Seriously though, what was the point of connecting it to G4? A new audience of kids aren't gonna give a shit about who Twilight Sparkle is. It feels like they were torn in two directions - simultaneously trying to keep the brony fandom while appealing to a new audience of kids, and it just ended up being confused.
For me it's less a problem that these new shows have phones and social media and more that every main character is an 'influencer' now. Kids don't relate to that nor is it much of an escapist fantasy worth exploring because it's literally just the act of recording yourself.
The whole show just has a feeling of being immediately "dated" just by having phones at all. Yes, it's set in "cuReNt day" but current day tech is CONSTANTLY changing.
Nature, magic, and fantasy settings with always be enjoyed because they are so timeless, despite technically being extremely outdated. But nowadays, tech is commonplace and tired, and NATURE is the escapism. That's what bugs me about the show having tech tbh
I know like obviously kids have their little iPads and stuff, but not every kid is going to be linked to social media

I draw my own comics and the characters you phones and technology pretty frequently not to appeal to kids or anything but it makes plots easier to write sometimes. Lets say I want the characters to start a business they can advertise on social media and get a long line quickly and it could be plausible. A character can look up directions and get someplace right away. Its kinda like how in gumball you will sometimes see Gumball and Darwin on Elmore plus.

In G4, when the earth ponies' magic is taken, they become physically weak and faint. I have no idea why they changed it to plant magic/nature magic.
Honastly that would fit so much better especially since it was kinda confirmed ( at least I would say) that earth ponies are way more physically stronger
@mystic_scythe that's fair but the concept of growing plants also wouldn't or doesn't really work for every pony since not every earth pony has a cutie mark or job relating to plants
But honestly it's hard to find something to take away from ponies that are kinda like the humans of the universe where people can fly and shoot lasers

The animation looks good but also for me the smoothness and realistic softness of the ponies makes me realize further how wierd they look
How realistic the mouths move really throws me off too. Theres are section of animation where the quality drops randomly, just frame by frame where the quality will dip..it hurts

they way their legs bend really bothers me. all their walk/run/fly cycles look awkward and their ankles flex like wrists, it's just really unsettling.
The animation is horrendous
So many people see realistic textures/materials in 3d and see good quality. You can recreate this easily if you know what you're doing. The animation, design, and rigging are genuinely terrible.
I always thought Earth ponies were the only ponies that could grow plants from the earth
We've seen other ponies participate in earth pony traditions when it comes to tending to the world, so there's nothing saying that agriculture is exclusive to Earth Ponies, but we also see unicorns effecting clouds with their magic, implying ghat they could, in theory, effect the weather, too.
IIRC, Faust specified that Earth ponies have a "special connection" to the earth, and my interpretation of that is that Earth ponies have a natural perception of what nature needs to remain in tune, just as the Pegasai have for the weather, and the unicorns did have for the heavenly bodies, before the Alicorns took over.
G4 presented this really cool world building element that nature was basically broken, and every basic function, from tree leaf dropping, to rain, and the day-night cycle, all had to be handled manually. (except for the bizarre everfree forest)
This actually makes Earth Ponies super important, if they're the ones who know what has to be done to keep everything in order, save for the weather- even if the actual act of handling what needs to be done is now mostly automated or accomplished by magic.
....I really wish they explained why this isn't a problem in g5.

I thought it was just that earth ponies were physically strong enough to work the land. I feel like earth ponies were usually stronger than the other two races.
I always interpret that their magic are more sync with nature, therefore them doing stuff about tree and such is more effective
i’m kinda bummed out at how g5 turned out because i *really* wanted to give it a chance and thought people were treating it kind of unfairly because they didn’t want to let go of g4… except it turned out that even g5 didn’t want to let go of g4

In the same boat :(( when the synopsis came out people were upset by the wording "activist pony" (despite G4 being all for activism LMFAO) I was honestly rooting for G5. I'm disappointed in how it turned out, and I've been disappointed since the movie in all honesty

It’s “Opaline”, which is a word to describe something that is like opal, has the same sort of sheen as opal does, or (what *I* personally think is the reason for her name) a word for a specific kind of glass that looks like opal, but is in truth, just opaque glass with a sheen, similar to opalite & opalescent glass (though, the transparency is different between the three). Sort of an imitation opal, which looks beautiful, rare, & expensive, but still is just a poor imitation of something that’s much more of all those things.

