Thank you for all your Singer Machine videos. They have been most helpful to me. The manual is rather bare and these videos have helped the manual make sense. Thanks again.
Nice video...it's easy to forget that beginners don't even know there is a bobbin much less how to load and use it. You sound really helpful, too! Well Done! Trish Stuart
Always a good idea that if you are pulling out the bobbin to be changed that you let people see how and in what direction things are going so that they can then replace in the opposite rotation.
I couldn't see the two notches as your camera was out of view. I can only see one notch on my machine so can anyone help me out with a video that shows the two notches as I'm almost ready to throw my Singer sewing machine out the damn window.
Thank you so much for creating this video! I have a Singer 5830c sewing machine that I inherited from my mother and it was absolutely baffling on how to thread the needle and raise the bobbin thread. Thanks a great deal!
very helpful. My old Spartan Singer is now back sewing. I totally forgot how to load the bobbin, but it all came back after watching this helpful video.
took me a while to figer out the second notch. which is the one to the side, looks like a skinny silver long sticky thing. i used a needle to prop it in the slot. its treaky. then i just did the rest and it worked!! thank you!!!
I am lost. Could not see what you did with the 2 notches. That is what I needed to get. Is there any other video to show the placement of the thread going through the notches?
Actually this is useful for all basic to advanced sewing machines. It's the really really REALLY basic ROOKIE "how to" stuff on a sewing machine. ^^; Though I would suggest KNOWING what a bobbin IS first, HOW TO wind one. and what it means when the threat is being lead through the notches/loops in the slide plate. Basic sewing stuff.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I finally got my sewing machine back from my sister after more than two years and forgot how to set up the bobbin. Everyone kept telling me there's only one notch for the thread on the bobbin but I kept thinking "no, I swear there's two". Your video saved me from going crazy.
Thank you! After not sewing for a few years, my fingers (and brain) just couldn't get the bobbin loaded. Now I'll be able to do it since you refreshed my memory. :-)
In the video, you can see the thread is clicked into two slots in the bobbin holder. Then when you lower the needle and raise the needle, the upper thread catches the bobbin thread and pulls it up as a loop. When you pull the upper thread, the loop comes up high enough to undo and you're ready to sew. You can also try viewing triplebusybees video "Learning 2 Sew:Pulling Up The Bobbin Thread" for another video on pulling up the bobbin thread. Hope that helps.
I do hope that helps someone if this tutorial doesn't. My bobbin instructions most clearly specify the thread on the bobbin as clockwise (from where it's doming off the bobbin). Thanks for your addition!
Thanks, I've got it working now! My bobbin was getting all tangled up....the key thing that helped me in the video was seeing to manually move the needle down in order to catch the bobbin thread.
You're welcome. It's the "need to do it easily several times a day" parts of sewing that you need to be able to really reach your sewing goals. Happy sewing!
No, you need both the bobbin thread and the top thread. The principle of the sewing machine is that the two threads loop through each other. I think there's an article about the history of Singer sewing machines on the internet that shows more about how it does that. Happy sewing! Just start slowly and practice basics until you're confident. Then it's like bike riding - it's yours for life!
I couldn't do it until I put the string through the first notch BEFORE putting the bobbin in. If you look at the plate that has the notches in it you can see a groove where the string is pulled through that ends with a little circle and you can't really get it all the way down into the circle when you put the bobbin in first.
ok... so i was about to scream when this as well as manual helped in no way. the top thread kept getting stuck in the bobbin spool. reason/answer... the singer 257 does NOT use standard sized bobbin casings. It uses a thinner 66 (think that is what store lady said number was, they just sold me a bunch of the right size when I brought machine in). do not be deterred. once I finally got my 257 threaded correctly this bad boy can sew easily through 4 layers of denim! I love my new vintage machine!
Not a stupid question. You may have a self winding bobbin machine. The newer ones are like that ;). If you do have an older machine, you need to insert the threaded bobbin for the lower thread. Essentially a sewing machine takes thread from both above and below the two fabric layers and causes them to intertwine to form the stitch. Hope that helps.
Enjoy sewing! I don't take the negative comments too seriously. The videos are free, after all. And as to an old Singer, well, I'm proud to be able to be counting over 18 years of using this machine.
Try just sliding the thread along that left edge. You may also have a different model with a different bobbin case. Keep trying, and do some searches for the user manual for your model on the internet. Always good to have a copy of your user manual.
The bobbin thread becomes your lower thread, I have a good video by someone else in my favorites about how sewing machines work,I think. You have to get that bottom bobbin thread up through the face plate by using the needle to catch it, that's what this video is about. After it's through the notches, you just use the hand crank and let the machine pull up the thread, then un-loop them and you're ready to go! HOpe that helps!
After pulling out my dad's Singer 4530, I was able to re-thread the bobbin with ease. I can also thread the spool to the needle, but my stitches always turn up with globs [and I really mean globs] of thread on the bottom. I think that this is due to the string tension. The knob was removed, and the nut which the knob was inserted on, was twisted completely off. The screw which the nut was twisted on, is made in the way of a two pronged pin, and I cant seem to get it back on. Is there any way?
