    Our planet has run out of resources, and we are forced to move. We have discovered a series of planets and sent our rovers to test their environment with the hope of colonization. Our rovers have confirmed 1-6 viable colonization options.
    Planet Unknown is a competitive game for 1-6 players in which players attempt to develop the best planet. Each round, each player places one polyomino-shaped, dual-resource tile on their planet. Each resource represents the infrastructure needed to support life on the planet. Every tile placement is important to cover your planet efficiently and also to build up your planet's engine. After placing the tile, players do two actions associated with the two infrastructure types on the tile. Some tile placements trigger "meteors" that make all planets harder to develop and prevent them from scoring points in the meteor's row and column.
    Planet Unknown innovates on the popular polyomino trend by allowing simultaneous, yet strategic turn-based play via the Lazy S.U.S.A.N. space station in the center of the table.

    5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
    4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
    4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
    3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
    3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
    2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
    2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
    1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
    1.0 - A game that is just bad.

    Hey Alex, thanks for the review (as always! ).
    Just managed to pick up a copy of this at UKGE to play solo and for family play - appreciate the simple, solid gameplay "out of the box" with options to mix and add complexity (my family being non gamers but able to handle and enjoy gateway games confidantly). Looking forward to playing with my wife and daughters and diving into its solo play.

    One other feature for variety is the inner tray can be lifted and rotated to change the tile pairings in each depot. I haven’t tried changing the pairings yet, so don’t know how much impact there is, but it’s there to use.

    Glad that the wait wasn't in vain. There's be a lot of games delayed the last couple of years and thankfully the ones I have received were definitely worthwhile. Thanks for the perspective on this one. Kind of wish I bought it now. I wasn't really into polyomino games when this was on Kickstarter and now I love them.

    It was your late pledge video that made me get this and partly because I really wanted to help an indie designer who was struggling with the new rising costs. Can't wait for my copy to arrive

    I agree. We've also talked about how easy it would be to implement a Cascadia-like system with points being awarded on each terrain type at the end of the game, just to make the placement and tile selection decisions a bit more crunchy as you are deciding which objectives to chase based on what your neighbors are doing. This will be my go-to for short play and higher player counts. At lower player counts, however, I much prefer Isle of Cats or The "Beast" of Odin. ha

    Hey Alex, thank you for the overview and review. My friend just got this and I confess it completely passed me by. Looks great! (all be it maybe a little "cheap"). Love the idea of real simple stuff to get the kids round the table with the ability to apply "add-ons" for more strategic / "big people" play 😉
    I wonder, something not touched on, is there potential for AP much? (Thinking about your comments regards speedy simultaneous play)

    I was able to score a retail copy. This is the only space themed game in my collection (not a space fan), but one of the most FUN and interesting games in my vast collection. What a surprise; I wish I could get the neoprene gamemats. I heard they are going to launch another campaign in 2023…I hope so! I am mostly a sologamer and this plays well solo as well. Easy teach. Tons of replay options.

    Complained about the component issues in my copy and after one email from the designer and owner of Adam's Apple Games he ignored me. I love the game but after such terrible customer service I'm going not going to give him any more of my money. All of my corporation boards are basically falling apart and he tells me that's within their margin for quality control.

  • @npckse8508
    @npckse8508 Před 2 lety

    While it has a lot going on component wise, this is a solid game. I think I like it more than Barenpark and I love the variability what with the different corps and planets. I am sure there is a world where they could have done this smaller and cheaper, but I think they struck a good balance. Heavy cardboard mats likely would have warped the moment they left the box. Neoprene would be cool, but cost prohibitive.

  • @ByDylanYoung
    @ByDylanYoung Před 2 lety +1

    I completely agree with your review, gamewise and component-wise. Glad to have it but a bit disappointing that it feels like a production quality is from the 70s, when they cared less about the longevity of games.