There is a point in friendship in magic where the wendigos freeze over the leaders of each pony for disharmony among the races, but I literally dont understand why social media is the main way of communication instead of the scrolls literally takes away that magic. Not to mention it took like an entire three seasons for twilight to get her wings, and become an alicorn. It's obvious this new gen is to just sell toys, like most mlp, but now it's not even like.. hidden, especially with the confusing lore (and not to mention in the 2D animated series having unicorn fused animals which attracts buyers..).
Rarity does talk about making a business phone call, so phones did exist in G4, and even an arcade cabinet is shown on screen.
I don't think scrolls were the main means of communication for most ponies generally, but we just saw a rather biased perspective because we followed the protege of an ancient being who likes castles and whose formal standard of correspondence is parchment.
Celestia even blew Luna off when she got all excited over the concept of a post card. :(
But social media is a fact of life now, and these cartoons are made for children. IMO, we have hundreds of episodes and several G4 movies and specials (including EQG) where social media has minimal focus, so its totally reasonable for a new generation to try to cover new ground, modeling positive social media habits to children.
And, generally, G5 does that. Pipp uses her social media presence as a part of her business, and she treats it as a commitment and a tool. Moreso in TYT, but when it crosses over from that into an addiction or an unhealthy obligation, her friends call her out on it or help her, respectively.
For example, there's one episode where she promised to Livestream her entire day, but Pipp is overdoing it and gets sick. Her friends then continue the Livestream with a wholesome, candid moment between her and Hitch, about how he's become so nurturing through fatherhood, and how she needs to accept help and should rest.
That authenticity gets her stream a ton of likes, and Pipp gets the rest she needs.
That was absolutely true to the My Little Pony brand, while using smartphones and social media as a major part of the plot, and all within the truncated Tell Your Tale format. I was actually quite impressed. (I had put off TYT for years because the first few episodes were so... phenetic and seemingly shallow)
I wish G5 was generally stronger at storytelling overall, but from the perspective of what it is messaging to children, this isn't all that bad or destructive.
1, Can't really argue when they were apart.
2, Those scrolls seem to advance when they just bog magic back.
3, Twilight STAYED as an alicorn.
They really should've just made gen 5 its own thing.
They reference a bit of Gen 4 to appeal to fans of the old series, but I don't think they realize that kids will _also_ pick up on all the weird discontinuity and retcons. If they just started from scratch they wouldn't have had to worry about that.
Due to some research I did
there are typewriters, and due to the make and model, links similar to the 1920s model from the Royal Typewriter Company
and we have also seen pencils and pens in the show, but I can understand people wanting to be more old fashioned and use a traditional quill, especially for something such as professional documents
And having telegraph, let alone telephone lines would be costly and make no sense when they have a practical usage of magic to teleport messages via dragon's breath, or a line of Pegasi between between towns
But I can understand if they were in larger settlements like Manehattan
yet G5 didn't decide to make a magic equivalent of a phone?

My overall opinion as an oooooold woman who was playing with ponies in the 80s is that it's absolutely okay for the show to be different, and I like a lot of the things that make things different. Not all (cough social media cough) but a lot! My only problem is that it's aggressively bland. It's the same direction Hasbro are taking Transformers and D&D. Stale, samey, easy to churn out. Not strictly bad, but it just doesn't have any heart in it anymore.
Hard agree, this is so bland. I think they shot themselves in the foot by making it a canonical continuation of a 9 years long series. They should’ve just let it be its own thing.
The Marketing team and the executives really held this generation back. They tried to make a marketable product rather than a quality product.

I finished friendship is magic yesterday from a month long binge. I don’t have any nostalgia to attach to the older show and I’ve just started trying gen 5, and yeah I think that’s why I’m struggling to watch it? It just isn’t grabbing me the same way friendship is magic did, I don’t feel invested in the characters or in the world, I’m not really the best with my words but I can feel something is off about it.

