Batman The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 "I'm not finished yet"

- This is perhaps one of the best scenes in all of the batman-lore that best describes the character.
In "The Dark Knight Returns" after being overwhelmed by the mutant leader, Bruce ventures deep into the batcave to regain his strength.
"Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young."
Yes sir
sheesh
Heartattacks, cancer, car crashes.. These things will never bother one with a death wish, trust when you want to die your fucking invulnerable
This is why “old Batman” is my favourite interpretation.
Yes sir
"I'm not finished yet".... a quote that can serve all of us at different points in our lives
"Sir, may I clear your plate?"
~batman voice~"I'M NOT FINISHED YET"
Makes me cry
“...and you’re not finished with me.” Oh, man! Goosebumps. 🤓😁
...........in bed 😳
U
- Where did he go?
- To find his strength...
-where are you?

This is hands down my favorite Batman scene of all time. I actually teared up when I watched this. I'm so glad to see other people get this. Batman is borderline insane. Its what compels a man to come from the brink of death, and then willingly reinvite himself back to it.
Batman is a creation of Bruce's warped psyche, and it will forever compel him to return to the mantle. I'd like to think that Bruce has had this conversation in his head THOUSANDS of times before. Bruce possesses more than just will power. Will power, no matter how strong, will fade. Bruce acts in a manner which transcends that. He is afflicted, almost as if he had a disease forcing him into this life.
He is a multi-billionaire. He has friends and loved ones. He has many admirers - both of Bruce and Batman. Yet he has always turns his back on all of this, in favor of isolation. There is NO amount of will power on earth that could keep a man from these distractions as long as Bruce has. His actions are NOT the behavior of someone operating solely on will power. It's the behavior of someone who is tormented.
Damn that's an amazing synopsis and it really does capture Bruce batman Wayne perfectly lol
Well said
I can almost imagine you saying those deep things with that parody of batman's voice
I think it is easy to categorize Batman as insane and while some his behavior does border on the extreme, I feel it does disservice to the character to simply call it an obsession or compulsion. The thing is Batman makes the choice consciously, he makes the choice to put on the suit and go out every night despite being beaten to pulp. It's because he feels that he's making a difference; if he can save one innocent life from being killed, it was all worth it. It's one thing to blindly act without thinking, it's entirely another to devote yourself forever to a higher cause.
vars28 Sure, but the video makes it seem like he hasn't a choice but to keep fighting, and that to an extent, he's not even in control of himself. Bruce desired to remain retired, but was dragged back into the streets of Gotham by his "true" self. And I honestly think he couldn't stop fighting against crime even if he wanted to, and that by definition would make him obsessive compulsive.
At this point he's older than his parents, but their deaths still haunt him. It shows that he will never get over their demise.
And he shouldn’t. That trauma, anger and vengeance is what drives Batman. And because of that, so many people live. And Gotham is safer.
If I was a time traveller and had a choice to prevent their deaths, I wouldn’t.
It's not just about the parent's death. He changed completely because of that incident. A new identity born inside him at a young age. Batman is his true identity not Bruce wayne. After retiring he went back to playing as Bruce wayne but he can't hide behind that fake identity for long. Which is why he says "I'm not finished yet". The bat represents vengence and his fight for justice. That's why he says looking at the bat, "you are never finished with me".
"I'm older now than my father ever was."
Reminds me of the Batman Beyond pilot where Terry is trying to convince Bruce to let him use the Batsuit to go over the men who killed his father by bringing up Bruce's own loss. The man was 70 and his parents ' death still haunts the man.
Batman will......
Peter Weller did an amazing job voicing an older batman!
He does really actually sound like old Bruce
Robocop?

I love the way he says "where..are..you?" Like he's legitimately looking for himself out there. Then he begins to find the clarity he needs to once again find himself. Such an underrated movie, and scene.
This is the best Batman movie ever made.

