Ran across your video and wanted to add my two cents. I retired as a CW4 in March 2015 and served as a 311A, CID Special Agent. Yes, life as Warrant Officer at times may be a lonely one but, a few things to remember: 1. You serve as a "Subject Matter Expert" in a particular field. You must be your own advocate especially with your chain of command. While the burdeon of additional duties some would argue within the chain may need to be shared equally amoung fellow Company and Field Grade Officers, your focus should always be your technical expertise. Educate yourself continually, if you don't know find out. The ultimate sin is failing to know or more importantly, where to go to find the answer. Know your AR's as they pertain to your technical field. I would argue there is no need within DOD to procure outside contractors but increase the number of Warrant Officers. 2. You are a Commissioned Officer! There is no difference between you and those commissioned when 2LT's. You can command! You are now designated either a Company Grade or Field Grade Officer and entitled to the respect and protocol's your rank designates. If you are a CW3 you need to speak with your Bn Cdr if you report to a CPT and find yourself performing duties similar to a 1LT. Again, your not serving the Army correctly if your focus is away from your expertise. When the BDE CDR has a problem your the one that needs to step up and resolve the issue, find the solution develop the course of action. You need to sell yourself to those Senior Leader's and demonstrate via your actions you belong at the table with them, included in planning meetings and problem solving sessions. 3. Don't worry about pissing people off. As long as your actions are true and your interests serve the Army you have nothing to worry about. Your not there to be the "Yes Person" your there to solve problems, find answers and make appropriate recommendations. Best wishes to All!
Chief, Thanks for watching and thanks for your input. I admire your attention to detail in an effort to assist the future of our forces. You provided a ton of valuable input and I am sure it will help me and many others. I hope that I didn’t offend you or any there WOs with the extent of my honesty. If I did , that was not the intent of my message. With that said, I am who I am, I may not always be agreeable, but I’m honest to the best of MY knowledge and I always intend to be transparent, providing my input from my foxhole. My vantage point is not the same as many others because my background and viewpoint are different. It’s great that we can discuss these viewpoints on a public forum in a civil manner. Again, I appreciate your input and your support, it does not go unnoticed.
One of my fellow NCOs and I both put packets together for the board in November. One of the things we joked about was how it seemed like warrant officers are in a secret society because no one gives up any information. I hope we get the chance to learn the secrets. Great videos, really appreciate you
My brother! Congrats on taking that 1st step in putting in the packet. Also I appreciate you watching the videos. Yea, once you get selected and finished school, you’ll see man, it’s a secret society lol 😆. With that said, I just want to help, I’m waiting on the call from the Top Dots telling me to take my videos down lol, until then, I’m here if you guys need me. Let me know when you’re selected and let me know if you need specific knowledge, I might make a video about it! Good luck brother!
Life, as a Chief Warrant Officer is what you make of it! If you let any senior personnel walk on you ... you're going to be known as a door mat! I used to let every officer in the wardroom know the chain of command in this squadron is, as follows ... there's the Skipper ... then ME! He signs my fitness report ... I work to keep him happy. The rest of you are here to support the mission. If you're a cake ... you're going to get eaten! CWO4/USN/Ret
Pat, Thanks for the comments and the advice, I really appreciate it! I should probably update this video as every single day provides us with new perspectives. Great advice and even better perspective, I appreciate it!
just got selected for WOCS two days ago and have watched all your videos pertaining to the cohort multiple times. Thank you so much for your insight and I'd love to pick your brain IOT expand my knowledge base moving forward!
Patrick, Man, thanks for watching and supporting the channel, it means so much to me. Congratulations on your selection, it’s not easy being one of the few. Now you just gotta lock in, focus and make it through the course, there is light at the end of that long tunnel. Good luck to you brother!
You need a senior warrant mentor. If you feel lonely as a warrant, you need to communicate with your O-grade counterparts. WOs are officers. Never forget that. WO help develop junior officers to senior officers because of the massive time in grade they have . WOILE and WOSSC will hone your MOS immaterial abilities to perform as a staff officer beyond your roll as a technical expert. Being a successful multi-functional WO at the BN and BDE level starts by learning how all the Army core S and G staff functions work together.
Aviation Warrant Officer Vs Walking Warrants, completely different worlds. If you call a Aviator, Chief he will respond “Do I Have Feather On My Head”, “Am I wearing anchors”. Walking Warrants seemed to like being called chief. To an Aviator a chief is a enlisted CrewChief. Aviation WO’s have very little motivation in any additional duties not involving flying. Flying is something you can easily kill your self or somebody else, if you not focused totally on it, weather turns ugly , people shoot at you & things break. CW3 USAR (Ret.) Class 86-5 Navy Blue.
CW3 Cook thanks for watching and welcome to the family, also thank you for your service. You are speaking straight facts. I was in the 1/6 CAV for 6 years when I was enlisted and wouldn’t have dared to call any of the pilots Chief. But I like it for me being a Tech Guy because I hate Sir, makes me feel like an O grade. I definitely have a lot of love and respect for my Aviators because they always knew the job and made sure I was safe whether I was in a convoy with them up above or riding in as a passenger. It does kind of suck how they got treated though(details, additional duties in the troop, MTPs making their live suck lol) but all in all, most would say they love it. Thanks for your feedback Sir and cool name too(I know you get that a lot, even though it’s spelled differently).
Your one of the few Walking Warrants, who has understanding for the crap Aviators have put up within the Army. A AWO who worked in G3 Aviation Office at III Corps would put on a War Bonnet full of feathers on his head every time they called chief by all the Ground Field Grade officers. The ground Field Grades eventually learned not to call him Chief.
Yes Sir!! I learned extremely fast that that is not tolerated by my Aviators. With Flight school, Sere(purposely lowercased down for YT algorithm and OpSec) and all the other training Pilots go through, you guys deserve to be called whatever you want for real! Thanks for supporting my channel Sir.
Thanks for watching Spencer! If you shoot for the moon, at the very least you’ll hit the stars young brother!! Keep working, keep grinding and you will get where you need to be my guy. Good luck to you family!

Thanks for the comment brother and thanks for watching. Yes, WOs do have to purchase our own uniforms, we don’t get an annual clothing allowance. Yes, enlisted NCOs salute WOs. It’s often tough for WO1s because you can barely see the rank from a distance, so when I was one, a lotta people would pass and salute late, it was kind of funny to me.