Mine is a 3343. Be sure you take the needle through one full turn. The needle goes from highest position to lowest, to highest again. Pull up on the needle thread when it comes up again, and see if your bobbin thread is hooked on it. If you have your manual, check for how your bobbin needs to be inserted, too.
@LizLovesGreen Did you ever get this figured out? I have the same model machine Singer Touch and Sew and it is not like in this video. The bobbin on mine is 2 clear plastic pieces that push together. There are no notches at all. The Singer manual is useless, it says the bobbin thread should pull up with the needle but it doesn't.
I seem to recall my really old Singer didn't really "click" into notches, but that had a whole bobbin holder that sat in the bobbin case. Once your thread is in the bobbin holder, can you bring your needle up and down and get the bobbin thread to hook onto the upper thread?
While using a zig zag stitch the needle jammed and broke. It seems that the timing is off, because the needle will not pickup the bobbin thread. Do you have a video that shows how to check the timing, or should I just take it in for service. Tune up costs more than I paid for the machine. Any suggestions???
This bobber thing was driving me crazy. It would not bring up the bobber thread. So I took the plate off and hand fed it through the hole. Pulled the bobber and needle threads to the back and start sowing. Singer Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
hi thanks for this video its really helping me out but unfortunately i cant seem to pass my thread through the notches cause its quite blur in the video. i can see the notches labelled 1 and 2 but i cant pass the thread through them. its frustrating me. help me out please
On the chance that it's the thread, unwind your bobbin (a waste, I know, but so is the tangling anyway), and thread it with some other name brand top of the line thread and see if that's the problem. Check your manual for lubricating routine lubrication points. Make sure that your fly wheel is engaged so that it moves the lower gears. When all else fails, call a service person.
I bought sewing machine singer stylist 418 but mine came without the bobbin so I bought a bobbin that is 20mm diameter. The problem is that it's not catching the thread. The bobbin is a little loose and doesn't fit perfectly would that be the reason. Could you please tell me the size of your bobbin?? Thank you
2 - As the thread comes off the bobbin for winding, on my machine it doesn't go into the first notch, but does go in the 2nd notch. Then, I have to pull the thread forward and then over to the left. (as if I'm trying to make it now go clockwise.) I continue holding the thread towards the left and gently pull it towards the back left, where there's a "guide" in place. Then, I manually wind the wheel so that the needle goes down and picks up the bobbin thread. Don't know if that will help.
I cant see the notches and I dont know how to hook the thread. As I turn the handwheel I see no movement in the bobbin area. Should I see something move to give me a clue as to whether or not the machine works?
i have 457, I can pull up the bobbin thread and everything will look normal but when i try to sew something the bobbin thread is idle and the top thread gets tangled in the bobbin well, any advice?
actually you guys should start your videos with: "Plug in the sewing machine to the outlet". It took me forever to figure out how to turn it on. (w/o manual) ;)
Hi! Where or how do you put the loose bobbin thread so that is comes out of the slide plate? The looses threaded bobbin in the video goes from it being loose and open to a closed slide plate. Thanks!
I followed the instructions from your video to insert the thread in my sewing machine model 534 free arm and doesn't catch the bobbin thread. What i'm doing wrong? Please advise
ok but when i m sewing the thread on the back of the material becomes loose and it make kinda like xxes not sure whats causein dat does it have anything to do with the bobbin because it does'nt happen at the top of the fabric
hello, i have a serenade sewing machine (singer serenade 30) i dont know how to insert the bobbin!!! please could u help me if u can! it has the notch more spread out and the second ones on the right, i can insert the bobbin and guide the thread round the notches but then i get stuck!! PLEASE HELP!!! tanx
You need to raise and lower the needle by hand. It will catch the bobbin thread and bring it through the feeder plate to the top. Um.. my series number is on the front of my machine, but I recall on my old, ancient Singer it wasn't obvious.
@scoutkatie OMG THANK YOU SOO MUCH i was stuck on that step for sometime.... i use the singer 9805 C and yes that is how you do it :) ! thanks agian !!!
I found a slit in which the thread fits but breaks if I pull on it. when I move the wheel to pull up the bobbin thread nothing moves in there. Shouldn't the bobbin move?
Nope, you keep the thread in your left hand, and slide it, click, click through both of the notches. The notches are just there as guides for the thread.
Help! Can you do a video showing how to re-insert a bobbin CASE that has been removed for cleaning? I got it out easily enough, but for the life of me I can't get it back in properly :-(
Hi Im new to sewing and I need some help. Ive watched all your videos but I get confused with this part. Ive threaded the first thread through the needle correctly. When it comes to the bobbin thread, im totally confused. I have it in there and through notch A around to notch B. Then i have no clue where to place it. I dont even kno what this bobbin thread does??? sorry help please?
@YourEpicPencil Check out my favorites, where I have favorited someone else's video about front bobbins. Mine is a top loading bobbin, and I agree with you. Front loading bobbins I find farrrr more challenging to deal with.
Nope, you don't need to hold the bobbin thread. Use the hand crank to lower the needle and then raise it to the highest level. Then pull up on the upper thread and that should pull up the bobbin thread. Then separate the threads and you're ready to go! Good luck! Oh, and keep asking, someone else probably has the same question.
Annoying when that happens!!! Give yourself more length coming out of your needle. May seem like a bit of a waste, but then the thread doesn't come out of the needle eye. Happy sewing!

