Why are people so ignorant to listen attentively before commenting. he came with a positive motive to address some issue relating to peace and unity.. not to argue or create controversy but for education purpose and unity. You also see his sense of humor too ..Listen to the full interview before commenting. If it’s a white man, Nigerians prefers to give them credit and reject their own assentor which are authentic. Nigeria was created, same goes to America and others.. that doesn’t mean people were not there before Christopher Columbus or lord lugard. We are all one Nigeria and should be proud of our heritage

Dont understand the superiority complex of some Yorubas. The current Oba of Lagos is a Benin descendant it is not up for debate. The truth is that Lagos had places that were Yorubas territory and benin territory before the british came. Today Lagos has been designated as south west and Benin territory has been reduced to what it is today. Going by today's reality Yorubas have the sole legitimate claim of the ownership of the land, but this should not change the history of the land.

Respectfully, both the Oba of Lagos and the Oba of Benin are only partially correct. The Benins conquered and forcefully imposed taxation on the existing inhabitants of Lagos island known as Eko” sometime back in 1550 A.D. This led to the instalment of Ashipa who unfortunately died before he could be installed as Oba. Upon his demise his son Ado was crowned as the first Oba of Lagos island “Eko” in 1630 A.D. The early fathers of the Lagos royal family as part of our history and lineage can be traced back to the Benin royal family. However, due to the centuries of intermarriage with the Yorubas our blood line is purely Yoruba our early forefathers/ancestors a distant memory. Hence the shared history with the people of Benin. The conquest did not extend to the entirety of Lagos as a state. Lagos was already well established, flourishing and inhabited by many Yoruba tribes before the conquest of the Benin people. I can attest to this as a true Lagosian and a member the of Isale Eko royal family. People need to get educated and stop trying to rewrite history.

Firstly, the name Eko is formerly "Ereko", there are European texts documenting this. Ori means head and pronounced "erí" in awori, Ijebu and several other Yoruba dialects including some dialects in present day Osun state. Oko universally means farm. "Eri oko" or "Ereko" was a pepper farm settlement later pronounced Eko. It is Yoruba. Do your findings & you will find other Ekos in parts of south west where Binis never stepped foot. The name was adopted to Bini lingo to mean camp because that was what Eko was for the Bini Oba i.e Bini's most famous war camp ever.
Secondly, Ikwerre land is today called Port Harcourt, they wear suits and their judges wear British wigs and gown during formal court proceedings, does that mean Ikwerre land was founded by the British? Also even Bini used to be Igodonigodo now in Yoruba meaning "Ile Ibinu (Ibini)", will you now say because of that naming Binin/Edo land was founded by Oranmiyan from Ile Ife?

@@odantetv9460You know nothing. Don't confuse people. I am Awori by heritage through Prince Ogunfunminire of Ile-Ife that migrated from Ile-Ife with his people to Isheri-Olofin and later other parts of what's called Lagos now. The term "Awori" means "the clay plate sink", which is the sign IFA give him to first settle at a spot along their travel in a boat, anywhere the clay plate they were told to put on the river surface sink by itself. The first point that happened was Isheri Olofin. Olofin is connected to Ile-Ife. From that point, some of them migrated to different parts of Lagos. My own immediate ancestors ended up in Ikorodu. So, Aworis are from Ile-Ife as most Yorubas.

I like the way that the Oba of Benin told the governor of Lagos and indeed every Yoruba's to their face that Lagos belong to the Benins. Today, the strangers (Yorubas in Lagos) who now occupy the political sit of power are using their political power to chase away and destroy the properties the properties of non-indigenes (such as Igbo's) and they even prevented Igbo's as well as non-yoruba's from voting during the last elections. I believe the visit of HRM Oba of Benin is to re-emphasize on history to the yoruba's. This is just a gentle reminder to the yoruba's now claiming to be the owners of Lagos. Meanwhile over 95% of such yoruba's are not the real owners of Lagos as they are not of the Awori's stock and therefore are not qualified to be called owners of Lagos State. They also came to settle down in Lagos state just like the igbo's of South-east and indeed every other person residing in Lagos state today.