5th Gen is Hasbro not wanting to spend the money that they spend of 4rth Gen and making everything in-house. Unfortunately they didn't hire competent writers this time around and the show suffers for it. Also, they should have left 4rth Gen out of this series and let it stand on its own, but they didn't have confidence in the material and added it.
It feels like they put most of their budget into the movie. Looking at things like the animation problems or the fact that half of the replacement voice actors for the main cast don't have many credits to their name, it's always given me the feeling that G5 was produced with a lot of cut corners.
As is a constant with Hasbro. Take a beloved franchise, make something good to revive interest, instantly try to "diy it themself", completely ruin the good thing they had going, outsource to people who can make something good, make something good to revive interest-

3:01 this isn't true, actually. In Gen 4, when earth ponies, pegasi and unicorns are in distrust of eachother, it causes the windigoes to appear and equestria has an eternal winter until they can get along again
In G4 his happened only in exceptional cases while in G5 you basically cannot have even the slightest quarrel without magical repercussions
I wish they had made the alicorns wings bigger. their height, wingspan and lenth of horns really helped you figure out how old they are

and keep in mind the movie was very high quality and many people praised the character design, just admit your problems are with the lighting and character movements, which did improve as the series went on might i add

It is sooooo weird seeing twilight, celestial and luna in this animation style. I miss the 2D one it looked way nicer than this. I’m also with you on the not liking Christmas that much as someone whose also had some bad ones. HALOWEEN SUPERIORITY!!!!!

Gen 5 needed more time in the oven and less corporate meddling.
One of the salon ponies is missing ears because they can't go against corporate to alter the model sheet. (her ears are hidden by hair in the 2D design, and it looks fine there, but it does NOT translate well to 3D)
Add in the fact that their intended plotlines had to be shredded due to character licensing issues (such as a more elaborate scheme in which Opaline was weaponizing Togetherness Tree magic) and that the full plot was spread between multiple media sources, (such as Zipp's visor coming from Tell your Tale, and the comics featuring the Canterlot ruins and Discord himself) there's basically no way for this show to have really succeeded.
Its a shame though- with more time and space, I feel like even some of the biggest supposed gaffes of G5 could have been addressed.
There could have been more compelling reasons for the Fall of Equestria than what we got, for example- people were cool on the idea after the G5 Movie, but most sensible fans didn't really hate it until they went and basically confirmed that Twilight's rule probably didn't even outlast America.
That kinda feels like shit, especially when they should have five Star-dribbling gods on their side.
The real losers here are the G5 superfans and the people who made the show, though.
There's definitely some quality diamonds in the rough here, from the characters, to concept art, design, and even some great keyframes in the rushed animation. (Especially those Izzy memefaces, top tier)
I hope that the fandom keeps the best of G5 alive and that the people who worked on this get a chance to work under less bullshit circumstances. Because the more I learn about the production of G5, the more I'm shocked that its half as good as it turned out to be.
I honestly think that the G5 fandom is so small that it mostly just consists of one particular Discord server and almost nothing else. Yeah, it's that bad, unfortunately. And even on that Discord server, a lot of people just think G5 is "fine". They keep watching, but they're not like incredibly enthusiastic about it.
It's just sad, really. G4 was so great and appealed to people of all ages, but G5 is just incredibly bland and mostly forgettable. Even I mostly just tolerate it at this point, but the passion I had for it during G4 is almost completely gone...

Due to the licensing issues I really think they should've just made the show its own continuity. They shouldn't have brought up Gen 4 stuff if they couldn't do it properly.
If they _really_ wanted to tie into Gen 4, don't pander and just build it up naturally. If you can't explicitly mention locations and characters, just imply it through context clues and focus more on other aspects of the lore.
I do wonder if part of the issue is that they set up Sunny knowing about Twilight in the movie, but then could barely use anything from Gen 4 in the show. So just hinting at stuff would've been odd.
I could see an argument that Gen 5 didn't need to accurately follow Gen 4's continuity because it's for kids, but uhh.... I can guarantee that a lot of kids have noticed the issues and are confused by them. Especially in the case of Spike's design.

@@TheRavenir I've gotten a similar impression. Even some of the people who like G5 overall don't seem truly passionate about it.
It feels like "My Little Pony" has gone back to being what it used to be; it definitely has a fanbase, but it mostly consists of the core demographic and hardcore legacy fans, and people outside of those groups are aware that the franchise exists, but don't spare it much thought beyond that.

