Κανείς δε θα το πίστευε πως οι άλλοτε πέτρινες Βενετσιάνικες αλαταποθήκες του 16ου αιώνα θα αποτελούσαν σήμερα ένα από τα μοναδικά γνωστικά - Περιβαλλοντικά Κέντρα της Ελλάδας, του οποίου η δεκαετή λειτουργία το κατατάσσουν στο βάθρο της πρωτιάς, σε πρωτοτυπία και ενδιαφέρον.
Η περιοχή που βρίσκεται είναι οι Αλυκές Λευκίμμης, μία τεράστια έκταση περίπου 1050 στρεμμάτων όπου εκτός από τις υπαίθριες εκτάσεις παραγωγής του αλατιού που είχε κάποτε, περιλάμβανε δύο μεγάλες βενετσιάνικες αποθήκες αλατιού, ένα τρίτο κτίσμα που χρησιμοποιούνταν ως διοικητήριο, τα ερείπια του οποίου σώζονται μέχρι και σήμερα, το παλιό ζυγιστήριο, το αλώνι- στραγγιστήριο, όπου «χαμπάριαζαν» (έκαναν σωρό) οι εργάτες το αλάτι, το μηχανοστάσιο- αντλιοστάσιο και το φυλάκιο από όπου οι φύλακες έλεγχαν των χώρο των αλυκών
