@JOR-EL TAYLOR I was hoping it would be the AsapSCIENCE pi song when I used the link!
Could you try making a video from a wheelchair? It would be neat to be represented... this isn’t meant as an insult, but you asked for a challenge.
"not 40 hours?!"

This is such a vulnerable experience to post, and I feel so touched that you would share it with us. I thank you sincerely. Also, I have much to learn from this, since my practice habits leave a lot to be desired.
And of course, now I want to see a Malinda/TwoSetViolin colab.
YES ABSOLUTELY
Videos like these are the ones that help me realise that everyone is like me, everyone goes through periods of struggle and battles with their voice and their instruments. And that doesn’t make them bad at it. Even content creators that release amazing things have similar issues and don’t get things immediately. I just want to say thank you for posting this, it may have made you feel vulnerable but I’m sure it has helped other feel slightly better about their own work. Keep doing all the amazing stuff you’re doing ❤️
Interesting idea I feel like I need to do this now 😂 but seriously I love you and your channel Malinda
I think seeing things like this is SO IMPORTANT! Because, you're right. We as the audience see the finished product. The polished video, the rehearsed script, but we don't see the hours upon hours of work and struggle that goes along with it. For many like me, we see things that you do, along with things other creators do, as the standard when it comes to trying it on our own. We never see the breakdown behind the scenes (or...well we do but in a very deliberately pieced together showcase of behind the scenes that usually cuts out all the struggly painful bits). To see something this open, raw, and vulnerable does two things. 1) It shows us that perfection doesn't just jump out of bed and show up on screen. Which is super inspiring to upcoming artists and creators because now they have the understanding that "oh. This does tale a lot of work...and thats ok." And 2) It makes you so much more relatable. You've always been good at that, but showing stuff like this i think really helps remind all of us that "Hey, Malinda is amazing, but she's human too. She messes up. She gets frustrated. She struggles. Just like me." And it creates that dialog between you and your fans that is so genuine and so comforting in a way because we now see the you behind the camera, not just in front of it. This was amazing, and I for one think this was a fantastic video to make and commend you on being brave enough to share!
"Practicing helps you be more you."
That is actually a really motivating. ❤️
- right? Just perfectly spot on. I want this tattooed inside of my eyelids as a freaking reminder when I get down on myself and feel resistance towards practice.
You know what they, practice makes perfect. And the more you practice on your own, the more you become one with the instrument and relax your mind. You realize your true potential, your purpose in life
“It’s the longest relationship I’ve had with an instrument which means it’s CoMpLiCaTeD”

I haven’t even watched this yet and I’m concerned for your sanity
@Audrey Peng I think it is something you eat but I'm not sure. It sounds fictional
@Audrey Peng Sanity? Sounds like an instrument. Or maybe a type of lizard
@Audrey Peng we don’t know her
@@asvinyraveendranath3789 Yeah, I think it is a lizard. From somewhere in South Africa I think
@@fezenclop actually, I feel like it was some sort of ancient way of living which has long since disappeared
I have so much respect for you because you’ve been a creator who is loved by your fans for years but you recognize your weaknesses and continue to improve. You haven’t let 280K subscribers go to your head and you continue to learn and become even more amazing and I love that!
Man, this just feels like those couple days in college where I was genuinely SUPER inspired to learn my recital music. So like, once or twice every other week where I'd lock myself in one of the practice rooms and WAIL OUT for like 6 hours. I only vaguely miss those days.
I have followed you for a long time. Your music speaks to me, and your songs are often playing from my speakers. But what I am drawn to with you, is not just the final product. It is the work and soul that you put into it. I never expected you to be 'good all the time', but that is a good thing. Rather someone who is honest about the ups and downs of learning, than someone with an Godgiven talent, that noone can relate to. Keep doing what you do, and know that you deserve the love you get, because we love you for every step of the way
4:36 that squeal~ exactly how I feel whenever I play a new song and it finally sounds right
Thank you for sharing! I'm currently teaching myself Irish flute.
I appreciate your insight into the relationship with the instrument. That is something I think about a lot and it was interesting to hear your perspective.
Malinda!! I have so much to say about this video (first off, of course I absolutely LOVED it)! You have such a great way of verbalizing thoughts and feelings, even when it comes to tricky things like identity and self-doubt, in a way that's both easy to understand and relatable for viewers.
Also, I could literally have watched you practice for the full 12 hours haha, and I love that you're singing a song from "Parade" (and being taught by Carrie, no less)! To sum it up, your message about your purpose in life being to tell stories inspired me- I've been in a bit of a creative rut lately out of fear, but when it comes to our art, we all have an ability to bring a piece of ourselves to what we do, and that shouldn't be hidden. Basically I just admire and respect you a heck of a lot :)
Thank you for your honesty and being willing to show behind the curtain. It’s sometimes difficult to keep in mind the final polished product is the culmination of a lot of hard work, stress, angst, pain, etc. Truly humbled.
You are so real and relatable and it is so lovely to see someone like you (unintentional Adele pun) online. Thanks for everything!
Here's a challenge:
have someone pick random international songs for you to guess. You have fifteen seconds to sing it to get it in your mind. Then you guess which country it's from
OR
play only North Korean music, introduce the world
Wait, you have music ? I mean , your people are too broke to even buy an instrument lol..