To be fair, those "seasons" are extremely small, consisting either of a single 44-min special or 3 to 8 22-min episodes.

i think because they really just don’t care about the lore at this point lol, they just know alicorns will sell toys because ooohh pony with wings and horn let’s make 50 of them so the kids will buy our toys, g4 did this too but atleast their alicorns made sense 😭
No in one of the first books journal of the two sisters there was a race or kingdom of Alicorns that either went extinct or just all died I can't remember amd that flurry heart is the only known equestrian born alicorn its just by this point the writers forgot that lore was mentioned since the book came out in 2010/2011 that was later corrected and g5 is the first in show mentioned of that kingdom . So they did try to correct it just poorly😭
Maybe this was a me thing but I always read the earth ponies as having magic. It was just that their magic showed less and was more individualized

G5 is a show about what if your main character wasn't the main character. Then you get to see a character trying to progress the plot who lacks the god given ability of main character power.

I agree, the movie is the only G5 content that is clean, the animation is beautiful and it’s worth it that the rest of Make Your Mark
My hopes for Gen 5 went down the drain as the seasons go. I would thought that Gen 5 slowly bridge the friendship with all three ponies along with magic. Heck, I was expecting them to find some pieces of Gen 4 ponies as they explain what happened after Opaline came and when you collect these pieces, it'll lead them to Twilight who would in turn teach them friendship and help the ponies with magic. instead, we got this.
they even found the chest of harmony and are gonna try to find a way to bring twilights castle back or it turns into there own idk

I loved the 4th gen my little pony as a kid and I sometimes revisit the show now even as a 17 year old.
Never watched MLP 5th generation and I asked one of my friends about the show and he told me to not even try watching it because it's that bad.
G5 is harmless if you like cartoons and want something to watch. I daresay I prefer the target demo watch it over a lot of the stuff out there these days...
But if you want something that actually scratches the itch of meaningful, quality cartoon with a fantastical bent and a similar pace, I suggest Hilda.

It’s funny that you say “the show is very heavily made to sell toys” but in reality none of the specials got toys. Only bridlewoodstock got like 3 toys and that was it. There wasn’t anything for the starlight special.
The toys I’m pretty sure are actually doing very poorly, there were g5 equestria girl dolls that leaked more than a year ago and supposedly they were cancelled due to low sales of the ponies.
Also important to note the identity crisis the toys are having. Some have articulation with sculpted hair or rooted hair, or non articulated with sculpted or rooted, or even sculpted hair with rooted tails.. OR 6nch ponies with articulation and rooted hair.
They’re not at all consistent with their toys.
Also to add to the inconsistencies, Minty has had 2 g5 toy releases with her g3 design meanwhile for the show they used g1 minty. Like not at all the same character.

( I think it was a common fannon that Earth ponies always had magic, as kind of an explanations for super strength, ESP and the otherwise least capable being in charge of all agriculture. But it's cool to see it canonised. The only 5 I saw was in Forgalorga's Glimmerverse.)
Ponies in general kinda seemed to get a bonus second talent if they didn't get much Pegasus Flight or Unicorn Magic.
AJ and her Lasso, Pinkie being psychic, Maud being super strong, and even outliers like Fluttershy having weak Pegasus magic, but getting a bonus talent in The Stare.
The real Have Nots were the ponies with weak magic, or who can't conform. (no flight, no cutie marks, etc)
I cant believe out of all the creators that have made videos on this series, only like 2 have even mentioned the dragons having cutie marks, plus theyre only on one side now no matter the creature, like why!?

Gen 4 also have houses and shops like in our world BUT they were also hippogriffs, pirates, sea ponies. It was a mix of a fantasy world and ours, it's a cool concept! I like how it's showed in the movie. It looked fun to explore and the magic was beautiful.
Here, there's phones and internet now... it's just our world but replace every humans with ponies. Wow, that's original ☹I'm not asking to do what Equestria girls did but this franchise really needs a new concept. Maybe the villain can come from our world and wants to fuze ponies with dragons, create an army and rule his city because everyone think's he's crazy? Doing that will proove that the scientist was right and other universes exist?
Honestly I’m fine with the internet but what bothers me the most is the stuff like the terminator and transformers reference. I can believe a civilization building up its own tech but to reference content from our own world just kinda throws me off.
This is literally a bad reboot for kids and to soak up any desperate nostalgia from g4 watchers