      Right
      Your answer
Benin was already an empire before lagos was founded
Benin had his own sea port at gelegele where the Portuguese first landed in west Africa
The Portuguese where the first European to venture into the territory now known as Nigeria and tge Western coast of Africa.
Meaning the first European that landed in Nigeria Western African landed in gelegele thus Benin empire where the first to have contact with European.
The expansion goal of oba oroghua lead to the discovery of the coastal line of lagos.
Surprising to the Portuguese who never was the land nor occupy what is now lagos.
Thus Benin founded a new coastal port of Eko now lagos.
Benin empire might also ment they owns the water line of what now cover the West African coast line which is why it was names the bight of Benin.
      Fact
We founded eko And it opens up new trade route to the youroba region .
And over the century became the landing port for European instead on the first landing port at Gelegele sea port in Benin.

Have u also ask yourself why there's no Bight of Yoruba in map of Africa. Infact, before the colonial masters came there was nothing like Yoruba. It was Samuel Ajayi crowther that bring the ijebu and some other tribes together and name them Yoruba.

Oranmiyan's father was a benin prince called Ekhaladeran who escaped from being executed by his father, Ogiso Ewedo. When he was crowned in Ile Ife, he took the title Izoduwa (an Edo word for I have chosen a path of prosperity). Izoduwa, pronounced as Oduduwa through Yoruba intonation, was an Edo man. Oranmiyan had an Edo father and a Yoruba mother. Ancestry is through paternal bloodline, not through maternal bloodline. As such, Oranmiyan was a descendant and a continuation of the dynasty of King Igodo, the first king of Igodomingodo which was renamed Edo by Oba Ewuare the first.

Benin gave the name Eko, Yoruba gave Benin its name (Ibinni), if Benin owns Lagos, then Yorubas own Benin. Its like you have a servant who owns a property, the master (Yoruba) owns the servant and the property of course.. so Yoruba owns Benin and Lagos altogether ..common sense!
Benin is a kingdom but Oyo is an empire! Thats why Benin is just a small group of people in a state but Yorubas extend beyond Nigeria, beyond Africa. The difference is clear
In terms of numbers and spread, which are the parameters to determine dominance, Yorubas are more than Benins weather in Lagos, Nigeria or in the world.

However, Benin empire collapsed and shrunk, just like the former British empire collapsed and shrink to today's UK. These traditional monarchs are the rightful bloodline to tell us about history not their subjects/peasants. Although yooba people have their name, but the word Yoruba comes from the fulani word Yariba - meaning liar, manipulating, chameleonic or dishonest. If you know ANY Yoruba person, you would agree with the fulanis. They are a double edge sword, trust at your own peril. With that said, when the majority rule, they control the minorities. Today's Lagos is controlled and managed by the Yaribas. Unless the minorities fight back and pillage Eko again, they will never admit or submit Lagos to anyone. The keyword here is fightback to stire dialogue and peace. The country is too big and should be divided into three parts, so that everyone can have peace.

Thank God the revered Oba said Eko is called camp in Benin Language, But Benin's are not the actual founder of Lagos Island 🏝️ which is the Nucleus the Oba is talking about, Eko was a short form of Erèko (Farmstead) in Yoruba language which is been used by the Iddo Prince, Prince Aromire for there pepper 🌶️ plantation. Nevertheless we have Aborigines that leave on Lagos Island 🏝️ before the coming of the Ibini people.
We can't say they are not part of the settler's of the Island 🏝️ which is just a Nucleus of lands in Lagos.
If Ibiini's (Benin) are to be the real founder of Lagos, which they have jumped series of states without founding that place be4 reaching Lagos, the likes of Ondo, in particular Ilaje Ese-Odo, Ogun State today is a state that have borderlands with Ondo State, U Ibiini(Benin kingdom 👑) doesn't claims those State and lands, be rest assured that migration is has been long has human being existence, we can't do away with your people been migrated to those Nucleus of Lagoon Island 🏝️...
To made it clear, An Iddo Man precisely Prince Aromire (An Awori) were the settlers of this Island 🏝️ before the migration of the Ibini (Benin worriors)..