@@Bat-talk The Dark Knight Returns is hands down the best one....due to so many reasons....
Dc should have built BvS around this storyline
As someone with Bipolar Disorder this film may have changed my life. My entire existence I've suffered from anxiety and depression. I thought the best way to treat these conditions was to remove myself from things involving risk and danger. I thought it would go away or at least diminish over time. Of course it didn't. This scene made me realize that instead of avoiding situations that made me anxious, I instead had to actively seek them out as much as possible until I desensitized myself. Now in situations involving risk I no longer feel the crippling stranglehold of anxiety, but rather the rush of excitement that comes from confronting the unknown.
Well said.
This made me tear up reading. I had the same realization recently and it's helped me regain a large part of my life. To hear this kind of overlap within comic book fans is wonderful; great comment.
Wow...good for you brother
@Joe Figueroa that is extremely true. All those can make you stronger if you know how to use it.
This is Nietzsche's philosophy. Live dangerously
Such an inspiring scene. This is why we love Batman. He's human. No powers. Deeply scarred by childhood trauma. But maintains an unwavering commitment to do what's right and never, ever, ever give up.
This movie is one of the best batman movies ever , animated or not it totally captures the mindset of Bruce and really puts you in his head.
You have to read the comic. As Epic as this movie is, in the comic actually everything is commented by Batmans thoughts while doing it
@@ocean7849 You don't need everything "commented" out at all, you need subtly and nuanced which the movie doesn't brilliantly towards batman and story. The movie is WAY better than the comic by telling a story with pure visuals and music instead of a ridiculous amount of words that spell out the story for you.
@@Gadget-Walkmen I disagree. The book has a lot more story to it and reading Bruce’s thought process and and comments just make pulls you into all the action and gives you a raw psychological character study of him and his mental state. Also to add to that there’s just a really wet uncomfortable feeling I get reading the book rather than watching the movie, like idk I could feel that Frank Miller wrote this every night coming back from somewhere he nearly got mugged. Very unnerving, uneasy feeling it gives off. Chilling.
@@Lite727 I get where your coming from but some thing just don’t need too much words to describe them and you can understand it just from visuals and music.
The book doesn’t have more “story” to it at all, it’s the same. It’s just that the book has a lot more exposition and narrating to tell the reader what’s going on.
@@ocean7849 what's the name of the comic
This is when Bruce Wayne dies, after giving himself fully to Batman. After this Bruce Wayne no longer exists.
Bruce Wayne died along with his parents.
Bruce Wayne is the mask. Batman is his true self
Batman becomes a joestar
Batman,Superman, and Wonder Woman held the lasso of truth and were asked to reveal their identity
Superman says Clark kent of krypton
Wonder Woman says Diana prince
And Batman
Says Batman while being unable to lie
Bruce Wayne was a part that always lingered, he was a vessel for the Batman. He tried for years to play the persona, and only gave in to the Batman at night. This scene is when he finally fully becomes Batman, and the alter ego Bruce Wayne is gone forever.
The line “you’re never finished with me” puts a grin on my face every time I hear it
I was 8 when I looked down at my dad like this. Very powerful scene and very honest.
You can grow but the roots run deeper.
I’m really sorry man. May the strength be with you always.
I hope you the best buddy! God bless you 🦇
I love the smile at the end, it's as if bruce doesn't want to retire
The bat flying towards him, screaming like, "Nothing is over! Nothing!"
He doesn’t. He needs his vengeance.
There’s just something about this scene that gets me. A beaten, battered, broken, old and naked Bruce Wayne dwelling in the depths of the bat cave trying to find his strength. Powerful stuff!
Something shuffles, out of sight...
...Something sucks the stale air...
And hisses.
Gliding with ancient grace...
Eyes gleaming, untouched by love or joy or sorrow...
Breath hot with the taste of fallen foes... The stench of dead things, damned things
Surely the fiercest survivor... the purest warrior...
Glaring, hating...
...Claiming me as your own.

That was most excellent. I tip my hat to you good sir.
Its from the Dark Knight Returns graphic novel.
Liam Prendergast Everyone thinks he wrote this lol barely anyone realises this is from the comic
graceful and well deserved. I tip my hat to thee, old chum
That little funeral part when you see everyone is there but they all disappear and Bruce is alone is so poignant. I don’t care if you’ve lost one parent or both. It’s so relatable. It’s so dark and sad but we go through it. I’m no Batman but stuff like this is why he will always be hands down my favourite
This is a deep scene. I love how he knows that the Spirit of The Batman isn't erasable....
It's Immortal in the essence of Bruce Wayne
Never in my life would i have thought that an animated movie about a guy dressing up as a bat would help me so much in my saddest and difficult moments of my life.
Sometimes I feel overwhelmed by life and sometimes something bad happens to me and life knocks me down, i then play and listen to this scene, it does not make me forget my problems it gives me courage to face them. Helps me to keep going.
I know the man is mortal, but god damn that was just bad ass!
Remember even Superman said that Bruce's willpower alone is such a scary strength
What? Plenty of mortals are badass. You act like this is an absurd concept.

