    What a buzz! Was a rookie Traffic Cop in 1978 and worked the inner city as all newbies did. Remember these scenes well and the drivers re attaching connectors when parted from the overheads. The sparks that flew, and sometimes dropped to the road when overhead junctions were crossed- couldn't be ignored either. Thanks for the post.

    Some great scenes of my home town trolley bus system. You saw it in the twilight years with only three routes in operation. It had once been NZ's largest trolley bus system with 13 or so routes and a fleet of 133 British built trolley buses. Thanks heaps for sharing. Did you take any movie footage while here?

Sorry, I didn't take any movie footage. I used an 8mm movie camera in the 60s (but not in Auckland), but was never satisfied with the results compared to 35mm, so stuck with slides. Of course, nowadays you can do movies and stills with one camera at the same time. Regards, tassiebaz.

    Does anybody know why they used trolley buses instead of regular buses?
    (Not meaning to sound smarmy, genuinely curious! 🙂)

    • @tassiebaz
      @tassiebaz  Před rokem +2

      Hi George, Thanks for watching and for your thoughtful question. At the time many cities implemented trolleybus operations, (1940s-1950s) (First operation in Auckland was in 1938), they replaced trams, in many cases because of the high cost of maintaining tram systems. Trolley buses were chosen because of the following considerations, although I'm not sure exactly which of these applied specifically to Auckland. Auckland is somewhat hilly.
      Better hill climbing - Trolleybuses are better than motorbuses on hilly routes. Given their acceleration and braking performance, trolleybuses can outperform diesel buses on flat stretches as well, which makes them better for routes that have frequent stops.
      Environmentally friendly - Trolleybuses are usually more environmentally friendly
      Minimal noise pollution - Trolleybuses are almost silent, lacking the noise of a combustion engine.
      Longevity and maintenance - Electric motors typically last longer than internal combustion motors, and cause less secondary damage from vibration, so electric buses tend to be very long-lived compared to motorbuses.
      Much of the infrastructure needed was already in place for tram lines, e.g., substations, line poles, and sometimes only an extra wire was needed to be strung.
      With new bus technology, and analysis may result in different outcomes today, although many cities in the world still operate trolleybuses and have recently ordered and received brand new ones with some off-wire capability.
      Hope this helps. All the best for 2023. Cheers, tassiebaz.

      Wonder why they stopped

    • @tassiebaz
      @tassiebaz  Před rokem +2

      @@Jotch-lah Hi, in many cases it was simply poor decisions by incompetent management, mislead by bus interests (buses, tyres, diesel, etc.) and/or poor information. In other places, it was a desire for increased flexibility and/or extending lines to meet new demands.
      Wellington, NZ recently dismantled their entire trolleybus operation (I've got video on CZcams) in favour of unproven hybrid bus technology because of reported millions needed to fix dilapidated overhead wires. While I'm not a professional, I visited there in 2016 and it didn't look that way to me. Philadelphia recently abandoned two trolleybus lines in favour of electric battery buses which failed miserably. Too bad, the wires were all ripped down. On the other hand, San Francisco, Seattle, and Vancouver have recently invested in new trolleybuses and all three have large trolleybus systems. Places like Beijing and Shanghai (I've got video on CZcams) have long stretches of off-wire operation, then the vehicles automatically rewire and happily run on electric power from the overhead. Hope this helps. Cheers, tassiebaz.
