*I HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT WANTING REWIND BACK FOR YEARS!!!* I am so glad someone big finally said something about it! I found out about them after the 2016 one was released and it was my favorite CZcams thing to look forward to! I hope this starts to have an impact on the community!
If people didn’t dislike both the 2017, 2018 and 2019 Rewinds, then the whole tradition would have continued until the end of time.
I remember being in grade 9 when 2018 rewind released, and then after watching it with like 5 of my friends, we all went. " Well... that was trash..." And then at the count of three we all pressed dislike to live up to the tradition.
I do genuinely miss rewind, though.
What youtube didn't understand when they took away youtube rewind was that we didn't simply hate yt rewind. We loved to hate it, and we did so together

The whole thing of being excited to watch youtube rewind as a community in december is so real tho. It was something I looked forward to so much every year and I have such good memories of it. I loved recognizing all my favorite youtubers like a game of wheres waldo. I miss it a lot but its undortunate that youtube took advantage of youtubers like that

James' words at the end were true, CZcams became a corporate business like Hollywood and would only promote what would give profit, rather than promoting creativity like it originally did when it was still a community of ideas.

I feel like we should get rewinds, but they should be community made. Like, every year each subdivision of the platform, like gaming, animation, food, challenges, etc, they should get together to make a rewind for the previous year. That way we can sort of get quality control, while still having the rewinds representing the community.

No one is stopping anyone from making their own rewinds if they want to. There are two reasons why rewinds stopped and probably wouldnt work as well if they got brought back.
1) all of you man critically panned the Rewinds in the first place which is why they stopped happening. Now youtube got rid of them, youre mad that they stopped.
2) internet culture has stopped being as ubiquitous as it was in 2017. In that era, there were memes and landmark events that had everyone's attention online. Nowadays, the only things that keep everyone's attention are actual world events or news about which creator has been exposed as a r*pist/p*dophile/s*xual harrasser etc. There is nothing that is both benign enough and noteworthy enough to even put in a Rewind.

I completely agree. Good or bad, the CZcams Rewinds were a time where everyone came together as a community to watch their favorite CZcamsrs in one massive collab, and it was just the best feeling when you would ask someone "Hey, did you watch the latest CZcams rewind?" and obviously they would respond with yes, and then you'd talk about all the things you saw and which CZcamsrs you knew from it and which parts you liked or didn't like. I miss them too.

I consume CZcams Videos like a lot!
But I've never seen a complete Rewind, maybe I did watch a few minutes of the one with colbert, but I genuinely don't care about them or most people in them(I assume), so why bother, but happy that people enjoyed them.
And then even I got exposed to the debates and reactions of CZcams Rewinds especially the last one.
Really can't under-estimate the impact of those, essentially corporate propaganda PSAs, and the peoples reaction to it, for many I was probably one of the few ways they could actually express thier dissatisfaction with the path CZcams is/has taken.
But as we see actual Feedback(Good AND Bad) is not something CZcams wants 👎
The swap between nub hands and fully articulated 5 fingered hands is astonishing to me because James still has his style consistently but then shows off his skill with a full set of 5 fingers

The community use to be much smaller, making it easier to capture everyone. Now there are just too many people over 1mil subs, half of which most people probably haven't heard of. It was inevitable that they would eventually have to end it.
and most of them who have the largest sub makes the trashiest low effort content for minors (and child brained adults) on youtube so its not even about whether or not it'll be cringe but a matter of how far
Plus, the idea of virality is spread so thin now.
Honestly, who cares. It could still be done in a way that everyone recognizes at least one creator.

James I completely agree with you. I also really miss CZcams rewinds, because it did bring the entire platform together and was something you could talk about with Everyone! It also made it feel like CZcams still cared about its creators even if it wasn’t a lot, rewind was something they didn’t have to do and they did it anyways. So no matter how bad it is/was, I do miss the community feeling behind it. 💗 But I also agree that if it’s just going to be more “Top 10” video edits, I’d rather have it stay this way. I want the original rewind format back!

In the spanish community, we have never been really acknowledge by CZcams, since it almost only cared about English creators, but ever since the 2018 rewind came out, an incredible spanish CZcamsr called Alec Molon made his own rewind full of CZcams Spanish community things with very little budget, but ever since spanish community noticed this, he made one evey year with a lot of donations as budget and due to he's a normal CZcamsr and not a CZcams official worker, he has a lot of freedom to work as he put memes and references everywhere and the effects amd visuals are just incredible. Even if you don't understand Spanish i recommend you to watch some of his rewinds, he included a lot of world popular things like Among us in 2020 or the attack to the area 51, it'll be worth it.

Yeah, I was devastated when I realized that yt stopped making rewinds. But at least mrbeast made one in 2020.

