It always makes me cry. I picked up on the red dress hints fast too. The nursing home they lived in at the end was the house that Noah fixed up.
The "What do You Want" part was an ad lib by Gosling and not in the script. Watch speeches for the Kirk Douglas Award that Gosling got this year, with Steve Carrel, Greta Gerwig and Gosling because in Greta's speech she talks about him turn compliments around to the person giving them. She names off all the things he can do and adds and if that isn't enough he has really great handwriting.
I love the old songs that add to the magic of the love story!
Next up: Blue Valentine (2010). It's the perfect follow-up.
Such a lovely wonderful story of true love, bookended with the heartbreak of dementia. My aunt and uncle are going through something similar, and this movie just wrecks me every time I watch it.
Thanks for reacting. ❤️
The director picked Gosling because he wasn't handsome. The description in the book sounds like the writer is describing Gosling. In the book Lon is handsome and rich, but is 8 years older than Allie and a work-a-ho-lic. Also, the books starts in 1932 when she is 15 and he is 17. When she leaves he goes to New Jersey and works and helps build a business for an elderly man who leaves him $70,000. He does hire people to help with the house.
You might enjoy two other Gena Rowlands films: The Skeleton Key (2005) and the made for TV movie Stranger from 1979 with her idol Bette Davis. Nick Cassavetes, the director of The Notebook, is her son with the director John Cassavetes to whom she was married for 35 years and who directed her in a number of films. She is still with us at age93, but is retired.
The plot is vaguely similar to the situation of recently deceased US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and her husband. He suffered from dementia and eventually forgot they were married. He fell in love with another resident in the nursing home - Sandra said she couldn't be upset or angry about it because it wasn't his fault he didn't remember her.
I’ve only seen her in Faces and A Woman Under The Influence (my favorite).
Bro, I lost it when you said “the devil came to her front doorstep.” 😂😂
It is loosely based on the mother and father-in-law of the writer. During filming they did not like each other at all. He even tried to have her replaced. They are just good actors.
I am 78 and my first Ryan Gosling movie was Barbie, but now I have seen all of them. I love this movie, but I have difficulty with the older part because my husband is 74 and we have been married for 48 years. Some reviewers want to put this movie in the standards for the 2000s, instead of leaving them in the 1940s and I hate it.
19:24 the most epic part of the movie, solid line delivery
@RolyPolyOllie Reactions --- You're ready for "Cocoon".
I also recommend A Woman Under the Influence, Lonely are the Brave, Gloria, The Americanization of Emily, The Great Escape, Murphy’s Romance, Support Your Local Sheriff and Maverick.
Gena Rowlands was Allie!
Joan Allen played Allie's mom
Great movie. Great reaction.
Let me say this..I am a huge Nicholas Sparks fan. I read the Notebook..
**Spoiler**
Hollywood killed both at the end of the movie however Nicholas only killed off Allie in the book. Noah continues in the next book The Wedding...a very romantic story...read it.
Thanks, Oliver! Thanks, Huxley! ❤🩹 Cheers to director Nick Cassavetes.
Fantastic reaction:
Just an important correction:
"Allie" was played by the great actress Gena Rowlands, nominated for two Academy Awards for best actress and receiving a Honorary Academy Award in 2015 in recognition of her unique screen performances.
"The Notebook" was directed by her son Nick Cassavetes (and son of famed director John Cassavetes).
Joan Allen played the mother of young "Allie".
James Garner (old Noah) was a huge star in the 1960's with his TV Western series "Maverick".
