      Some of the visuals are really good, yes, especially the first 30 seconds or so. After that it gets a bit weird - maybe I'm not making enough allowance for it being a music video, but goodness, 1:18 looks like someone's having a seizure (sorry). And yep, Raoul's hair and stunned-puppy expression crack me up.
      I actually like the lyrics! Maybe because it's fun listening to lyrics which I haven't known by heart for years, but either way, I enjoy it.

      @@Julia-lk8jn I know I'm like a year late, but it's literally because it's a music video. Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford are classically trained actors. Every action is dramatic, expressive, and leaves no room for interpretation of their emotions so everyone from the nosebleeds to the front row can see and understand perfectly. It's a skill, and I love the way it looks up close, but I suppose it's entirely subjective.
      I am honestly surprised how many people think it's cringe. Growing up in theatre programs, directing musicals, and acting in them, all I see are really good actors who are deep in their roles. I think it's wonderful.

      @@MrFireflies100 Yes, I... do. Maybe you'd be kind enough to explain why it's "Imitate William Shatner" Night. Meanwhile, I'll possibly teach you something.
      The term "camp" comes from the camp followers, who were young men who followed the army of the Roman Empire to perform entertainments and sexual favors for the soldiers. Thus, camp in showbiz means something made to expressly appeal to homosexuals.
      It's arguably the most misused word in the English language, since people think it means "kitschy" or something that is meant to seem cheap or not very well-made. Adam West went on at some length in his autobiography about how he despised the word "campy" in relation to the _Batman_ T.V. series.
      They know what "camp" means in the U.K., e.g. the _Round the Horne_ characters Julian and Sandy, _Are You Being Served's_ Wilberforce Clayborne Humphries, and the sitcom _Vicious._

      For me , the line "you'll give your love to me, for love is blind" is the perfect encapsulating statement for what I love abt the "love" part of the show bc they're both so wrong? And it's not like they find actual love and the end, but they kinda realize that they both fucked up at the end and love isn't the picturesque thing they wanted in this form, and while Christine still gets her cliche happy ending w Ralph, she's also realized she has to let her father go. It's just so wrong abt thus idea of romance and I do kinda love that. And just... so good. Thr phantom has perpetual incel vibes, and the mullet is a crime, and Christine needs to learn to overcome her daddy issues, but that's the point of it, isn't it? They're all wrong abt love, because they're all trying to compensate for or get back a love they don't have.

Like, for example, now we know what the Phantom’s full mask would have looked like when it still was that. And Christine’s singing higher and higher as part of an actual opera performance, only to have the last high note stand in for a scream is honestly really cool and gives a lot of context to why it’s written that way.

  • @EVITANDY
    @EVITANDY Před 5 lety +563

    It’s so easy for the hard-core fans to mock this in hindsight.
    Please try to remember that this was made long before Hal Prince came on board.
    The lyrics were the originals written by a Richard Stilgoe, again long before Charles Hart was there.
    At this time, it was assumed that Phantom was going to be a big old camp-fest, rather than the classic piece of beautiful theatre we now know.
    To compare Steve Harley to Crawford or anyone else who has been given the Prince treatment is also unfair. No, he isn’t the best singer or actor to play the role, but at the time they wanted a less subtle approach to the character than the one we now know.
    I honestly have no idea why Ken Russell was given the task of directing this, other then he was famous for campy romps such as The Boyfriend and Tommy, and this was how ALW envisaged the show at that time.
    Obviously, the genius that Hal Prince has, prevented this kind of schlitz from ever reaching the stage, but I can’t help thinking that this needed to be made to show how NOT to do the show.
    Please don’t judge this too harshly. Without it, Phantom may well have been a totally different animal.

    "Yeah."

    "What?"

    Basically everything involving the phantom is rough. The poor guy looks ridiculous. That being said, this is the best thing I’ve ever seen or heard and I love every second, from the decidedly un-sexy voice to the butter knife.

    This may be unpopular but I genuinely like this version. I mean I'm glad that they never casted Steve Harley as Erik because he simply doesn't have the right voice for the role but personally (maybe it's because English is not my native language and I don't notice the weirdness in his voice?) I still enjoy listening to this version a lot.

    1) How is this phantom worse than Gerard Butler
    2) Why was there a ball python on a gravestone
    4) How did they get the Phantom to do that little ragdoll dance when he was standing across the lake
    5) Who started this wierd thing where Raoul is a dopey loverboy? He was a fucken brat in the novel
    6) Seriously, who put that snake on the gravestone?
    7) Follow up question: Why did the cameraman zoom on the snake?
    8) Why is the phantom's neck so tense?
    9) What are those camera angles
    Edit: That mask is HIDEOUS

    • @BeWiL0991
      @BeWiL0991 Před 2 lety +6

      1:46 - Phantom’s wondering the same thing…that pause of his probably had a few lines that he dropped from fear when he saw a freakin’ SNAKE in his dungeon.
      The zoom in is just Erik’s fight or flight instincts kicking kn.
      2:27 - that little dance was actually live footage of him begging for help once he saw the snake…the moment right after is him noticing the second snake. Then he screamed and they actually took that and dubbed it in for Christine’s final note.
      Phantom’s neck is tense because there’s snakes in his lair and a rodent on Raul’s head and our boy Erik is just STRESSED right now ok.