I think I mainly just miss the comprehensive yearly trend/meme/music recap. As you get older you sort of forget what was going on at the start of a year, lose track of trends, and sometimes even what happened in what year. CZcams rewind did a lot for that.

I think for 2018 Rewind maybe CZcams just wanted to show itself as a family-friendly platform so they skipped over the drama and the controversy but that makes CZcams well... CZcams so Rewind 2018 was less of a fun video and more like a PG-rated trailer for CZcams as a service
CZcams Rewind Indonesia is the closest thing we have to the official CZcams rewinds from 2012-2016. I’d say their rewind for 2020 gave me actual nostalgia even tho I hated 2020 while it happened

I honestly sometimes wonder how a CZcams Remind would work now especially since CZcams is so expensive now with such a variety of creators outside of the old vlog and comedy like videos of the earlier days.
Also, I think part of the reason why 2018 CZcams Rewind was such a flop was because they tried to cram in SO much content and references in such a short period of time. With the way the internet has grown and how trends come and go much quicker now this would be even more of a challenge.
2023 would have been the perfect time for a CZcams Rewind, especially with the song All My Fellas. 2020’s CZcams Rewind would have been about how everyone got through the Covid Pandemic.

In the hispanic community we have been making our own rewinds since 2018, they are made by the community of yutubers itself, and despite the 2023 rewind being a little bit underwhelming, they usualy have a bigger quality and are more in touch with the public.

It's cool to hear your experience with it. I remember only liking the animators in the 2018 rewind and hating everything else. I don't want them back, I don't really care for hate watching stuff even tho I understand you wanting the community to come together again. I just hated youtube rewinds because CZcams is extremely out of touch with its own users and it really shines through with the rewinds.
The animators should do their own rewind. Animate small segments of what happened that year. Each person picks a subject and just rolls with it.

I feel like James' point of everyone watching Rewinds together echoes a Film Theory from a few months ago ("How CZcams BROKE Your Brain") Where MatPat talks about how the landscape of social media has divided and diluted pop culture. Its a very interesting meta analysis that I think goes on the list of Must Watch theory videos
Yeah in hindsight he was talking about when CZcams screwed up Rewind 2018. I still remember that dreadful day and it just made creators question themselves a lot. Which may explain why Modern CZcams hasn't really captured the same charm as it once did. Nowadays it just feels like creators are trying way too hard to be funny or trying to cause drama just to get more attention.

It truly is a humorous piece of irony that animators worked hard to get on board with the CZcams rewind and the audience's take was to rip it to shreds it is funny looking at the animator's take on the audience's take to it
Anyone not familiar and didn’t know better would have thought that they would’ve been paid *well* for that animation (💰, swanky high-rise glass hotel rooms, sizable authority over the final video is *obviously* a given, and fancy outings like yacht parties and golf, with catering all throughout (fancy food with fancy waters and alcohols provided), with party prizes like iPads and laptops, with a small solid golden play button at the end as a gift, like they were *IN* with the CZcams Executives), which I’m *certain* encapsulates a lot of people, and way more than you’d think. (Cause I feel a DEEP urge to believe that too, even though I know that’s not the case)
I mean, he was working with CZcams, one of the largest video and entertainment companies in the world!

I whole heartedky agree with the rewind, but in order for that to happen, we'd need to at least bring up the previous years of rewind and finally get some justice to those that did not show up.

I always watched right to the end and loved the surprise of the animators near the end.

They should Bring YT Rewind Back.
Let creators create with loose guidelines or provide multiple scripts that the creators can choose from. Agree a payment for everyone involved. Don't mention anything unsafe. Remember to plan for the animators inclusions. Would be perfection.
honestly, the other day i was thinking about rewind and how it should come back.
The best thing about this kind of event is that it could bring together many members of the platform. Since Rewind was cancelled, there hasn't been a lot of unity with CZcams and its content creators (videos get taken down, not getting enough income, ridiculous amount of ads, dislikes getting removed etc.). We need a point where all CZcamsrs can get together and reminisce about the great things we've acheived instead of complaining or arguing.

I think the CZcams Rewinds of 2012 through 2015 perfectly captured how CZcams was its own thing, it's own talent pool separate from traditional media, and its own community like you said it felt like. Defo really miss that aspect to it.
I remember people complaining after 2017's rewind, especially the UK CZcams community bc those slime fights took a whole day to film in the freezing cold, everyone got stained by the slime and so many CZcamsrs barely even got screentime. I still agree with the suggestion Emma Blackery made after 2017 Rewind aired. Make regional rewinds! Make a Rewind US, make a Rewind UK, make a Rewind Europe, etc. It would give people airtime and not make anyone feel less important

Here in indonesia our youtubers have been making their own version of rewind every year called "rewind indonesia." Organized by the comunity, for the comunity
