    • @penumbra84
      @penumbra84 Před 7 lety +24

      radioguy1620 Wearing gloves is actually risky because it severely reduces both your tactile sense and your grip--much easier to drop something wearing gloves rather than using your bare hands. Especially the case in the rare book trade, where you're far more likely to rip a page while wearing gloves than you are to damage paper with skin oil for the small amount of time you're touching a page.

      Emily This a serious question. I was born in 1944 and always heard the terms Orient and Orientals, even in school. When did that become offensive?

    • @1220b
      @1220b Před 3 lety +9

      Asian encompasses Turkey, japan, Russia and in a sense Australian. To make sure the difference is known the word Orient is offen use. Hence why Universities, museums worldwide have departments of Oriental studies. Is Turkish the same as Chinese. No it's not !! So that's why Oriental is used instead of Asian. I think you best grab a map of the world and study it and stop being so offended. I bet you are the sort of person who thinks Africa is a country..

    • @stephanieyee9784
      @stephanieyee9784 Před 2 lety +1

      Why? It Is The Orient. In Britain "Asian" is used to describe people from the Indian subcontinent. Oriental or East Asian is used for people from, well Asia.
      I'm 38% Asian and have no problem with it being referred to as the orient.
      You are offended but don't specify Which Asian culture and/or history you're referring to! Asia is a huge continent so please, in future, be more specific when referring to "Asian" culture and history. You could be referring to the Philippines, Laos, Myanmar, Tibet, Cambodia etc.
