This may be the saddest ending for Ward, but the music and imagery is honestly some of my favorite.

The thing is, John never stuck to his guns in the bad ending. You only get it if you leave all three exorcism sites right after arriving. Gohan was a pacifist that only struck out against foes when cornered, John doesn’t even attempt to try here at all (which would get the bad neutral ending if he did try)
From what I can gather, this ending is all about the UNSPEAKABLE twisting the dagger one last time before taking John to Hell. The world is being taken over by demons, Amy is lost forever, and everyone he loves is going to suffer eternally, but that wasn't enough. The UNSPEAKABLE wanted to remind John of his greatest failure, show him that Jason and Nate were never even born, and truly, indisputably break his spirit before it would be satisfied, most likely all as punishment for interfering with its plans.
This ending REALLY rubs salt in the wound, and, for that, I absolutely love it.
the version of this in the official soundtrack includes john saying "a gun with one bullet" before the final part of the song and a "mortis" at the end. take that how you will.

All people committing suicide go to Hell, so it makes sense that the UNSPEAKABLE dragged him there in the end.
"You should have had a normal childhood. I should have saved you."
that line hurts the most for me, tbh. perfectly summarizes why he's so guilt ridden for letting Amy die.
He let his fear get the best of him, had he pushed with the ritual the first time, the exorcism would have succeeded and Amy would be alive.
You know a game is spectacular when even the bad ending is done well
it seems like you have to be purposefully negligent to get it though, which is too bad. I prefer when you can get all the endings while being "in character".
@@Bleenderhead That’s fair, although it could be seen as in character for John if you look at his development through the story. One of the biggest plot points in FAITH is that John is a man with a lot of repressed guilt that he’s constantly reminded of and tormented with, yet he is tested with possibly the greatest and most important task of his life. Even worse is that, most of the time when he’s doing it, he does so alone. Sure he speaks to Father Garcia and Lisa every now and then, but most of the time he’s confronting cultists and facing off against whole demons all on his own with rarely anyone there to support him. Even his wife, one of the only other people he could possibly fall back on, ended up leaving him. Pretty much all he has at this point is his faith, which is already severely waning because of everything he goes through on his mission to prevent the apocalypse.
So taking all of that into account, the reason why this is John’s “greatest test of faith yet” is because he is one of, if not the only, people who can prevent the summoning of the UNSPEAKABLE and disrupt the Profane Sabbath, and he has to do so mostly by himself despite his internal suffering. That would likely take a lot of mental fortitude to overcome, perhaps more than John is able to muster. And in this ending, that’s exactly what we see. John is just too scared to go on, and his faith is shattered beyond repair. Without the will to continue, he succumbs to his suffering and neglects his duty, failing not only to prevent the end of the world, but to find his own personal redemption for all the other failures in his life, the biggest one being his inability to save Amy.

I just realized that Amy was probably behind that door with the crosses the whole time, and that John probably found a way to bring her with him back to his house in order to continue treating her
I think it’s implied that room contains paperwork and documents pertaining to John when he was in the psyche ward. It’s suggested he was emotionally abused during that time and so harbors the idea that anything from his time in psychiatric care was inherently satanic.
People out here slandering John acting like he did nothing, as if the first two games didn’t happen lol. He most certainly has been through it more than anyone should. Even the exorcism wasn’t his fault. They’re were outmatched. It would make sense if he’s through with it all. He even lost his wife for this. He isn’t even an official priest anymore. Dude got excommunicated. And this whole time being haunted by like the 3rd or 4th most powerful demon in the game. Give the guy a break. 😭
He failed to save Amy in the first chapter, and the second chapter was just a dream. The third chapter is where John can actually redeem himself, if you let him.
It's heavily implied that John "sold" Amy's soul to fcking SATAN himself. If he stays ignorant, he will be damned forever by this cardinal sin.

