  • Rob Burrow's father remembers him in a heartfelt tribute that has touched us all deeply.
We remember the legendary Rob Burrow, a warrior on the rugby field and a beacon of hope off it, who passed away at the age of 41 from motor neurone disease (MND).
Rob's journey from being one of the fiercest rugby players in Britain to being confined to a wheelchair, barely able to move, is a testament to his unyielding spirit. Diagnosed in December 2019, Rob faced the cruel progression of MND with extraordinary courage and determination.
Rob left behind his beloved wife Lindsey and their three children: Macy, Maya, and Jackson. Rob and Lindsey, teenage sweethearts, shared a love that endured all hardships. Rob once beautifully remarked, “There’s something beautiful about being cared for by the only girl you’ve ever loved.” Their bond was a source of strength and comfort throughout his battle with MND.
Rob's family, especially his father Geoff, fought tirelessly to keep him alive, even securing a trial drug to slow the disease's progression. Rob’s diagnosis came after a rugby injury flared up, leading to a rapid and devastating confirmation of MND. His first concern was always for Lindsey, showing his selflessness even in the face of his own mortality.
Telling their children about his condition was one of the hardest tasks Rob and Lindsey faced. Yet, the family maintained a “no tears” policy, focusing on making happy memories and living life to the fullest. Rob recorded his voice so his children could hear him through a computer even after he lost the ability to speak, showcasing his foresight and love.
As his condition worsened, Rob remained reliant on his family but never lost the sparkle in his eyes, a reflection of his indomitable spirit. He dreaded leaving his family but faced the prospect of death with courage, finding the most frustration in not being able to be a “proper dad” on his own terms.
Standing at 5 ft 5 in and weighing 10 stone 5 lb, Rob was known as the “smallest player in the Super League,” yet his legacy is monumental. He played 493 times for Leeds Rhinos, winning eight Super League championships and two Challenge Cups, and was named in the Super League Dream Team three times. His determination, along with Kevin Sinfield, to raise awareness of MND mirrored his fierce dedication on the rugby field.
Rob Burrow's legacy will live on forever. We send our deepest condolences to his family and request you to keep them in your prayers.
