Restoration - Pencil sharpener Studium 717

- Welcome to today's video. Did we renovate today? Hungarian pencil sharpener STUDIUM 717.
This sharpener is from the 1950s. It is made of sheet metal on the outside and part of it is made of aluminum on the inside.
The sharpener is used to restore the tip of a pencil or crayon.
When writing, drawing or sketching, none of us avoids the moment when a pencil or crayon needs to be sharpened.
Sharpeners can be divided into two groups:
Classic - which is a sharpener with one blade
And milling machines - and these are two milling machines facing each other, these sharpeners are usually hand-cranked or electric.
The first sharpener patent appeared already in 1828 under the number # 2444, registered by the French mathematician Bernard Lassimone.
Other patents are from 1860, but sharpeners began to be produced on a large scale between 1884 and 1915, mostly mechanical types.
And the pencil is an integral part of the sharpener, so it is worth mentioning that the first production of pencils was patented by the French chemist Nicolas Conte, and what were pencils sharpened earlier?
I think they probably used an ordinary knife :) And what do you think? Write to us in the comments.

Thanks for watching, I look forward to seeing you again in the next video :)
During today's renovation, I unfortunately did not achieve the functionality of the sharpener. I think the sharpener was not complete and therefore not working. I would like to ask you, if you have this sharpener and you can advise me what is wrong, I will be glad, thank you Radek. Any photos, please email: veradona@email.cz

Despite missing a piece or two, this was another beautiful restoration. Radek, you are very talented and take very good care of these antiques. It's always a pleasure to see Veronika give a description of how the restoration works. She is definitely a beautiful addition to your videos. Please tell her that I miss her tasty recipes. I wish you both many blessings during this upcoming week. Thanks to both of you for another brilliant video. 😊 👍👍👍
Yes I will, thanks Chuck :)
My great grandpa always carried a pencil sharpener in a pants pocket. He called it his jackknife of all trades. He kept the blades sharp and they never failed him. It was buried with him.
He would be proud of your efforts here.
Another term, that fell out of usage, was the 'pen knife' (probably a contraction of pencil knife), which was _much_ smaller than a typical jackknife.
I'm glad, thank you Wiley
@@ironwolfF1 pen knife comes from when scribes used a swans flight feather, which was modified for use using a “pen” blade, for use on parchment, female swan is called a pen.
I especially like this restoration, of course! ;-)
The different adjustable sharpness levels are phenomenal, something like this is very hard to find today.
Thank you so much :)
You saved a very valuable piece of Hungarian industrial history.
I wanted to send a super thank you, but it's not on the site.

@@RestorationAustralia Meglátogattam. Volt ami tetszett. :)
I found another Studium 717 online which had an image of it opened up,I had to blow it up to see but you are missing a part, the blade itself,it looks like a 6 blade boat propeller and goes on the shaft at 16:51.
I did quite a bit of searching but I had no luck on finding a replacement.
Thanks for the effort Scott :)
Nice job on a complicated sharpener Radek! I also enjoyed seeing Veronika explain the history of pencil sharpeners.
We are delighted, thank you :)
Albeit an incomplete machine, the quality of your workmanship never wavered. Hopefully you may complete this sharpener in due course. Thank you both.
Thank you very much :)
Amazing job!!!❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much Samantha :)
Very good restoration 👍👍👍Thank you for sharing. Be safe🇨🇦
Thank you so much :)
The single most overly complicated, ridiculously engineered and costly to produce design for a task that can be replicated with a $2 rusty knife. Great job on the restoration. I always love the outro with your wife's demonstration of the item and explanation. Great Channel! Shalom from Israel.
The first inactive tetanus toxoid was discovered and produced in 1924. This vaccine proved successful when it was used to prevent tetanus in the military during World War II, but this sharpener was invented in 1828, so there was no vaccine, so : why use a rusty knife⁉️
There are times when you want a really fine point on your pencil. A pencil sharpener does it better than a knife.
@@Marcelo-56 I wasn't suggesting to use a rusty knife, nor was I questioning the beauty of the design or the resultant function. I'm amazed at the hours spent to engineer the product, produce special tools to make the dozens of intricate parts, the labor to assemble it all, and then Market a device which one could replicate the result by nailing a blade onto a piece of wood with a hole drilled in it! My comment was meant to question the design, production and sale of the item. I can't imagine the effort was worth the final product.
Agreed!
@@rwagjr Which is why I said that sometimes a pencil sharpener is what you need, since it does a better job than a knife does in getting a sharp point.
I take it that you don't do drawings, either artistic or engineering drawings.
I once saw on a CZcams channel, I don't believe it was Verdona, someone restoring a machine to peel apples. The machine seemed unnecessarily complicated, although it did do a better and considerably faster job than just a knife or a hand peeler. Then I thought, "If this is a bakery, and I have to peel a couple of dozen apples, this machine makes a lot of sense.
I missed you guys!..Excellent restoration!!
We are pleased, thank you Lee :)
Best wishes from the U.S.A. Always enjoy your videos. Please always cherish each other even though it seems you have lots of time. I lost my wife to cancer just days before I retired.
I'm sorry my friend
To je super. Já to rozebrat, tak už to nikdy nedám dohromady. U restaurování jsem se zamilovala do pískování.

