Full props to Hadley for being able to hold up his part that damn well. Ramin and Sierra are really damn powerful and Hadley is so much on their level in this that it’s too good
Ramin's voice is SOOO dynamic! It's otherworldly throughout the whole scene. Even compared to his voice singing "yearning" at 0:19 and how incredibly soothing and smooth it is with the tonal gearshift at 1:39 when he's truly hypnotizing Christine, and 2:11 when he just LOSES it and his voice gets this double edge gruffness.
I always thought it was kind of weird how she believed there was a voice giving her voice lessons ans not some creep. But after I hear his voice here I'm just like, "I'll believe it."
Hadley, poor man, did the most remarkably generous Raoul performance ever. He was just a little smug, a little arrogant, a bit dismissive, a bit too cocky… He played a Raoul to set up the sequel. He just doesn’t believe Christine is really tempted. He doesn’t believe he has serious competition, and when he has to fight for her, he is just a little patronizing and condescending. He has an effortlessly lovely voice and is dang sweet, when he isn’t playing this Raoul. It amazes me that he was able to play it this way, and that he DID it. He made himself just a bit smarmy, feeling sorry for the poor, deluded girl who got distracted from his awesomeness. Also, remembering Ramin went into this wholly focused on playing the Phantom, and didn’t have a lot of (any?) formal music training, but had to play the musical genius up against Hadley. Who definitely is solidly trained. It is delightfully pleasing that these two idiots now perform so many joint concerts. Not the two actors most would expect to come out performing together repeatedly, but they’re perfect. Then I look back at this performance, and once again I’m in awe of how good acting can be. Such subtle arrogance. Lovely.
Scott Hamp I believe that Sierra is the best. I watched this performance and I have been to Broadway, US tour 2 times after that and I am going next week again to see the US tour. However, every Christine disappoint me because I have the standard of Sierra ad Ramin in my mind.....
Ramins voice is so sweet and soft yet so powerful and seductive and at the same time so soothing and hypnotizing, so strong and powerful but gentle and angelic! Thats why he is the best Phantom
LittleLotteWanders I think he said he is more of a high baritone than tenor...but yes his high range seems so full and effortless. Especially in Love Never Dies, there are many songs where he is in his high range for awhile and it is incredible.
Just a comment about how Hadley Fraser is as incredible and powerful as Sierra and Ramin, because he really is, and every comments are about the two of them, but really the three of them are the holly trinity Hadley is extremely talented, I love his Raoul
I remember seeing this live (not this exact performance, but ‘Phantom’ in general) and being towards the back of the theatre, but the fire was so strong that I felt it from where I was. I had never seen the stage version of ‘Phantom’ before, so this took me off guard!
OBSESSED with the little riffs that Ramin does when he sings “yearning”!!! Ever so slight but he definitely sings two notes there, “yuh-ern ni-ing.” Anyone else notices/obsessed over it?? Hahaha
ok I adore the three part harmony, myself but I can see why some productions cut it - because when Hadley changes the key too high, it throws off the duet - the original works so well because Raoul sets the key - when he is competing with them it gets difficult to hear.
Yeah, I understand that the three-part passages are hard to follow. Unless you've memorized them like I have. But they're my favorite parts of the original recordings, and I really miss them.
@@LPrecure Honestly that can be said for the notes songs and the final lair scene. It isn't a problem for most fans because we know the soundtrack so well that over time we've managed to memorize what each character is supposed to say making it simpler to pick out what is being said. I mean, I get it, but…opera has always done this. The final trio in Faust comes to mind. That’s kind of the point-a lot of Phantom is meant to be operatic. It just isn’t in a foreign tongue. XD And now that PotO has been around for 35 years, we’ve all had time to “study” it the way people often study opera (or Shakespeare) before they see it. Historically, there was a time when people made the decision that opera could be translated to the local language, but people didn’t prefer it. In fact, they decided that being able to understand the words directly was distracting. I’m not saying that that is an entirely sane attitude. Because that sounds to me like he did intend to show her his face and give her a fair chance to understand. It’s not called “The Vicomte de Chagny,” after all…)
