Andy is a drummer, producer and educator. He has toured the world with rock legend Robert Plant and played on classic prog albums by Frost and IQ.
As a drum clinician he has played with Terry Bozzio, Kenny Aronoff, Thomas Lang, Marco Minneman and Mike Portnoy.
He also teaches drums privately and at Kidderminster College - Hudba
My favorite Tony recording was the 1976 Herbie Hancock VSOP double record
1- Piano Introduction
2- Maiden Voyage
3- Nefertiti
4- Introduction of Players/Eye of the Hurricane
ESP by Miles Davis is also well worth a listen
I appreciated him for a lifetime...
Williams was a force of nature
Not to forget Tony's last album "Tony Williams - Wilderness", on which he also used orchestral arrangements...
YES!!!

Another great drummer, appreciate getting information on Tony Williams other release’s. I always wondered what he was doing in the late 70’s and further on. Thanks
Interesting as usual....i always go to find interviews with these artists after watching the vids...
Don't forget he played on the Holdsworth great track Looking Glass.
A video on Jeff Sipe would be amazing. Such an under the radar drummer.
I love your contributions to SOT! I finally popped over to your channel for a look. The first video I catch you talking about is Tony Williams! I studied drums for a while in Middle School, but my love for the visual arts won my Heart! I love my music, you wouldn't know it from my 3000 CD's! 🤣😂🤣
Welcome aboard!
Enjoyed this video! Have discovered so much good music on your channel... keep 'em coming!
The Arcana was a good shout. I accidently came across it looking for B. Laswell stuff. I first heard or became aware of Tony via the "Million Dollar Legs" album (which some people still hate) then had to do my research as a kid. Phenomenal contribution to drums and music.
...it's been years (Amazon sez I bought it in 2010) since I read Jack Bruce's bio. IIRC, there some Lifetime info in there. I will revisit while listening to those recordings.
Love the way you are pointing the modern listeners in the right direction. I came up as an Elvin guy- saw him a couple of times in a pure jazz setting and JD once and came to Tony later (Foreign Intrigue era) and FINALLY heard a jazz drummer play rock- made a big impression and had me diving back into him.
I'm pretty much the same as you....although I got into him early on through the Stanley Clarke album
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer I went to it half an hour ago and still digging it.
STANLEY CLARKE yep once again agree 100% probably the greatest JazzRock album, certainly my favourite...never to be repeated!!
Glad you mentioned Joy Of Flying...that was very influential on me.
Wilderness was a bit of a strange album from 96, rom what I recall that featured him with Stanley, Pat, Herbie and Michael Brecker. I must dig it out and listen again perhaps it will sound better now.
Was only listening to Swing Of Delight a couple days ago...,
Nice one Andy
Nobody ever discusses the masterpiece "Sweet Revenge" because it's on the less-popular 2nd Lifetime album with Holdsworth, "Million Dollar Legs". JUST EPIC!!
I wasn't so keen on Million Dollar Legs.....
Tony played drums on the Bill Laswell produced Public Image Ltd. album from 1986 simply called "Album." Steve Vai played guitars and I think Ginger Baker was on it as well.
Incredible album which i discuss in my Bill Laswell video if you fancy another watch
Watching your videos is making me look into taking up drumming. The butterfly effect of CZcams 👍🏻
You should! Check out my Patreon where you can get a lesson every month plus access to more videos!
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer already there, good sir 😎
Love your videos, I keep discovering new music through your recommendations. Just ordered Arc of Testimony, I sampled it and loved it. Thanks for your videos and unique musical insights. .
Awesome! Thank you!
Tony's also great on Mike Mantler's "Movies". Dark stuff.
Great show! Pretty sure my 1st Tony record was the same Stanley Clarke a!bum. Your copy is very clean, BTW. Eventually, picked up fhe Blue Note must-haves...Jackie McLean's VERTIGO (his 1st recording?), Dolphy's OUT TO LUNCH, Andrew Hill's POINT OF DEPARTURE, & Tony's LIFETIME and SPRING. The 2nd Great 5-tet stuff is forever...Tony is just roaring on their live albums (FOUR AND MORE, LIVE AT THE PLUGGED NICKEL). My favourite Drummer. Still.
I got anearly live Miles album out the library when I was young. But I didn't get Tony then...
I'm glad I discovered your channel, you are doing outstanding work. I'm curious what your thoughts are on the "Miles in the Sky" album and its "jazz rock" leanings. That first track "stuff" is like an anthology of Tony licks with the main groove 4 on the snare ala Motown. I always felt that got a bit slighted when discussing jazz rock fusion, and considering it came out in 1967 it predated a lot of the other music that gets most of the credit for fusing the different styles
Another great show! I picked up the second Arcana album from your recommendation when you did the Bill Laswell show last year. Fantastic indeed! I also like Tony’s playing in Herbie Hancock’s Quartet album with the young Wynton Marsalis!
Yes I have that too and it nearly made my list..some great jazz drumming on there
Nice summation. I think you've hit all the high points, but I wouldn't necessarily write off the acoustic band that Tony led in the 90s. Tony was sort of in his "Art Blakey mentor" phase, and that band was filled with players who literally became stars. Fwiw, his playing with the Trio of Doom became ultra-fiery because, as legend has it, Tony wanted to strangle Jaco for his "meanderings" and his tendency to show everyone up.
I agree with all that and liked his 80s group. I just alluded to the critics attitude...
hehe... as a Loughran (Lockrun) the Loffrun comes up a lot.. ... :)
I love Joy of Flying and also Play or Die... I would often play Joy of Flying to my friends who weren't into my heavier jazz tastes...
At least I'm trying to say it right for the pedants...
I got JOY OF FLYING more recently (maybe 20 years ago?). LOL. Anyway, it was weird seeing the bassist from Huey Lewis & The News in the credits. I had no idea!
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer to be honest it could be pronounced differently depending on where you live. In Armagh (where my ancestors are from) it was pronounced more like "Lauren". Seems like even John might have his own pronunciation... he doesn't seem to mind either way...
TRIO OF DOOM is from the Havana Jam...:-0 I was wondering if you would mention the 2 Arcana albums...& you did! ARC OF THE TESTIMONY was recently reissued with different artwork. The 1st one may be more difficult to find. Not for the faint of heart.
Yes...my mind goes blank sometimes, I used to stop and start again but then the video loses the spontaniety
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer I like that you don't "punch in"... keep it live! :-)
"New" Tony Williams PLAY OR DIE due out this month? Patrick O'Hearn on bass. I am not familiar at all with this one. Samples up on Amazon Music.
I know that album, its really good...check out my Tony W vid on Sea of Tranquility
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer ...thank you for the reminder!

Never loved this drummer. Each time I listen an album with a weird drum sound and not sot groovy, I read the credits : tony williams on drums. LOL.
Ha ha...each to their own I suppose.....