It migth be that children entretintment is just...bad nowdays, or the writters strike...or adults having 0 contact with actual chilren to getting to know what they like and blend it with what they need to learn.
My little pony like many children shows has the problem called toy sales. They only care about selling toys to little kids, especially considering Hasbro is in charge, a toy company.
They don't all suck, most of what my little sister watches is decent and actually entertaining.
I don't care that they're not appealing to the older fandom & bronies, but I do care that they created an utterly boring show with nothing interesting about it.
They occasionally reference the previous generation, but they retcon stuff, mess stuff up, and it's also super forced! Meaning kids who have seen the previous generation are also confused and wondering why Spike looks different and all that.
They should've just made a brand new continuity and made their own brand new thing (although-- that's basically what they did outside of the references).
I hope the next generation is better and is actually fun to watch. I grew up watching Gen 4 because it was just a great show overall. If I saw gen 5 at the same age I started watching Gen 4, I probably wouldn't have watched it.
Oh yeah, I like to headcanon that Gen 5 is actually a bad future of Gen 5.
Either sometime within Gen 4, or at least before the finale, there was a change. Opaline came and was unable to be defeated, so Twilight had to hide magic. Alicorns eventually died out because they no longer have magic protecting them or something. Something happens regarding the dragons and magic is used to try to separate the dragon lands from Equestria. Spike's body structure develops differently than in Gen 4 because of the unique circumstances, I guess.
It's stupid and definitely not true, but I like to think Gen 4 finished when it did, and Gen 5 is just a bad ending.
This series gave the ponies incredibly uncanny faces. They always make me think of the monsters from the horror manga Jinmen. They're so terrifying! On the bright side, I have become invested in the gen 1 series My Little Pony Tales. 😻💖 It feels special & have the best-looking horse designs. (Maybe make their ears bigger)
You're hairstyle is straight outta the 80's, which is also ironically were G1 MLP was made.
My biggest problem is just how inconsistent it is in it's own story and characters personalities let alone integrating G4 lore. Also the insane lack of character development or ACTUAL stakes it's just...so insanely disappointing. There is no escapism with the fantasy elements, even though I don't mind when shows have things like phones and SM I wish they included them in a more fantasy-esk way. Like, what if they pushed the environments and lifestyles in completely different directions with how they evolved without magic (ie. Cyberpunk inspired tech heavy for Pegasi, Steampunk for Earth Ponies etc). IDK.... it all kinda went downhill after the movie with Misty being the only real interesting character.

The Allura storyline actually continues in "My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale", which is a sister show that ran concurrently and tied in with "Make Your Mark", but now continues to run and seems to be the main focus.
Episodes are typically around 5 minutes and release right here on CZcams.
IMO, it's a better show.
I really wish they used magic instead of technology, they could have gone the route of magic being an allegory for technology and using it to power screens it would make phones and social media existing in MLP less awkward

And the worst part is this one’s definitely more of a kids show then the last one, I’m 18 and I got a head ache from trying to figure it all out, let alone the target audience for this show whose never gonna watch it how it’s supposed to be.
My issue always was (with the movie especially since its connected to G4) WHERE ARE THE WINDIGOS. We had Hearthswarming eve episodes explaining the need for harmony and friendship between ponies, and they even made a return when the big three were able to cause discourse amongst pegasi, earth, and unicorn. SO WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WINDIGOS??? Tirek himself said that they're ancient magic that can't be destroyed or contained! If this world is supposed to be that ponies were once divided, then how come the windigos didn't appear or have mention????
What I don’t understand is that- you’re telling me, for all those years of separation….THERE WERENT WENDIGOS!? Like- sure, you could argue that magic didn’t work, but how do you explain in the first episode, instead of wendigos, you decide to put a giant gaping black hole in the middle of where everyone is standing.
For g4 it was the windigos were what forced the races to unite, as if they didn't the land would be forever frozen.

Their magic lies mostly with tending the land, it just doesnt manifest in an obvious physical way like pegasai and unicorns.
Also, their was always a risk if the ponies didnt get along and started fighting. The Windigos were there for a reason.

