Surstromming eaten by American for first time

- An American eating Surstromming for the first time. I had it shipped in from Sweden as you can not buy it here in the states.
Surstromming is a delicacy unique to Sweden where herring is fermented in a brine for several months and then canned. Best served with beer, boiled potatoes, onions, sour cream, butter (your choice) on flat bread.
It is widely considered one of the smelliest foods in the world. I thought it was pretty good. :)
Husband sprays wife with rotten fish juice, then leisurely enjoys eating and reviewing his Surstromming sandwich. Wife continues to video, covered in the putrid slime, trying to hold herself together, all the while gasping from the stench and suppressing her gag reflex. _This is true love!_
One reason why they open in under water ...
I also had this impression. Damn good job!
5 year old comment made me crack up from laughing nice
He knew.... he definitely knew. Come in close dear... closer....closer..... POP! If he watched the correct videos he'd have opened it in a bucket of water.
Yeah she deserves a medal to endure that smell. Usually it winds up being a complete puke fest. I knew,( from watching other videos) that was probably not a great idea to be near when he opened it .
this is a lucky man for having such a wife, you can hear her gasping for clean air but she powers through
used to being squirted on
Right! 😂😂
Bless her lol
I guess she has some experience with him spraying her with liquidy substances without much warning, so she's used to it.
I think she might've been at gunpoint
This is the first person (besides actual Swedish who eat this regularly) that I’ve seen not be affected by the smell or taste. Like just a juggernaut of a human taking this on like it’s another day.
This man is a legend!
something is wrong with his olfactorys, there is no other explaination... 🤣
He is doing it purely to make his wife suffer🤣
They do not eat it nearly as often as they want us to think lol
@@cameronspence4977 "Come closer you gotta hear it" he totally knew what he was doing 😆
He took it like a champ 💪🏻 but his casual demeanor while wife suffers is epic lol
Did they say covid can kill your taste buds and sense of smell..... WE FOUND PATIENT ZERO! 🤣
@@republicofcasuals This was filmed 4+ years before COVID appeared. I think he's just disabled in the nose department, hence his penchant for kippers and the like. He already had a headstart on tolerating this stuff. The fact that he likened the smell/taste on the back of the throat to a seasoned possum roadkill is all we need to know though.
People need to take a lesson from this man. This is what open-mindedness and respect look like!
Yes. You need to put all things into your mouth, less you be labeled "close minded." I took a lesson from his wife, as she gaged while filming.
Chance Cooper Not really a challenge though. Anybody can eat it like this.
also this legend of a man is probably used to going down on his wife, he's used to that sexy stink
Respect or not, If the stuff taste horrid people should be allowed to spit it out plain an simple ,really has nothing to do with respect, it's just common sense.
Respect ? I had it last time I was in Sweden the smell alone made me gag. After pouring the can in the ocean and going back to my camp site I could still smell the stuff from 30 meters away. There is a reason why its an item thats banned by several airlines from taking it on a plane even as stowed luggage.
What is this sorcery? A non-Swede eating surströmming the way it's supposed to be eaten? Between seeing people trying to chew down unrinsed whole surströmming without condiments and people trying obviously spoiled cans where the fish has completely liquified, this was indeed refreshing. Thumbs up for doing the research and taking the smell like a boss (really impressive for a newbie). It usually takes experience to dissociate the smell from what I suspect is a primal "this smell means I will get sick or die if I eat it"-reaction, and some people can't ever do it. Of course it also helps if you like fish and very salty food. Fillets are considered a "lesser" form of surströmming by many enthusiasts, but if you ask me I can do without the rinsing and deboning and go directly to the eating :)
The surströmming in this video is fillet so no real need to rinse it. "Original" surströmming is just the whole fish with head, guts etc so rinsing is often prefered.
