  • Stop grinding and start welding. The flux on those welding rods are bad to the bone. It will float contaminants and mill scale away. Your first pass won’t be as nice as your second pass. But we don’t wild anything with one pass anyway usually.
What should a young welder do coming out of school. Tips and tricks on showing up on your first day. And what is expected from the older more experienced welders.

Mill scale is iron oxide. Also known as rust. No one calls it rust, but that's what it is. Orange rust is also iron oxide. People seem to wrap their head around that. But orange rust and mill scale are both iron oxide AND rust. When steel turn blue or purple or brown, those temper colors as they are called, that is iron oxide too. The black slag left on steel after being torch cut, yes that is iron oxide too. All technically forms of rust. I am an engineer, not a chemist, but I do have some knowledge of metallurgy, and steel oxides are a part of my interest. A point of note, is that rust and mill scale (iron oxides) are ceramics. Yes like coffee cups and flower pots. Iron oxide does not conduct electricity, is non magnetic, and has a different thermal coefficient of expansion than the base steel, and is very brittle. You can use this property to your advantage when you have stuck assemblies that are rusted. You know hitting rusty bolts with a torch breaks up the rust and allows you to loosen them. This is because the steel expands, and the rust does not (relatively speaking), and during the heating process. The rust gets crushed by the expanding steel, and the rust is weak and brittle, so it gets pulverized and crushed. This is why heat from a torch loosens rust bound bolts. Something to note, not all oxide forms of metals have the same properties. For instance, silver is used to plate electrical contacts. The reason for this is, the oxide form of silver has nearly the same electrical conductivity as pure silver. Makes for good switch contacts. Anyhow, I just wanted to give you some more information about mill scale. Yes you are right it comes from the mill rolling process. But to know about mill scale (iron oxide, rust, etc) is such a deep subject, and if you deal with it in your career, knowing more about it is going to be a benefit. I enjoy your videos. ---Doozer

I can vouch for not messing with millscale for general fabrication be it a frame hitch to stretching a truck frame, the only place I was required to prep a plate was in the Navy at high pressure plate welding school I went to, they tested the crap out of our coupons to get certified, four years later I get out and back into the fab/repair business and never removed scale, wasn't needed, now I did sandblast it when a job required a good painted finish like railings and ended up building a sandblasting box (not a booth, an actual box with several nozzles in a box about 60" long and big enough to run a 12" H beam through) that we ran lengths of stock through to prefinish before sawing and welding up the project, was a huge time saver in not having to position a completed job to be blasted, just weld/degrease /paint. But if code requires prepping then" let it be written, let it be done". 😉👍🏻

I was typing the comment and then I stopped because I never posted a comment on your videos before and I didn't want to start out by attempting to correct you. When I was taking welding class they told us to remove the mill scale because it’s not good for our health. When we had topics on tig they would recommend us the same thing but to also prevent porosity. Some of the other guys would use the round tip for the grinder and heavy grind the inside of the pipe. I found that a waste of time I would just give it a quick pass or use a file.
Subscribed to ur channel not to long ago. Great topics your videos helped motivated me to find a job in welding. Can’t wait to find one. Any tips on where to start or how I can get my foot in the door. Also how do you prepare for a pipe test.

Welding over mill scale has no negative health effects. The smoke from the welding process is not good. But adding mill scale to the mix is not going to add to welding being more hazardous. Grinding it and breathing grinding wheel dust, for sure is no good for you. But telling the class mill scale is not good for your health is flat out ignorance. It might not be great for the health of the weld, but that's it. It is not like welding galvanized, which is really bad for your health. --Doozer

If the weld is important remove the millscale just beyond the toes of weld area. Especially with slow freeze rods. Ideally you don't weld through mill scale. Run two 7018 beads on the same metal one on top of mill scale and one on shiny metal. The 7018 on shiny metal always looks better because it is. If you weld pipe or structural those welds are important. Those jobs pay good and you need to be professional and make sure you are welding professionally. There is a certain amount of Flux on those bad boy electrodes and therefore they can only clean a certain amount of contamination from the molten metal and float it to the slag layer. In some cases halfazz removing the mill scale or leaving all of it on is too much contamination and hello porosity and internal defects.