As someone who had an immense feeling of guilt through a couple of months, this is the insane recap.
I understand people saying that John could do just a bit of work to prevent Black Sabath and save Amy. It is a long read from me, so for the majority, I'll say - it's the best recap of life's "bad ending" I've ever seen in any videogame. It portayes people who feel tormented over something so bad they can't get up in the morning. I assume Airdorf knows it well.
As in many games, this is the one about facing your fear. A hero faces his own past mistakes, overcomes the challenges and saves the world. But I want to tell you why this ending also deserves to be here.
I may be mistaken, but John, I assume, is scared shitless of Amy. It's not a usual fear. He couldn't save her and blames himself. He doesn't want to go to Amy's room, even if she's not there, but there are papers about her reminding him about her. I know that feeling. You can't even see the face of someone who you let down. You feel agony, your throat burns and your heart skips a beat. His faith weakens and, I quote, she's "tormenting" him. A very accurate word. Even a single thought of meeting or talking to them is torture. You just want to leave, you are restless all the time and your mind can't handle it. And with each day it just doesn't get better.
It's because John wishes for forgiveness. But he is afraid to face it.
There are moments when you're so tired of that feeling you finally decide to meet your fears. John walks to Amy's house in the first chapter to finish the exorcism. Another great capture - John couldn't get the work done fully. In those moments when you just can't take it and go to the person you may miss something. Have no strength to tell everything and you think that "it's enough". Or you just can't express everything or have that forgiveness. Only after some time, you'll realise that you didn't succeed fully.
And you can't bring yourself to anything.
That's something that isn't portrayed well in the game in my opinion - but I think you can't even understand how people like this feel unless you've gone through this. And I will never wish anyone the same fate. In this ending, John begs for forgiveness. It is given to him - he's... forgotten by the universe. He doesn't exists anymore. There's no one who will judge him and he doesn't feel guilt.
It's a damnation of memory.
One thing is for sure - Garcia acts as a "parent" figure to John such as in my life, who tells him what right thing to do.
"Don't be afraid, John".
He tells him to overcome his fears. I shall say, that works in real life too. Sometimes you just need another person to tell you the harsh truth. Stop hiding and face your fears!
If anybody who reads it has his torment, I hear thee. I may not advise much, but if there's a person that awakens those feelings, write a long message. Prepare your speech. Express what you feel, but try to make it as clear as possible. It may need a few attempts. After you send this message, just send it or say or send it - a burden will fall from your shoulders.
It wasn't John's fault that Amy had been chosen as a new vessel. But in his mind, he needs to get the job done. After that, the release will come. I swear it. I have come through it and now I am well.
On conlusion, the music of the Memerix, the Aidorf's work is agnificent. Thank you for creating a game where bad ending is relevant and kicks damn hard.

Loved this ending. So morose and cold, with the music complimenting it all. Amazing game.
This ending could have also taken the opportunity to break the 4th wall by deleting your save file.

Missed opportunity but doesn't make the ending any less painful to see
Yeah, so in the game “Faith: The unholy trinity” there is the pretty scary ending called “Damnatio memoriae” basically some of the sinners not only was executed, but any information about them and any person who may create about information about them will be killed. Information would be erased and nobody will never even would know if there was that human. Basically pretty horrible kind of execution, the kind, which is nobody would remember, because nobody would know it. And yes there is information about execution itself, but not about executed.
So this is how you get punished... for being a coward. Everything about you, both physically and mentally, ceases to exist.

This is the most sad ending ever because in his thoughts in his actions you can tell the regret and the guilt of a man who lost something and knowing he could avoid this it tells even that he completely gave up by the fact that he does that pose lets him get damned for the rest of his existence
A perfect showcase of less being more. No dialogue, no scrolling text at the end explaining what happened to our hero, just a single well-timed cutscene, a haunting track, and the words "DAMNATIO MEMORIAE". This as well as the name of the ending, "A New Vessel," tells you all you need to know about the consequences of failing your mission.
There is a beauty to how this bad ending is portrayed, I love it.

According to Dante’s Inferno, the sin God hates most of all is treachery. Treachery is the lowest circle of Hell, the furthest from Heaven’s light and the seat of Satan. Treachery is the sin of Lucifer, betrayer of God, who was cast out of Heaven. Treachery is the sin of Judas Iscariot, betrayer of Christ, forever condemned to be gnawed on in one of the Devil’s three mouths. Father Garcia had faith that John would stop the cult. Lisa Pearson had faith that John would save her. Amy Martin had faith that John would free her soul. Father Allred had faith that John would take up his cross and carry on his legacy. In this ending, John Ward, through his inaction and cowardice, betrayed Father Garcia, Lisa, Amy, Father Allred, and literally the entire world. In the eyes of God, John Ward is worse than Lucifer, truly unforgivable. The only punishment befitting of treachery on a worldwide scale is for John to be wiped from existence.
This only applies because all these people somehow knew John has potential to be something better, someone who can do all these favours and bring up the best for all.... That's the only conjecture.....

He goes through damnatio memoriae (which means "condemnation of memory"), which is an old Roman type of punishment that involved destroying all records of a posthumous person's memories, properties, depictions, works, etc., as if that person had never existed, since the person is essentially erased from history.

One of the creepiest things is when the main character has the same last name as you, looks almost exactly like your father, has almost the same name as your father (different first names but same middle and last names) and strange things have started happening to you after you started playing this game.

Why is it that the final game in a trilogy always has the saddest bad endings? I understand it's because they tend to have the most powerful villains, and perhaps the traumas of previous games take their toll on the heroes, but they came so far, they fought so hard only to suffer more than they would if they just died early on. It's strange... and heartbreaking...