I'm still alive and had no ill effects :)
its almost the same with insects from baby foots on u were told that insects are nasty things that doesnt belong in your stomach.were were conditioned to avoid eating insects.in Vietnam for Example they eat insects like we are snacking chips while watching football or else.this could reduce the worlds hunger almost completly.but no because they are nasty xD
@@Dopedruide As a Vietnamese, I have serious reservations about your assertion that we eat insects as chips, Mr. American.
@@jamesd6966 so vietnamese dont eat bambooworms&coconutworms and fried scorpions? if not then i apologize and btw i am not Mr.American i am from Germany but never mind^^
I appreciate the wife doing the "I'm breathing through my mouth so i dont puke" sound
Props for eating it the correct way.
I enjoyed eating it immensely.
Its not correct
@@ukmedicfrcs It is !
@@AdrianoCROST It's not. You have your opinion and I have mine.
No no it's not correct, you slice the fish into small pieces and take away the bones if you eat it correctly, not the whole fish...
FINALLY a video with an american that eat Surströmming the correct way!! Many thumbs up!
I´m swedish (from northen Sweden) and I have been eating Suströmming since I was 11 years old :-)
as a swedish, i must say you prepared well, well done ^_^
Jeremy Jolivet these dont always have bones, and eating the skin is common
Jeremy Jolivet yeah makes since, well... i think theres a few versions of surströmming, theres with and whiteout bones i'd imagine, you should watch a video of swedish people eating this, theres quite a few, some remove the skin, some dont :)
He's eating a can of surströmming filets, so there are no bones or intestines in this can. Removing the skin is optional, some people like it, some don't.
Yeah, but it wasn't nearly as entertaining to watch as, say, Ted Barrus' video where he did it. Now that shit was HILARIOUS. I busted a gut laughing at it.
bones are relatively soft
As a swede, you took that bitch like a man, kudos and good job. Also for eating it the correct way!
You know what your eating sucks, when someone has to say, “You took that bitch like a man!” Think about it. 👉🏻🧠
@@nigel900 haha
man this is the first time somebody makes it look delicious.
because it is not so bad all the other people are just dumb
This guy is a hero. Didn't flinch or puke at all... a real man.
True Swede potential
Now if he eats this when it's pooped out... he's a Superhero. Assuming he ferments it first.
Maybe this guy could make swedistan Sweden again
kostar500 oh yes,agreed, definitely he's hero ))
you want a hero?!? listen to that guy's wife NOT puke on his little card table!!!
"... like if you got really close up to a dead possum or something like that..." **takes another big bite
As a Swede. I think you're hell of a strong man for open AND eating it. Have seen other clips with Americans that throws up just open it 😂 way to go. I salute you 🙋🏼♀️
Finally! someone outside Sweden that does this as IT SHOULD be done - with bread, potato and so on. Perfect!
Surströmming really smells completely different compared to how it tastes. (Yes, i'm from Sweden)
You handled it like a man.
or like a woman
Are you Swedish?
+sanctiX Woman cry, complain, whine way more as it is in their nature so he definitely didn't handle himself like woman.
You haven't met my mother
Cheating with bread and stuff. Try it alone the first time
Dad is having a picnic while mom is fighting for air. 😂
I'm just impressed with this! First time I've ever seen a non Swede eat this properly! 👏👏👏Länge leve surströmmingen !
"It is definitely pretty fragrant". Understatement of the year.
Good on you for putting up the best attempt at eating Surströmming the correct way! In my family we do not eat it with sourcream, but it is very common to do so. A good ingredient to balance out the saltiness of the fish is tomatoes.
I love how he said “it’s like a dead possum, like ya got right up on it.” And then took a big ass bite 😂 🤢 😷 😅
Casually chatting about the taste of roadkill whilst eating fermented fish and goes back for more, huge W
I saw this Swedish guy teaching the internet how to eat it properly, and he opened the can in a bucket of water because it's not the fish that's extremely smelly, it's whatever liquid it's covered in you want to get rid off.
Surströmming isn't illegal in the US, unless you try to bring it with you on a plane (because the can could explode)
Next time open it in a bucket of water or under a towel :)
That's for pussies. Only manly men open it with no protection.
