To everyone that maybe have assumed the alien was bad in this episode, the book confirms that the alien is actually just a very kind compassionate creature, they don’t trap ships or eat the crews, they comfort the people who actually get stuck there while they die and tries to let them go peacefully into death instead of screaming and kicking. So yeah! Nice alien, who would have guessed.
My favorite episode. It's the highest rated episode on IMDb, so I guess not just mine. The whole story is amazing. I would've loved a sequel or just a bit of explanation as to what is the creature that "helps lost souls" but the mystery makes it fascinating in its own way.
I think this is my favorite episode of the series too. I actually watched it when season 2 just came out. Apparently I missed this one and "Sonnie's Edge" when watching the first season! I like to think that "Gretta" was actually the first alien to get accidentally routed there. She is able to survive somehow as she is clearly a very advanced/evolved being herself. She actually helps other "lost souls" with their transition to a part of space that essentially a dead zone; is no way to get back "home" after being routed there. "Gretta" may use the ships' resources to survive, but mostly she realizes that living a life like that, each being the only member of it's species trapped an unfathomable distance in both space and time with limited resources is unsustainable. Thus she gives each of the "lost souls" the most pleasant possible death....
When thom finally wake up and saw the truth that was actually terrifies me ,but then i realized that the alien is kind, they makes illusion of happy things so they dont die in sadness
Ya'll talking about how much you loved this episode or Zima Blue need to read more Alistair Reynolds. While the man's characters could use some work, his stories are filled to the brim of mind bending plots and lovecraftian science fiction horrors like this that are all a morbid joy to read. Either way, I'm pleased he's finally getting a bit more mainstream recognition for his work thanks to Love, Death, and Robots. Hopefully we'll see more of his work adapted in future seasons because if there was any writer an anthology series like Love, Death, and Robots was made for, it is Alistair Reynolds.
Definitely. That game had a nice mind fuck in the plot too. Like who do I believe is the real me? The version that made January, or was it the one who made December, or is it the version who made October? Who am I?!?!

In the Aquila Rift the plot twist isn't even the simulation, is the fact that the alien is benevolent, the simulation is meant just to ease off reality for the guy. Everything in the simulation of Aquila rift is meant to explain to the guy, that reality isn't good as it looks, in the original story, the woman that they keep waking up isn't even alive, is just part of the simulation, the only thing that is real in the simulation os the alien and the captain... Also, theres hints all over pointing out that the creature is benevolent, one of the keys to understand this is the statue of virgin Mary that keep appearing all the time in the short.

The short story this episode is based on explains some of what the show leaves out, kinda wish they'd cut the sex scene for some of the development in the book but still an amazing episode.
Absolutely! Also the show tried to give it somewhat of an ambiguous ending which has it's own charm of course. The book answers some of the critical questions raised by the show.
Be as it may. Sex scenes in mediums create char devs in a short time span. A hasten bonding if you will. Imho, I concur to your point, but seeing how the entire show has limited timespans for each episode, the emotional binding, however "unneeded" as it may seem initially, between the two chars works just fine. The revelation that came after just makes you reflect on said intercouse and follows up on most viewers' shocked sentiments.
@@sushimuncher282 theres a problem tough, the real meaning of the story become just noise in the among the shocked viewer talks, the most important message is about universal love, and the sex scene kind takes the weight of this, wich is exactly what also makes the short more confused... Altough as Manah said, it makes it's own charm... To me both stories are complementary, this is also the reason why i think this story would fit better in a full lenght movie.