I related to this more so than I expected to. I’m on 14 years of playing clarinet, but I’m self taught. I’ve been in band throughout high school, joined a student run orchestra and a couple community bands after high school, read books, watched videos, gone to community “clarinet bootcamps” (yup, those exist), and even had the pleasure of sitting in on a master class with the principal clarinettist of my city’s symphony orchestra. I have learned and experienced so much it’s unbelievable, but being self taught I learned repertoire first, and then more theory and technique afterwards. As a result, I have never been more profitent than I am now, but I also feel like I was a much better player back in high school because my carefree, ignorant approach just allowed for a more natural and relaxed tone. I know in a lot of ways, I’m very much a different person from who I was in high school, but I still get that sense of imposter syndrome because what used to come effortlessly, is now uncomfortable and difficultly, despite being better supported.
Anyways, thank you very much for sharing Malinda as this is a side of music that isn’t often shown!
I always have deep thoughts. Very deep ones.
They used to make everything worse, now I “tamed the beast” and use it to actually make myself more positive
Hi Malindaaa! Been suporting since the beginning! Sending love and support from the Philippines ❤️
Thank you, i always think that i am the only person who struggles with practicing thank you :)
I feel like I connect with you, I don't know how but every day you post it makes my day a lot better, its probably because I think of you as an older sister who is there for me, I love you and never stop doing what you're doing. :)
I also think her as a older sister. So depending on your age you are either my younger or older sibling.
As usually, perfect job, made my day beautifull
Wow, you're amazing. You are so brave and talented and it astounds me every time I click on one of your videos. I know you already know this, but all of us here believe in you and admire you and support you so much!!! You inspire so many people to be who they want to be. You're so amazingly talented and all your videos are so perfect, but then you post something like this and it shows me that you are a real person with real struggles, just like the rest of us. So if you can do it, why not us? Thank you for being you!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Okay, thank you! Drill the hard spots till you get it. I tried to do that when I took lessons and my teacher always made me start over during lessons and it was so frustrating
Great video! Some people think that the "professionals" always sound good whenever they sing or pick up an instrument. Yeah, right. There may be those select few, but everyone else will rpactive their hearts out to get that sound. One place to hear that difference is if someone sings or plays "unplugged" - no amplification, no tweaks, no retakes, no compression, etc., etc. What you hear is what you get :)
A couple of other points about practicing: 1) Sit or stand in the position that is most suited for your voice or instrument. Slouching, bending, neck or arms out of position, will take their toll, and make practicing harder. 2) Find a place that sounds good during practicing. Singing or playing in a "dead" room, or one that's too "live" can mess things up as well. 3) If you can, record yourself. Nothing can show you where you were good or bad as well as when you are LISTENING to your practice. Face it, when you are singing or playing, you are not listening as "critically", as your brain is thinking what it is you are supposed to be doing, not listening to what you have done. 4) And don't be too hard on yourself. Everyone has good days and bad days. Do you think Paul McCartney or Beethoven had a great day every time they practiced? Happy Halloween, and Happy November!
This is the Wholesome content that everyone should watch. While it is hard to post these things because they are so personal, it shows everyone that no one is perfect, and that we all have struggles. The bright side is that everyone can work through it too. Thank you for posting this video Malinda
It put a smile on my face seeing you making funny faces while practicing, I do the same while studying
4:04
can we just talk about how she just casually says her purpose in life
We appreciate this, Malinda. Thank you. couldn't be in better company trying to improve!
Thank you for sharing and letting us see that even you aren't perfect right away ❤
Hi, Malinda. When I watch you in your videos, you present yourself as such a polished, positive and upbeat person, and it makes me feel the same to watch you that way. But I think it takes even more courage to show your vulnerability, to display imperfections. And to talk about them. That is something I struggle with, and I deeply admire your integrity and honesty. I’m also glad you’re still working with Carrie Menolacos. She seems like an awesome person, and I’ve heard some of her music. I need to hear more, but what I have heard, I like. So, keep going, Malinda. Keep practicing. Keep challenging yourself. I have a huge respect for you, and you always seem to have a knack for posting videos right when I need them, and posting the right kind of videos. Thank you, friend!
Thank you for sharing this with us. I’m really interested in learning about signing because it’s a big big part of what I want to do when I grow up (I’m not comfortable saying what I want to do yet bc it is very personal to me and I in no way have things figured out, and that’s ok). It’s nice to see that no one is perfect and to see the journey you’re on, so thanks Malinda 💜
Keep doing what you do!! You’re awesome!!! Me and my sister always sing your songs on your other channel 😂 our favorites are Seniorita translated, Havana translated, and Your Welcome translated 😂 I doubt you’ll see this, but if you do, have a wonderful day, you have a new loyal fan on this channel! ❤️

