I tried these and the handles consistently nipped the skin between my thumb and forefinger. Gave myself quite a few blood blisters, until one time they nipped me so hard I dropped them and them head cracked clean off.
Maybe if you wear gloves they work well. Otherwise a complete hazard.
Some people should not use tools. EVER!
I use these all of the time with stainless steel frets. You have to hold the tool lower on the handle and this will not happen. I can’t imagine NOT using these to trim down the tangs.
I just saw this video after I submitted my order at Stew Mac for these nippers. Thanks for the thoughtful review. It helped me confirm I made the right purchase.
Great video! Thanks for posting this. 😎
At 11:20 you mentioned that you needed to keep track of the second insert.
I solved this by replacing the original M3 retaining screw with an M3 x 20mm dome head screw. I slid the second insert onto the rear protruding thread and secured it with a nylok nut. I have ball drivers and small spanners on my shadow board so I threw the Allen Key away.
I bought this tool to do a re-fret on an Old Les Paul, so basically my customer paid for it. Works flawlessly!
Thanks Chris!! U have been a lifesaver in so many ways!! I appreciate you sharing your trade secrets!! Another great video
I love these. I only use stainless frets on all of my builds. ONLY issue is that you have to be careful you don't pinch your palm!
This is all I’ve ever used. I can’t imagine using anything else these things are fantastic.
Yeah I bought these before they were on sale lol. They work great as far as nipping the tangs go. I get a nice, flush cut every time and it never leaves any tang remaining that I have to file off but it seems like I have to squeeze kind of hard. I've never owned any other tang nippers to compare them to I was actually using my dremel & file to file the tangs down prior to getting it.
I bought these a while back and tried them out and the work great. I was using sheet metal nibblers but those have gotten expensive enough that it's not worth buying them and modifying them with a dremel tool to accept fret wire. They were $3-5 a long time ago but it seems they are $20 and up now which is ridiculous.
Love these, they save so much time. I still have to file the remnant of the tang down a bit but it doesn't take much time.
I have this tool unfortunately I payed the more expensive price but I do think its worth it especially for stainless frets.
Looks like the Stew Mac Fret Kisser & Tang Nipper are on my to buy list now 💸 no price on what helps the workflow & final result even though this craft does dent the wallet like no other...'the dude abides'
Thanks for the review
I've jumped into making Cigar Box Guitars with a fully fretted neck. I just bought one of these when they reduced the price. Haven't started my next build yet, but looking forward to using these. I've played around with it a bit, and it seems to work flawlessly with the fret wire.
Important Warning: these nippers proved to be incompatible with stainless steel frets. In fact, they broke on the very first use, leaving me both surprised and disappointed.
I refretted a strat with jumbo stainless and they worked great for me but like said in this video you have to figure out the inserts. I would contact Stewmac they have a good warranty.
@@Robert-Smith I have a strong fondness for the tools provided by StewMac, and I must admit, their customer support is truly exceptional.
I received a replacement for a tool that had broken, but to my surprise, the replacement also suffered the same fate. I even attempted a more cautious approach, trying to take a smaller bite out of the fret, yet unfortunately, my efforts met with dismal failure.
Mine work fine for stainless. If they do break, they got that good stewmac warranty.
I've been using this for 2 years now and only do stainless frets. Works fine for me. Just need to be careful to not pinch your palm.
I only use stainless steel frets. No problems at all. You must have used them wrong.
The edge of the knife collapsed after the first set of stainless steel frets (sintoms). Even a discussion was raised on this topic with stewmac, since they were positioned for stainless steel as well.
They must have improved them. I have done several complete sets of stainless steel with no signs of wear or damage. Did you send yours back to StewMac for a replacement?
BEAUTIFUL Guitar!!!! 😊
Nice tool.
I wonder why you use these tools at all when you have developed that simple jig that uses a hand file to grind down the tangs? 🤔 Is that jig not reliable enough or precise enough? Or does it take too long?
It's pretty time consuming hand filing the frets. I made a Dremel jig based on one of Chris' fret jigs. It worked really well on straight pieces of fretwire, but not very well on pre-bent wire as the amount taken off was not consistent along it's length because of the radius. I ended up purchasing a set of these instead.