Knacka burken i något för att lätta på trycket så det inte sprutar.
Yeah agree. Why to make mess-jobafter on the table.
it can't really explode, that's a myth that airlines didn't realize was a myth
Or don't it that crap at all. I'm Swedish and I wouldn't touch that with a 20ft pole.
You can hear that she just cant stand the smells haha. She is almost shivering
Tryin to figure out if he is legit trying to get her to yak. Like they got a bet goin.
these are gutted fish, called filé in Swedish. i prefer the ones with guts. it got a more rich taste and some times you get surströming caviar in them. it is about the tastiest thing i know.
i ate it in Sweden with Swedish people it tastes better than it smells like a strong cheese.I'm American too.
I'm Swedish and I like surströmming..When it is unopened and is in a store far far FAR away from me ^^
i am not Swedish and i like you, when you are in Sweden far far far away from me
cool story.
According to rumors, the research on long-time storage of nuclear fuel is actually a cover-up for how to dispose of surströmming in case no norrlänning is there to eat it. Salt is pretty corrosive, and that's currently the main concern. It would be pretty horrible if the surströmming started to leak into the local water supply...
If surströmming started to leak into the water supply, water might actually start to taste good!
Actormofujohn håller med.
I've never tried Surströmming myself, however, I have watched plenty of videos of the Swedish eating it the right way.
I would love to try this sometime and may I say kudos to you for being a sport ,AND to your wife, who is clearly dying lol, for embracing the experience with you.
I have heard that even the Swedish know it smells really overwhelming.
This is how we embrace culture. Trying it!
Thank you for this upload!
I can't believe that he compared it to a dead opossum and then continues to eat it. Amazing!
A true viking. 💪 It really smells horrible. I will never eat it.
As a swede, eating this dish on occasions, and loving it i have to say this:
Dude, are you from the northen sweden without knowing it? You realised that the smell is strong and very different from anything else, but its not THAT bad. You prepared it the right way on the sandwich, you ate it and realized its pretty much just a VERY salty fish. And as you said yourself, this is pretty good and it sure is! its nothing you eat like on a weekly or even monthly basis, its mostly consumed on the surströmmingspremier, when that seasons fish is ready to go to the stores, you gather family and friends and eat it and have like a party doing this, this happens in the autumn and im proud to enjoy those moments with my family and friends, but indeed, its a VERY special dish! its one of those either you hate it or love it things of the world
But big thumbs up for you doing this the correct way! It would be cool to have you at one of the surströmmingsparties!
I am Norwegian and I sometimes buy a can of Surstrømming when I visit Sweden. It's good to eat maybe 1 or 2 times every year, not more. And you need beer and aquavite (or vodka) to drink when you eat, that's important.
Lovely go see an American actually doing the research and eat it the way it's meant to be eaten! :D
After seeing the rest of the video; Almost the way it's meant to.
You should rinse it off first. And not eat entire fillets of it. You cut it up into smaller pieces, and dice the potato (or mash it). Entire, unrinsed fillets, I imagine, tastes nothing but brine
There's nothing saying you have to rinse it first. As a Swede, I never met another Swede that has done that. Also, the size of your chunks is of course totally up to you.
Jerri Kangasniemi seems like you're just getting into personal preference. What difference does it make if it's whole fillets or in pieces?
You should know that rinse means skölja and not rensa.
Thank you for doing it the correct way and not mocking it by just trying to eat it as it is. You have my respect! //Swede
That’s the right way to eat surstromming, the smell is a thing that you can control, my respect to this man that showed us that food is food and do it the right way makes a good change. Great video! Thanks!
Nice to see you doing it the right way giving it a fair go :D What could also be done for beginners is to take a bucket of water and open the container dipped under water. Helps a lot with the smell and also rinses the surströmming a bit before you eat it.
Wow, finally someone eating this with correct things. Props to you!
He eats the correct way as it should be. Great man. I like that.
