Hi. Should I buy the new MacbookPro M3 Max or the Mac Studio M2 Ultra for general use with Blender 3D and Xcode? In some Geekbench tests, I've read that the new M3 achieves similar results to the M2 Ultra. What makes more sense at the moment? Portability doesn't matter, speed and performance are crucial. I'm looking forward to your recommendations. Thank you.

Thanks for the extra real time fps tests! :) Honestly I'm mostly interested in how the real time workflow is, to me there isn't any big difference between a render that takes 20 minutes vs one that takes 30 minutes, versus a timeline that plays at 5 fps vs 10 fps. I got myself the Max with 64 GB to give it all the potential, I'll be having an eye out on updates, I'm pretty sure it will get better with software updates, as soon as these apps start using more of the processors more efficiently! DaVinci Resolve can run up to twice as fast on a Max compared to a Pro, but it's because it's more GPU based. Not sure about how blender works internally tho
Let's hope for the best! I'll check back for your collab with that artist to see the results!

So with that in mind, jumping from the 2015 pre-3.1 to the M1 Max with 32 gpu core, it was an insane speedup (both in eevee and cycles). Not to mention the laptop barely makes any noise while working in Blender. The eevee preview mode went from 5fps when looking around the scene, to at least pro motion's speed (120fps?). That's what I've noticed with my workflow at

When you're mentionning about the Blender update, you're refering to the METAL backend update from the upcoming 3.1?
Also I don't understand how render times can be different for both machines as only 2 HP cores separate them if they're not using GPUs for the renders. Or are they using the GPUs but not as optimized as it could be with the 3.1?
From what I know we indeed need to wait for the 3.1 to come out to know how well the GPU part will do for Blender. I'm stil asking myself if the M1 Max is worth it because most of the work seems to run quite well on the Base 14inch M1 pro model when it comes to creating models. I wil use it as a portable secondary machine as I got my desktop PC that can handle the rendering I need to do.
BUT! I just can't get my mind set on how the base M1 PRO will do over time.
-Will the 16 GB RAM be engouh?
-Will I be able to do all the 3D work I need to do on the go on the M1 PRO base model or do I indeed need the M1 MAX (speaking of the 24c version because I wont be going above) to be modeling and sculpting at a reasonnable level?
    I'm so lost right now...

Is it possible for one to get an M1 Pro Macbook Pro and be productive in Blender for the bulk of the work on the go, feasibly, and then have it render and do all the heavy lifting once at home, on a Windows PC with Nvidia GPU? Or does it not work that way. Just wondering. I've no experience with this, just mainly image/video editing, programming, virtual machines will be the primary usage, but in case I get into rendering, just wondering if such a workflow as I described would make sense and be do-able.

Exactly, and I had people arguing with me saying I’m being harsh with my conclusion saying you are better of getting a windows laptop with a decent GPU for less money but better performance when I made this video lol I’m of course going to see how these numbers change once blender does a full release with GPU rendering on apple silicon (yes it’s in alpha now but not when I made this video plus it’s not fair to test alpha software to a full release). It’ll be interesting to see the performance difference with the full update, but to buy something for “future promise” is stupid haha I will only recommend you buy something with hard facts and my own tests and results. It’s not to say these are bad macs but for blender, yes they are bad right now, in the future when I see blender updated, I will review it and make a new conclusion which is fair 😊