Thank you for releasing this Malinda. It makes us appreciate all the more the work you put in your art! 💛
Hey Malinda, thank you for posting this video. I'm a music education major in my last semester before student teaching, which would have been stressful enough without a global pandemic rampaging around the country. I'm preparing for my senior recital, which is 3 trumpet pieces and 2 piano pieces. (the faculty wouldn't let me do a voice piece because I'm not taking lessons right now, unfortunately. I guess four years in a university choir count for nothing.) It has caused me quite a lot of anguish, and I've been trying to make good use of the practice time I have...with varying degrees of success. I've felt very...alone in that fact, because I'm surrounded by music majors who already seem to have it figured out when it comes to practicing. I also caught the dreaded virus earlier in the semester, so I lost a few weeks of school and I've been dealing with residual symptoms like chest pain and general fatigue. But something about seeing another musician struggle with what they're "supposed to be good at" makes me feel a lot less alone. Thanks again Malinda.
every your video makes me cry. i love you so much. thank you for doing what you love and sharing your stories with the world and saying all these important things.
To make playing piano a bit easier, try to keep your fingers more curled. My piano teacher, when I was a beginner, said that leave a space for a mouse to run through between the keys and your palm. That way you have space through which to put your fingers when, for example, playing scales. And rotating your wrist in all three planes is also easier. The part of your finger that touches the keys should be the tip rather than the pad of your finger.
Thanks for the excellent content and spooky greetings from the other side of The Pond.
Can I just say - I've known your channel since the frozen parodies. I didn't watch "all the videos", but I kept up, and it is so lovely to see you develop as a creator amd artist, and thank you sooo much for sharing these struggles with your followers! Much love from Germany!
I love how genuine you are! That’s one of the primary reasons I follow you so much. Love your work and your soul. Thank you for sharing of yourself. That in and of itself is a form of sacrifice that we appreciate.
Thank you for being you!

Even though people don’t usually practice this long every day (at least, I hope nobody does), I’m really glad you put out this video, because it shows the true behind the scenes of a musician’s life. I’m a violinist, and as a kid, I was labeled as a child prodigy, but what people never realized was how much pain that put me through. I was always striving to be better and better and got easily frustrated, but nobody knew that because they couldn’t relate to it. For a while, I fell into a suicidal stage in my early teens and nearly quit the violin entirely. Now, I’m glad I didn’t, because the violin is (like you described) my best friend, and despite the complications we still go through, I love the violin. So, thank you for posting this video and showing the reality behind the bright stage lights and smiles.
Yeahhh I needed this
Thank you for sharing ♡♡♡ I need to know the people I admire struggle too, though I hate the fact that you struggle♡