You CAN buy surströmming in the United States. You just have to be in the right part of the U.S. Come to Northern MN sometime and you can buy some while here as well as have Lutefisk if you come around the right season! 😃
legend:-)i absolutely adore fish smell ,saltiness and everything,im buying this(if i can get it)
A real viking. Maybe your old relatives are swedish. Great video. Greetings from Sweden.
I think this might be my favorite video on the internet. God bless his wife.
O meu favorito é este: czcams.com/video/cz0fIP4REO0/video.html
This is the first person I've actually seen successfully eat this. Usually all that happens is a vomit fest. He actually fixes it the way its intended, which is a first for me to see also.
Yup another swede here, love your approach on this: An open mind, knows what your doing. a tip for next time, due to the Soft texture of the Surströmming it´s really nice to have something crunchy like crispy toast or a Crispbread... Cudos
How did your neighbors react to the smell? I'm a bit curious, since I remember reading in a newspaper some years ago about a man who had recently come to Sweden from the Middle East. He hadn't been here that long, so he didn't fully know Swedish culture and cuisine. One time when he came home to his apartment building, he felt this smell as he walked up the stairs, and he was convinced somebody had died so he called the police.
When the officers arrived, the could simply state that someone somewhere in the building was having a surströmming party and that nobody had died. The poor guy must've started to wonder what crazy country he had come to, haha.
Myself, I can eat surströmming if I have to. It's not that I think it tastes bad, I just get annoyed with all those flies all over the place.
From a Swedish guy, this gives respect! Good work :)
First American that i found on youtube that eat Surströmming the right way.
I want to eat some now
American viking!
Thumbs up!!! Your are a real Swede now. NZ comedian Al Pitcher tried it out on a show hosted in Sweden, he just couldn't take it, but he, as opposed to you, did it totally wrong. Bread, sour cream, potatoes, red onion are the way to do it. And, a bottle of milk (or beer). Good job, august is closing in and traditionally this eaten in august, so its time again!
"Like if you got really up close to a dead opossum or something like that..."
Takes another bite.
Underbart att se ! Äntligen!!
Thats how its done!
I hated it when i was a kid but now i love it
I loved playing with rotten fish when I was a kid. Now I hate it.
Big thumbs up for being the first one om the tube actually trying to eat it like it's supposed to. A bit of aquavit and your all set! 👌
Okay, eating THAT while talking about the smell of rotting opossum on the side of the road... wow. Major kudos, haven't seen anyone take it down like that. AND you're eating it the proper way. Congrats, you have officially impressed me.
Funny how the wife tries not to breathe through the nose in the background :D
Thank you for eating it the correct way!
My dog did diarrhea on the carpet the other week and I had to get the 3M respirator out to be able to deal with cleaning it up. Would you say this is better or worse?
Salutes to you from sweden!
This guy definitely ate it the right way, but the fun is in the reactions by people eating it the wrong way.
Ah! O melhor de todos que considero é este: czcams.com/video/cz0fIP4REO0/video.html
I think some of the liquid sprayed onto the bread you removed from the packet. And it looked like you ate that's same flatbread. You are brave.
This guy is a boss, but more props to his wife who held her camera steady the entire time while fighting the urge to puke.
That is very impressive! Respect from Sweden.

Like a boss!
only thing missing in this was a beer, need alcohol to survive this. xD
Mikies ikr
The calm and collected manner in which you carried out this putrid ritual made me LOL
Love the video! Thank you for treating this very particular food with respect, curiousity and a positive approach. ❤
You're the calmest guy I've seen eating surströmming. Even swedes puke at this.
Maybe you do, but I don't. I love it
You're supposed to slice the fich up so you don't get too much of it. Think of it almost like a kind of spice that you use to salt the sandwich. Also add potatoes, but I have to give you MAD props as you did it kind of correct and didn't just down the whole thing as it is. :) Also sorry for potential spelling mistakes.
Smilycat

He added potatoes..
Smilycat uhh, he added potatoes. And he liked it. So, why should he shred it?
Always somebody knick picking.
