The waterfalls were the spillway for the reservoir. All damns need a spillway, no spillway = too much pressure on dam = broken dam. It was a beautiful spillway, much better than a poured concrete spillway.

Sleepy Hollow is a beautiful area for sure, you guys were not to far from Kaaterskills Falls, its a busy place but well worth the hike if u get the chance. ( Catskill Mountain Day tripping) i think was the name of the video i did on it.

Really cool ruins! Moist wet ground at the bottom of an earthen dam usually means seepage and failure eventually. The house ruins could have been for the pumphouse keeper and the cement ponds could have been for raising trout for the reservoir. Just guessing. Thanks for sharing. Stay well.

Those tanks/basins at about the 8 min mark look like they may have been chlorine contact tanks. Looks like a baffle in the middle to extend flow length which is needed to ensure the chlorine is in contact with the water long enough to disinfect.

If i remember right on a,stream or river there would be a power house with something like a,water wheel.
Then a pump/ tank house, and then sometimes a bath/kitchen.

The entire Rockefeller Estate used to be called "Pocantico Hills". It was a huge private estate. At one point it had its own (private) nine hole golf course. My late uncle (who lived in south Salem NY) personally knew David Rockefeller jr. I actually met David at my uncle's house once (circa 1972). He got to play golf on their private course a few times. Of course he always told us about it every time he got "invited" to play there. I believe David is one the trustees of the Park and a curator of the museum. He was interviewed on a (PBS?) documentary about his family that aired a few years ago.

@@samanthab1923 There are quite a few celebs. that live in that area. Cindy Crawford & Richard Gere were my Uncle's neighbors. Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon lived in nearby Pound Ridge. George C. Scott and Collen Dewherst also lived in Pound Ridge. My aunt used to chat with Ms. Dewherst at the local market. She made it her business to know what celebs were in the area. Kieth Richards and Anita Pallenberg lived in South Salem for a while. (He talks about it in his bio) Bruce Willis recently purchased a home in nearby Bedford. Martha Stewart has a large estate in nearby Mt. Kisco. I still refer the that area as "Hollywood East".

In reading a little of this park's history and seeing the machinery in the stone building the dates all fit. That is not a pump house Cliff, but rather it is a hydro-electric generator house. That of course explains the need for the manmade lake. Back in the very late 19th and very early 20th Centuries large estates in rural areas, and this park would have been rather rural then, would had generated their own electricity for the estate. Depending on where they bought the generating equipment from would determine if they were generating AC or DC electricity. However my guess would be that they were generating DC electricity.