Good on you for filming this and putting it out.
this literally made my cry youre so inspiring!!!!
Thank you for sharing this! It was really quite powerful and encouraging!
Wow this must have been a nightmare to edit down.
This was so inspiring for me! I hope you get rest...
Your honesty is really heartwarming.
I've been watching you probably since you were 20... you only get more and more incredible. I've tried to pick up a few instruments over the years, but I finally bought ( and am learning) an ocarina 4 months ago. This was encouraging to me.
Thank you for sharing this with us. It was such a journey and makes me really feel as if my own musical struggles are valid.
The timing… I’m so incredibly glad I came across this now. You told me everything I needed to hear.
Now I feel those fires stirring. Thank you. Truly. This was so validating and such a great pep talk, ha! Even if I’m two years late to the discussion. 😅 (for what it’s worth, as I’ve been catching up on your work this past month, you’ve improved and have come sooooo far. Proud of you- I hope you are, too!)
loving coming back to this and hearing you practice your song "between us and them"
Thanks for sharing this, I found the motivation to practice again after days of feeling blue. God bless you, Malinda!
I know you’re an experienced CZcamsr by this point, but you consistently amaze me with the confidence you exude on camera. I’d love to see a video more about your experience being self-taught on piano, as I’m in that boat as well
it's our struggles that make us stronger. we also draw strength from our failures more than our successes. so, struggle and fail away, you'll be better coming out the other side.
Thank u Mallinda, I just wanted u to know that u r one of my greatest inspirations, either towards music or just daily issues and stuff.
Ur strong, caring, not afraid to show who u really r (or actually scared but posts this stuff anywayz) and ur not not flawless, ur not perfect and u show how it is not being perfect and how u like to not be perfect, u show ur successes, ur failures, ur tips and learnings, and I think that's beautiful.
I'm currently learning the violin (it's my second year, yay!) and ur videos show me so much inspiration and things that I really want to put on my playing and my studying and practicing and I love u so so much Malinda!!
(Sorry for the big text tho hehe)
2:38 literally me everyday day when I wake up, everyday day blurs into one another and I loose track of what week day it is
My family just gave me their piano and we moved it to my house. I'm starting to practice and I haven't played piano in YEARS and it shows. It's really hard reminding myself to slow down and work one small piece at a time. However watching this did remind me that I should incorporate scales into my practice if I want to get better again. Thanks for doing this!
Thank you for sharing this Malinda. Seeing that you aren't always a perfect musical goddess makes me feel that perhaps I could get somewhere if I went back to music (no formal background, just that I taught myself how to play a bit as a teenager and composed/recorded a few little tunes). P.S. Beautiful trousers and I love your musical mask!
You are real and honest, which makes you one of my favourite people in the world 💖
Goes into the "get a teacher" and "be social" categories, but practice close to somebody who is also practicing the same or something similar (i.e. music). You'll be able to discuss your struggles and epiphanies during your practice over lunch and other breaks. The learning opportunities are immense.
Great video! I find it helps to learn a song or difficult parts and for me if I sleep on it and come back to it the next day the motor skills come a lot easier!

I'm very grateful for this as a beginner. ♥ from Jamaica
This was motivational. I have been trying to self-learn the guitar, harmonica, and this piano app on my phone. All I wanted to do was write down tunes I had in my head, but learning bits and pieces from different people and different places, and not learning much of anything, I didn't really know where to start, or how to continue. Time to try getting back into it I think.
This was so inspiring aaaaaaa
Malinda, you are literally the only girl worth simping for. You are amazimg and I am still looking forward to more videos
You are so wonderful ❤
Thank you for sharing.
Due to my autism I'm not capable of practicing anything for extended periods. I completely lock up and can't do anything anymore if I try. Downside of this is that I need more time to learn something than I really should. Upside is that I just switch to something else to practice. By now I can play 12 or 13 instruments reasonably :p Apart from the trumpet, they're all self taught.
And then the depression hit hard. Not able to practice anything really, so I decided to build an electric guitar, just for a change. It's not finished yet (for reasons...) but I have meds now that work somewhat, so I'm back to practicing instruments again.
Really wish I had an Irish flute though, I LOVE the sound! And I learned the flute literally in about 30 minutes, so I'm confident that I can learn Irish flute too. Might take me a bit longer though :p
LOVE your music, your voice and your translate video's. Still want to cover "unavailable" but my mind has to work a bit better for that... Keep posting those video's!
malinda inspires me
It's not how much you practice. It's how good and effective you practice.
I think I know why, in part, I'm good at exactly nothing. I can't imagine spending a 12hr day working on something, no matter how much I like it. Good on you doing what you feel you need to do to keep growing and improving.
Thank you for being so honest! I don't know how to play any instruments (I took a beginning piano class in college but I'm pretty sure I forgot it all) but I am in a similar state with my writing. I've been writing seriously on and off since I was 12, and I'm 36 now, so I figured I'd be an expert by now. I think I'm better than I was at 12 for sure, and even better than I was 5 years or 10 years ago, but I know I'm still a beginner and it's so frustrating. That my day job is pretty brain-numbing (and has an inconsistent work schedule) doesn't help. Plus my work hours have increased dramatically this year cause of COVID (I work at a grocery store so I'm essential), and that plus just general COVID stress has made me feel less creative than ever.
Going into 2021 I think I'm going to change things up. I'm almost through my backlog of novel WIPs, so I think I'm going to try some new stuff, like improve my short story skills, try writing poetry again, absorb stories by actually attacking my streaming queues and TBR piles, that sort of thing. I think I'm also going to not do NaNoWriMo next year, cause I've done it 8 years in a row and I need a break.
Please can you do a video on tips for playing the piano, like how to remember scales easily or how to sight read better
‘Malinda’s tips for practicing...so that you may watch me not use them’ this right here is why I subscribed
Yeah, we need your solo on Irish flute now!