"it smells like if you got up real close to a dead possum or something" --Takes another monstrous bite
I'm impressed! Good job!
He sprayed his wife! 😲 hope she gets payback lol
Thats a dude bro.
She sprayed him later that evening in the bedroom.
Now they're even.

I think you have to get it from the yellow cans, they have guts, bones and everything. This is the filet version, it's probably not as bad :D
The smell is the same, the taste is the same. getting the filet version is just for the comfort of not having to get rid of all the bones and fins.
Trust me, im a swede and i eat this dish a few times each year, and it is just amazingly good!
Really impressive that you dared to try it. And you ate it the right way to. I'm swedish and i love surströmming.
great video! love seeing an american eat this the correct way and not just use it as a dare and make fun of it. i am going to try it as well, I've been educating myself on diffrent techniques and ways to eat it first though.
Walter white try's surstromming

surstromming, more like smells more like shitstorming....
Hats off to your wife who endured the whole process, you can hear her grasping for air in the background and at the end of the video she almost dropped the camera, I suspect she started to faint.
There is no way, from his description, that i would not power vomit that right away. Dude is a badass
This fish is pure garbage, but id rather be forced to eat this for the rest of my life , than to go vegan.
Vegan isn't really that bad.
I mean, they scream and wave their arms a lot in the beginning but once they're on the grill, it's fine.
Between vegan "cheese" and surstömming, I'll take surströmming. Comming from a guy who ate his first surströmming this evening.
@@HansenSWE haha that was a good one^^
You, sir, are amazing.
The right way to open a can of surströmming is to take the can outside (somewhere with lots of fresh air), dunk it in a bucket of water and puncture it with a can opener while fully submerged. The water will trap all the juices and (some of the) odors that have been stewing for months.
Good job man! You ate it pretty much the way one is supposed to. Hope you enjoyed it! Take care.
This must be the first good reaction to this meal. Great job sir! Even i flinch everytime anyone opens that can.
Isnt surströmming supposed to keep in fridge? Wonder what does the transportation to states do for the flavor
In Sweden, the following was indeed one way of eating it on flatbread: (1) take margarine or butter and spread it across the top, (2) sprinkle bits of the herring across the spread, (3) then, add onions, (4) optional, tomatoes (5) then potato slices (6) then lastly l, sour cream, dolloped across everything, (7) then-- enjoy !
Not a traditional Scandinavian design by rolling it up since the Swedish flatbread is slightly thickened with it placed on top to rolling it up. Its more like a Swedish styled pizza ! ! Amazngly well eaten ! !
"Come up close so we can hear it". Can't believe she fell for that.
Props for actually doing it the right way!
so I read through the comments, lots of props for our guy....I'd like to mention that the real trooper here was this guy's wife!!
I am interested to try it out also. Have seen non-swidish videos before tasting it directly from can and then... Found 2 videos now as an American and Swede shows how to eat it. Sour cream, onion, butter, bread and boiled potatoes definitely goes well with herring. Greetings from Estonia!
i really wanna try it. im not new to fermented food so i figured its not so bad. and if its a delicacy, im sure i can handle it.
PS. is that can still good? looks kinda bloated/swollen at first. i heard you're not supposed to eat canned stuff if its like that
honesty I would try this no questions. with an open mind most shit isn't as bad as people make it out. this guy proves that right here. people just love a taboo, or a good spook, or a mystery, or whatever...
I have watched many "surströmming challenge videos" on CZcams where Americans (and a lot of other nationalities) are eating the stuff directly from the can - and then basically are puking... I am Swedish myself, and I am happy to finally see an American (with a brain) that eats it the proper way. I don´t like it myself, but kudos to you Sir that you put in the effort to find out how to prepare it properly..
I love it myself. My husband hates it! I have noticed that most of the people that hate the smell and taste also hate seafood and things like sardines or anchovies. To me... I love all of it. :)
Finally a normal American who is not overreacting and missing the point of a food trying.
That was a really nice calm leasant video of trying a food.