@@icecremmester WELL ACTUALLY, you only need to not go to the daycare on day 3 to get this. You can defeat the 2 previous secret bosses even, but if you don't go to the daycare, you get the ending. Which makes it even more sad if you do - he DID get actually so close to destroying a mighty demon, but at the end, cowardice took over and the world ended due to it

"damnatio memoriae" is latin for "curse of the memory" (approximative). it refers to a fate worse than death : being forgotten by everyone, even your family and friends. it's safe to assume this is what happened to John when the Unspeakable dragged him to Hell : he was forgotten by everyone.
I really commend Airdorf for not only giving you a bad ending, but one that feels soul crushing to watch. What makes this worse than other bad endings in games is that in FAITH, you know that leaving immediately will lead to bad outcomes, so you don’t get the excuse of not knowing better. Man, FAITH is such a good game…

Amy or the demon possessing Amy is a savage. She just said "FAILURE." to Gary and sent him to hell and said "UNFORGIVABLE." and "HOW ABOUT MERIDITH? DID SHE GET BETTER?" [[Meridith is John's mom who died because of an illness]]. That is some straight up emotional damage.

The beginning of this ending is the most horrifying part of the game. More horror games should try making the player feel scared in their own home because of how powerful that fear can be. I've never seen a bad ending in a horror game and had to turn the lights on when I wasn't playing the game.

It’s erasure. Complete physical elimination of any physical or memorial trace of you. The Romans, as did the Greeks before them, wiped names and histories of condemned men off of every historical record and barred their citizens from speaking their names on the pain of death.
It’s much, much worse for John. Now with the world gone due to his weakness and Heaven shuttered, only punishment of Hell awaits him.

iirc the mannequins are supposed to represent the twin martins Nate and Jason, two boys who unfortunately got miscarriage'd. yeah John was guilty for succumbing to his fears and failing to prevent the Profane Sabbath from happening.
Damnatio Memoriae pretty much erases anything to do with John like the places he went to and the people who know him.

John feels responsible for the fates(they died or are presumed dead while possesed) of all 4 figures in that scene. Lisa cant be here since she only dies when John is possessed.
So basically, in this ending John becomes a coward for neglecting his serious duties, thus allowing Gary and his cult to wreck havoc all around the world. As a result, John gets punished by Damnatio Memoriae, where it’s as if John never existed and all his personal works/records are erased from existence. That’s sad

Goosebumps. That’s all I can say about this ending when I played through Chapter 3.
This ending says a lot simply that ignores everything and doesn’t want to deal with the responsibility. He’s running away from the problem instead of resolving it. Honestly this type of ending I would call: The Coward’s Ending 😂 John Basically got sent to hell. After Amy pulled him in through the portal (obviously if you didn’t see the part that John was asking “wHy aRe yOu tOuRmEnTiNg mE” she did in fact pulled him in. Because Amy didn’t “magically” teleport him to that forsaken place, that is the place that John Truly regrets being there during part of the video he said that “he wish he could have turned away and leave an never looked back” which makes him in this ending a coward. Which is why it’s obviously unforgivable.

He isn't given the mercy that is Hell. He is erased from existence, because God and the Devil both deem him unforgivable. Everyone who knew him, forgot. The house is gone and everything, related to John, is either something else, gone or forgotten about.

I think this is how the game should of ended. No happy endings, no drama, and moving on… Just darkness and sadness with John giving up and facing his guilt. While it’s very sad I find it kinda beautiful in someways and it’s definitely a much more realistic ending for John. Many who face the mental challenges John did do not recover from it and instead continue their journey into the abyss.
No, for me the canon ending is the one where John defeats the true final boss and goes to fight more demons with Garcia,

Basically, since he didn't do anything to stop the Profane Sabbath from happening, the demons took over the Earth and mankind was doomed. He gets condemned by both God and the Unspeakable, and deemed unforgivable. He gets overcome by the guilt of dooming the world, and gets erased from existence.

Yep. Up to that point John has been fighting to both save Amy's soul and her siblings (who were just a trap laid out for him by the cult of Second Death to lead him on a wild goose chase while they prepared the Sabbath).
By stopping his fight he is both breaking his oath to God to accept responsibility for abandoning Amy and giving in to despairing over his guilt instead of trying to right his wrongs. It says something that in this ending he voices his regret at trying to exorcise Amy in the first place instead of wishing he could have saved her. It's worse than giving up, he's completely renouncing what good he managed to do for the girl he tried to save.

He did a sin called "treachery" Or known as the lowest circle of hell being far away from heaven and where the lucifer is and since John betrayed all of the people he knew he regrets it and decided that he deserves all of the suffering which is why he regrets it