What a great restoration and explanation. You guys are great
We are very pleased, thank you.
Another fantastic restoration. And enjoyed the historical perspective on the development of the pencil sharpener. What great engineering went into this very utilitarian object.
Glad you enjoyed it Fred :)
WELL DONE!!!❤❤❤❤
Thanks Diane :)
Muy bonito y muy bien terminado. Como todos sus vídeos.
Muchísimas gracias Miguel :)
I've actually used a pen knife to sharpen wooden pencils before. It's... oddly satisfying!

Thanks again for the time you spend for us in your restorations and sharing I appreciate very much . I’m really admiring the people who designed these objects the hours and hours of designing where every single piece is studied is one of the first things I see when I look at an object and in some way the restorations you do is their to pay tribute therefore bravo and thank you .
Merci Vincent pour les gentils mots :)

Excelente as always, Thanks a lot.
Thank you Nesdel :)
Beautifully done

Such a small device, but a very large number of details. Radek, you are simply brilliant, very diligent. Be healthy, dears!
Thank you so much Aleksandr :)
👍👍
Brilliant work as always Radek. It’s a shame the sharpener was not complete.
Yes, too bad. It is very interesting :)
Preciosa restauración.
Gracias Antonio :)
Thank you for another interesting restoration keep up the good work both of you
We are delighted, thank you :)
Very nice. It is an unusual sharpener. Don't get to see many like that over here in the US. Very well done.
Thank you so much Stephen :)
The first school sharpeners I remember (late 40's) were twin milling cylinders, hand-cranked. At home, Dad with his handy pen knife put a point rivaling the mechanical on our Eberhard Fabers or Dicksons
I think the original quality of the machine you were working on prevented you from getting it operational.
Thanks, excellent job!
Thanks for the information Joe :)
Great resoration, I hope you get it fully working too!
If I manage to find the missing knife, I hope so :) Thanks Oliver
nice 🙂🙂
I really enjoyed this one. I don't use a pencil sharpener though I use a knife and sandpaper.
Sometimes it's easier :)
before many years u did a German pencil sharpener and you did it amazing like this .. but i was waiting for the test & sharping a pencil :)))) big respect 🥰
The main part of the sharpener was missing, that's why there was no test at the end. (I wrote it in the video :))
That is a nice looking little machine! When you were disassembling it I was trying to figure out how it worked, now I don't feel so bad because it's missing parts!
Yes exactly, I had the same thoughts :) My wife said no it's complete it cuts off the aluminum. Well, I didn't think so...
Hello Radek beautiful restoration as always well done friend
Thank you Vince :)
Nice job restoring the pencil to working condition. I have never seen one like that before. Great work k.
Thank you George :)
Nice work! When I need to sharpen a carpenter's pencil, I use a coarse wood file. When I use a pencil it can sometimes take too much wood off at a time. A file makes nice symmetrical cuts, easily exposing the right amount of graphite.
👍👉😉
Great restoration! Good luck with the rotating blades.
Thanks Alan :)
I much prefer your longer videos compared to the 5 minute ones that are just speeded up pictures.
Was wondering how it was going to work didn't seem to have a blade of any kind. Great restoration!
I agree. Unfortunately the blade was missing :(
@@VeradonaRestoration seems like it would be hard to get it or make it also..
A beautiful restoration. Loved the brass rollers linked to the adjusting mechanism. You're missing the six-bladed cutter wheel. I'll send you what I found.
Cheers.
nunca he tenido ninguno pero los conozco solo los he visto en peliculas e internet gran travajo en la restauracion.
Gracias Jon :)
Muy bueno saludos
Muchas gracias Walter :)
Great work as always, it wasn't until you said it wasn't fully functional that the idea entered my mind. Hope if you find the missing pieces you will follow up and let us see it work. Best friend in Texas. 👍😁🇺🇸
Thank you so much my friend :)
Too many parts for a pencil sharpener 😅 nice restoration 👏🍻cheers
Thanks my friend :)
I should never watch videos about pencil sharpeners. I get this urge to sharpen every pencil insight. 😅😅
Lol, thanks Norma
