, CA, intertribal singers have their own style in their language "ki-new-ish", which is close to bird singing.

    • @AmigoKandu
      @AmigoKandu  Před 6 lety +2

Very old songs, maybe thousands of years. Southern California region from Pacific Ocean to the Colorado River, and also some in Southern Arizona.
Songs about Nature, and the Animals. The seasonal migrations of Birds is important theme.
The dancing is like the Birds do on the ground.
Women rarely sing, except for Peon Game songs.
The gourd rattle for rhythm was inspired by the Rattlesnake.
Each set of songs are a "cycle" to be completed. The song leader might take short breaks between songs, or quickly continue to next song.
Men and women have dance styles, much like birds in nature.
Each tribe may have different dance steps... in the past, they were separated by great distance.
Tribes created their own songs, and styles of singing, and rhythms of the rattle gourd.
Here, (this video) at Cabezon Tribe's Fantasy Springs Casino Resort Event Center, located at Indio, California.
In November the Tribes gather here to sing in public.
The big group of women dancers may be many types of tribes.
Tribes: Kumeyaay, Luiseño, Serrano, Cahuilla, Quechan, Cocopah, Mojave ( & more)
I hope this explains what this video contains.