Easy peasy. Great simple video
I found this very helpful and it worked for me. Some Singer machines only have one notch. Put in the model number see what happens. That's what I did.
Nice video...it's easy to forget that beginners don't even know there is a bobbin much less how to load and use it. You sound really helpful, too! Well Done!

Wish the bobbin part about the two clicks was viewable.
Good for you!
If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth a thousand pictures. Glad it helped, and happy sewing!
Always a good idea that if you are pulling out the bobbin to be changed that you let people see how and in what direction things are going so that they can then replace in the opposite rotation.
thats great! i figured it out. this singer sewing machine was my christmas gift and i am VERY excited to start creating!

Same! That's the part I needed the most.
This didn't help at all
Completely fucking useless

Can't see how the thread goes into the notches, camera should be right above bobbin not way over shoulder.
I wrote on my channel that this is a free video made with my digital camera. I'm sure that the professional ones will be much more to your liking.
@@sewmarm So free means poorly made? Gotcha

What size bobbin does 9410 take
Happy sewing!
Unable to see how ur going in & out of notched.
so helpful, thank you!

@Bo0botz92 Are you turning the wheel towards you?
Another victory comment, awesome, easy to see, and on an older singer

How to in stall the bobbin casing
I'm not familiar with that model. Can you feel the thread catching in the notches in the bobbin holder?
my singer machine model is 9217 and the bobbin is different and I finding difficult wind. It won't pick up bobbin thread.
The video it's not clear at all. There are two notches, all right. What do you do with them?
What should I do it I tried that and it doesn't work?
where can u get a bobbin????????

@Chickastar6 ;) Happy Sewing!
Watch the video again, and note that at 0:43 you are holding the bobbin with the thread coming off clockwise from the bobbin.
Hope that helps!

Ha ha! Maybe it's a treadle machine like my 1908 Singer. (Just kidding!)
So where did the thread come from to fill the bobbin?
Singer is now making video tutorials, and I think they made one on filling a bobbin.
i am having the same problem as you with the bobbin please can you help me
Also, check out my favorites for other people's videos on threading a bobbin.
I don't get how to put the 4 inches of thread into the metal bars
i got one 4 christmas too lol
Annoying when that happens!!!
Give yourself more length coming out of your needle. May seem like a bit of a waste, but then the thread doesn't come out of the needle eye.