I haven't watched anything MLP related since 5th grade (I'm now finishing high school) so I went into this fully blind. Here are my thoughts just from finishing the video.
1. Seeing it 3D is really weird. It's not like it's bad 3D it's just jarring seeing the drastic change. I definitely prefer the 2D style from FiM more.
2. Though I haven't listened to any of the songs in the new gen it is such a shame that (from what people have said) they're so forgettable. Daniel Ingram's MLP and LPS songs are so memorable and catchy, I can still recall a majority of the tunes now.
3. I've clearly missed SO MUCH LORE because I fully don't remember the crystal thing being in the previous gen. Also the whole taking away cutie marks I thought was a thing that only one pony could do for some reason (I think her name was Starlight Glimmer idk)???
I don't think I'm ever going to come back to the franchise but wow, things have changed a lot! Lowkey, I want to revisit FiM now but I also want to keep it in my childhood lol. Hopefully the new series can find its footing soon.
It was starlight glimmer, she was a magical prodigy which is why she could do that, it could just be a spell only she used cause she was the only person we saw in the show with motivations to do such a thing.

For MLP Generation 5, I just completely forgot that it was a series that was happening. I think what happened was I just lost interest and I felt like taking a break from MLP for a while. I haven’t watched G5 so I don’t really have an opinion on it. All I know is that reviewers and other people have been saying that G5 isn’t great and the story is confusing.
G5's biggest problem is that it's confused and messy. On a larger scale, we're given several threads of a major plot, but they're ignored in favour of random slice-of-life filler episodes - fine when a season is 24 episodes, less so when you only get 6. On a smaller scale, individual episodes often bounce back and forth between two, three, even four completely unrelated side-plots. The main character switches from Sunny to Zipp to Misty. Opaline is never given any important victories, making her come off as incompetent. It has some ties to G4, but doesn't really do anything with them. There's hints of cool stuff in there, it just never gets untangled from the half-baked mess of ideas that were never properly fleshed out.
With g5 I sort of look back and try to think what drew me to g4 when I was the target audience. I don’t think younger me would of really liked the g5 show lol. I feel like it lacks what I’d of wanted the most which was an interesting fleshed out world and some killer villains. Little girls live for the drama and the drama in the show is just kinda bland. g4 had its cheesy moments but I feel it had a lot more going on than g5 does for whatever reason it may be.

earth ponies DID have abilities in gen 4. they often exhibited feats of strength and speed (think pinkie pie, maud pie and applejack). they also had some kind of special connection to nature that allowed them to farm far better than any other type of pony

The thing that hurts me the most about this series, is that this implies Equestria under Twilight's rule fails unlike Celestia's which i'm pretty sure lasted 10x longer, so all the ending of G4 means nothing. (the movie was neat tho)

Slight critique to you saying the last gen (my personal favorite) was just "Friendship for friendship's sake":
While I do agree that there perhaps wasn't nearly enough at stake at first glance, there are a few subtle instances (or moments they conveniently only talk briefly about) where it is shown that Friendship is not only a powerful magic, but is also vital to the survival of Equestria as a whole. The biggest example I can think of are the Windagos.
Yes, everyone in Equestria thinks they're a myth by now, but frankly... I never really believed it was. With everything that has happened in the series, and all the wacky stuff that can be a thing because of magic, I always felt that it was a very subtle ever-present threat hanging over things. An enemy that, unlike every other foe in Equestria, simply bides its time ever so patiently. Waiting for that one day when friendship will fail, and it will be free to freeze over all of Equestria with an eternal winter yet again.
All that being said, it's good to know that g5 tried to give a more immediate and obvious reason for why they cannot afford to be divided as they are. Still prefer G4, tho.

Oh my God... I thought I was the only one who had a problem with the 'queen' not being an alicorn! It frustrates me beyond belief. That, and like you've stated: The social media Hell. The purple pegasus pony in the main group (forgot her name), makes me want to scream in frustration (those dumb/overly obsessed types already makes me exhausted. To see that in a kid's show? Please... No)!

The first episode drew me into the show after the movie, but the baby dragon got so annoying that I never came back to it after "season" 2
I really like the art direction for the overall shape and body style of the ponies but something about them having like humanoid lips is really upsetting to me.. and oh dear lord that dragon is a nightmare LOL i didn't even know there was a SERIES of these characters, i thought the movie was a one off!

Back in my day, if a season had less than 12 episodes it would be considered a mini-series. If it was just one episode it would be considered as a special. If the episode is 50 minutes or longer, It was considered a movie.
