And not only that, but how he's gone from a smiling, happy ten-year-old to the cold and hollow teenager he is today, because of all the pain he endured?

Well, depends on how you look at it. I was happy with the ending of season 1, and I think its "happy", but then season 2 came along and I think it's ending is "sad", but its hard to say. The 'bad' guy dies, but so does the 'good' guy. But the 'good' guy didn't really want to keep on living... its hard to say. Its very philosophical. And honestly, I don't thing there even IS a good/bad guy in it. But there are guaranteed heart-retching moments in the show, along with moments that make you smile.
I love both of the seasons, but season 1's ending is MUCH better. No cliffhanger or anything. I was consent with it, but then season 2 came out and fudge'd everything up with illogical stuff and even MORE insanity then before, along with the biggest cliffhanger sense Fullmetal Alchemist! ._.
