The bull needs a ring. They are much easier to work with. A short 18" chain hanging from it makes them easier to catch when out with the cows. The chain forces them to walk with their head elevated, it's not to say they won't charge if provoked but the head up makes them slightly safer to deal with. They can be led by the ring.
They get the job done. While extra vigilance is required they are not difficult to work with. In a calm environment that the cows need they soon also become a bit calm also. If they continue aggresive......off to the lunch meat department.
Wire a knife switch into the plug going to the silo unloaded motor, you can shut it down while inside the silo. Also in a set up where there are multiple silos it's an added safety feature that prevents accidents.

A dairy I used to work for used ABS for all their breeding. They came and basically graded all the cows for positive and negative attributes and matched the cows with whatever bulls had the genes to combat the negatives. They(ABS) walk the freestalls every day to chalk tails and identify cows in heat and breed. While it does come at a fairly significant cost, it is a whole aspect of cow health that you don't have to think about as much. Once everything got going they were maintaining an extremely good percentage of bred cows in the herd at any given time. I want to say it was 33% or better, and at times was as high 50%. The biggest bonus of all was to not have any ornery bulls to deal with. The farm is in NW Vermont and was featured in Hoard's Dairyman and got awards for breeding excellence also.

Artificial breeding is talent, I learned after about 3 years of calling a technician. Went to an ABS breeder school. for 4 days I think. I really enjoyed the skill level it took and pride I felt when a cow was pregnant and that calf dropped.

Thanks for another great video Kip. It was interesting.
You all are doing good with corn harvest and the combine. Lots of farmers dealing with muddy conditions. Hard on equipment and operators. Looks like you are doing good in the muddy fields.
17 percent corn is not bad. Good going.
You were talking about your bulls and switching to artificial injection to become pregnant. I know a fair amount on that. I needed to make some extra money so started helping a vet do the work. He sent me to ABS’s school to learn how to do it. Got certified and did injections for years. Because of my age now about eight years ago gave up my certification. Kip I believe you would do well with it. I found it not that bad to do once I established my routine and all that. Think you would do well with it Kip.
I would not trust those bulls. They can be dangerous in a quick second.
Your silo unloaded looked good that you redid. Nice going on that.
Glad you were able to attend the meeting on dairy updates and all that. Good way to see what others are going and new ideas and such.
Thanks for everything Kip. You all take care and be safe.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Enjoy the holiday. Blessings to all of you.

As long as your soil tests don't indicate that your soil isn't deficient in micro nutrients, your manure should provide enough micros to supply the plants. That's what gives us livestock farmers an edge over the strictly crop farmers.

We made the transition from bull breeding to AI seven years ago. There is a learning curve to it but once you get going you get some really nice heifers coming in. Biggest thing is to buy the best bulls you can not just what’s cheap. I’d also recommend going the sexed and beef route. Those crossbred calves are way better feeders than a Holstein could ever dream of being and people are willing to pay for that.

That red bull looks just like the dry beans I grew this year "Jacobs Cattle' (named after the biblical story) and looks just like a handful of cows. There is also a "holstein bean" that is black and white plus a "holstein cow pea' Track down some seeds for the garden to entertain the kids, they can start their own farm/ranch, and learn a story along the way. The Jacobs Cattle grew well here in SE Michigan so you should have no trouble with them.

I'm not sure about the red bull. He has a look in his eye that made me uncomfortable. If you start AI, and I think you have enough folks there to make it work, you'll gain a lot of control over your genetics and quite frankly you get a closer relationship with your cows. never trust a bull. Back in 1990 our bull turned on us. It about killed my dad. I seen it happen. He threw my dad about ten feet in the air and when my dad came down his face hit the top of the bulls head. We were lucky that when i yelled the bull took off to the other end of the pen. My brother and me didn't want to move him because we didn't want to cause our dad any more damage but we didn't have any other option because the bull could have came back. My dad had to be medivaced out. No one wa willing to try and load the bull. Our neighbor came over with a 30 30 to shoot the bull. They tried to get him to come to the fence but he wouldn't. they asked me to come down to the barn and see if i could get him to come to the fence. As soon as that bull seen me he started to trout to the fence. The neighbor put one round right between the bulls eyes and he stood there for about 15 seconds before he dropped.
