Climate Change Is Making This Alaskan Town Fall Into The Ocean (HBO)

  • For decades, a small village in Alaska has been disintegrating and falling into the surrounding river. And for decades, the village’s residents, most of them native Alaskans, have been asking state and federal agencies for the help and funding they need to relocate the entire community. So far, the money they’ve gathered falls far short of the estimated $130 million they’ll ultimately need to make that happen. Now, the village is running out of time.
    Since it was founded in the 1950s, the village of Newtok has lost nearly a mile of coastline. The reason for that isn’t under dispute: climate change has caused the permafrost under the village to melt, allowing the surrounding water to eat away at the shore. Because of this, it’s not uncommon to see large chunks of land crumble and fall into the water during a storm. According to the Army Corps of Engineers, entire buildings along the shore could begin to fall into the water within the year. At the moment,there’s just 40 feet of land standing between the first house and disaster.
    VICE News visited Newtok and spoke with residents who might soon lose their homes. In Newtok, VICE witnessed the loss of 10 feet of land - in just four days.

    For $40 Million you have the option of building 125 $300,000 homes (one for 4 people) OR move the whole village to a new development in Anchorage and have enough left over to buy each and every home a Jeep. Similarly, in Alaska, being as it's so far away (just Google how expensive a normal grocery list would be in Alaska) investing $300,000 on new construction would not do you all that much relatively.

      Not that high, average house prices are 261k in AL. Housing here in CO is on average 535k. So no, it's not that high. For these 315 people, it would cost 16-19 million just for houses (63 households in the village), infrastructure would most likely cost about 30-35 million, since paving a road only costs about 1 million (already under construction). And were still seeing a difference of 106 million dollars.... Where would that go? Obviously there are too many remaining factors to justify distributing 160 million dollars to a village of only 354+ people....

    Newtok is on the shore of a river, not the ocean. This has NOTHING to do with seal level. The town is on the "cut bank" of river that is meandering as it always has - a natural process. Tough luck that they built on unstable ground.

  • @featherman9
    @featherman9 Před 6 lety +15

    I am interested to know why it costs 130 million dollars to move/build homes for 400 people homes? Assuming that 2-4 people live in these houses it would mean that they are spending about 1 million dollars per house? And those houses do not look like they would cost anywhere near 1million dollars even when factoring in infrastructure, unless they are planning on using this opportunity to build the new town with a completely new/upgraded infrastructure system. Which I think is a great idea, but if they are struggling to keep their homes out of the water I would think just moving the village would be a higher priority then making sure the new village is above and beyond the old one.

    • @Dani-dp3nl
      @Dani-dp3nl Před 6 lety +6

      Levi They need roads, water treatment/sewage, post office, homes their location doesn't help as most things have to be shipped

    • @featherman9
      @featherman9 Před 6 lety +3

      I understand that, but that still would not justify a million dollars per house. I have built some houses out in the country where they need to set up all of those things and they only built 2 houses (so all of the expenses only get divided by 2 houses) and they spent about $800,000ish per house but they were building 6-8 bedroom houses with a 5 car garages and lots of luxury finishings.
      even if you add 40-50% or if you are increase in price due to shipping/ distance that still seems like a very high estimate especially because the houses they are building are very simple small houses.
      You can tell from the aerial shots that they do not have a sewage system, and I doubt they have a complex water treatment system either because they specifically mentioned only the school has running water. A post office is literally just one more building/structure if you have ever been to really small towns you will notice that most of their post offices are tiny little sheds and the delivery guy is some dude in his car and if he's lucky hes got a USPS sticker/magnet slapped on the side of the car. As for roads they are actually quite simple and not that expensive to build because they do not have to worry about surrounding infrastructure like existing cables, pipes etc. and they also do not need to have to do the construction over many years in phases due to disrupting traffic thats one of the major factors that makes road building such a long and expensive process. Plus these roads are only meant to have 400-500 people driving on them so they do not need to be 6 lane roads, most likely they will be 2-3 lanes.
      I don't think it would cost them $100,000 per house but if I had to guestimate I would guess that it could/should cost them about $500,000 per house and that would also include them getting a pretty decent upgrade from their current living situations.

      There is coastal erosion everywhere and not only in remote places. Places like York Beach, Maine and Plymouth, MA have serious erosion issues. People move. Government helps. The money that has been given to these people should have been used differently. Massachusetts and Maine can take care of their own and people use the funds to figure out a different way. Alaska is vast and wild and barren. The downside to that is Alaskan life. When big things happen, big changes need to be made. You can try to make this a race or political issue, but sometimes it's just logistics.

    Wait 150 million dollars to relocate a two hundred people? 500k per person seems high? Right?

  • @thequeensthief5593
    @thequeensthief5593 Před 2 lety

    This is sad to see, but economically I think you just move them to a city, ~400 people and they have received 40 million, that would be enough to give each of them 100k, which is more than enough to survive in an Alaskan city for several years. If they integrated into those cities then that seems a good solution. Relocating villages does not seem a good long term economic strategy. It will never stop and the number of villages and whole cities (Especially the high density cities in Florida and Texas), would just not be realistic to relocate.

    People should rely a litle less on the State and realize that THEY need to take care of their village

  • @TheRamsfanstl
    @TheRamsfanstl Před 6 lety

    IF the Govt gets involved and fronts the money to build this new village they will have to do the same thing around our entire country as every single town/city in every single coastal state is eroded. Its just not going to happen. This is the reality of things. These coastal towns all around the country will have move inland and lose their identity. Sad, but true.

    Why should the government spend millions on a few hundred people ?
    Why should people pay tax if they are not getting taken cared of ? If they don't pay their taxes, those people probably have saved enough money over the years to relocate themselves.

  • @nayinayi1

    Why it cost so much to rebuild? Why $40 million only finished 4 to 5 houses? I know there is a need for funding, but maybe that is what should be looked into! People are going to die! With that money you should have way more houses than that? These are not mansions? They are tiny house which the most should cost about $80 000!!! Builders shouldn't even be looking for ridiculous amount of profits! This is crazy - these are your citizens? Stop trying to get super rich over their pain!
    Americans for real - there was also a case where a hurricane had hit FL and those who were trying to get water after the hurricane - some counties were charging about $20.00 per bottle! It's like how do you make make profit in times like that? That's evil! I understand if you want to get back the money used to buy the product and labor - but to actually make 150% profit during natural disasters is evil!

    Why not build a metal framework under the buildings and haul the old buildings to a new location? 0 thought here, just mindless spending. Bet they spent millions on that heavy equipment to move a little dirt, could have moved half the town for what those rock trucks and payloaders cost.

    Sadly I think for now anyway. The only times people will be helped from climate change problems like this is when its cheaper to aid them than it is to lose them.
    For example, if it costs $1b to protect a town from climate change. And it costs $2b to lose the town. They will pick the cheaper option.

For it to function, why should Alaskan peoples get money to build a village in the middle of no where, that only helps 400 people they gotta think big picture