It's been two years....what happened? Did you win?
What many people don't realise is all of the Batman villains are somehow, part of Batman's own personality atleast that's how the writer's have conceived them. Joker, Two-Face, Mr.Freeze, Bane have all had personal loss of some sort, and Batman could have easily turned out like one of them, had he let his hatred and vengeance consume him. This is why Batman has a strict no-killing rule, because that's what separating him from the rest of crazy folk in Gotham.
what separates him is that he's a hero not his no killing code, because his no killing code cost Jason and many more people their lifes.
+anas 233 Na I'm pretty sure it's the no killing rule as it defines him and the difference between him and the villains
Andres Almonte what defines him is that he's a near superhuman rich genius superhero, and what defines him also is his obsession with justice, batman killed alot, directly or not directly, the no killing code has only been focused on in the last 20 to 30 years.
+anas 233 Jason got killed because still felt like it was a game.
+anas 233 Jason got killed because still felt like it was a game.
This is easily the most underrated and under appreciated film of all time. The Dark Knight Returns is just different.
This scene alone illustrates how Batman is the greatest superhero of all time.
As an introvert this has become the greatest scene from any media. My beaten intovert self trying to bring out my extrovert side to interact with more new people.

Awwwwwwwww so bad ass arent you
This is gonna sound really cheesy and hella cringe but it’s just the truth just bear with me. When ever I’m at my lowest moment and dark thoughts start to cloud my mind, whenever I feel so down bad and my mind rots with depression and anxiety I literally think of this scene, the music especially. I ask myself ‘What would Batman do’. This scene makes me stronger because I think to myself someone like Bruce Wayne in this situation has every reason to quit. He’s nearly 60 years old, an alcoholic, his son died in his arms after getting tortured and blown up by the Joker, his superhero friends all abandoned him, he just ass kicked by some amateur street punk half his age, got beat to shit and humiliated, a little girl had to save him on top of that an army of edgy street punks are coming to lay siege to his city with military grade weapons enough to take on the fucking national guard. How easy would it have been just to lose all hope and call it quits and just die peacefully in that cave. Return to the dirt and be reunited with his mother and father once again in a better place. How easy would it have been to just drop there right on the floor and give up. How easy would it have been to succumb to his painful injuries (my guy took a fucking knee to the mouth 😬 and and shoulder chomped off with pointy grills). How goddamn easy would it have been just to curl up and cry after getting his 60 year old ass humiliated by a millennial? Through and through it all he kept pushing. He looked to the darkness to find his childhood terror. To remember the thing he is. The nightmare. The myth. The monster. The very reason the filth that plagues his city breath easier during hours of daylight. The horrifying thing that this world gave birth to the moment those pearls fell to the floor in crime alley. He remembers who is, what he is. He finds his strength in the cave, and regains the will to fight again. This scene is the single most powerful Batman moment in all of his history and lore since goddamn May 27 1939 through August 18 2021 the time of me writing this comment and it will years to come and onwards. This scene is the ultimate motivation and the greatest demonstration of Batman’s sheer will power there will ever be. Beautiful scene. These two films are nothing short of masterpiece. 👌🏾
No shame in that. It just means they did a good job and inspired you.
But, yeah. Possibly the best Batman movie ever.
By movie, I mean both parts.
I just bought the Blu-ray with the commentary.
I think Bruce somehow sees the bat as a symbol of his parents dying.
Because HE'S absolutely terrified of it, he does the best thing you can do. Become what you fear.
When he says, "You're never finished with me," he's telling the bat that he won't succumb to Insanity.
Peter Weller and Michael Emerson were brilliant.
They didn't just imitate Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill.
They made it their own. Remember. This is a different universe that the Animated Series.

I have to say as much of a masterpiece Christopher Nolan created I don’t think either one of his movies touched me this emotionally. This scene is so powerful and moving and good god that score. Forget Junkie XL, give Christopher Drake a shot in the DCEU.
In my darkest time, I had both Batman and Joker.
My mentality was always shuffling between these two.
But, after watching this movie a few time, I decided to go with Batman. Being good even after being brutally broken seemed to be the right path to me. And, thankfully, I wasn't wrong.
So, thank you to all the artists and thank you, Batman.
You'll always hold a special place in my heart.
I’m proud of you. Good job soldier.
The joker is garbage, at times it is enticing to lose all control and sink in chaos. But it is way cooler to embrace the darkness and use it to do good, rather than as an excuse.
Not to come across as rude, but that's both edgy and cringy at the same time.
"You're never finished with me" as i start up the arkham series for the 30 something-th time and im not exaggerating

when he say "where are you" is like as if he's looking for himself
I’ll come back to get motivation every once in a while
People don't seem to get the fact that Bruce is as insane as the Joker. Bruce's mental illness compels him to almost involuntarily persue his insane idea of justice as Batman. Yes, his idea in itself is insane and short-sighted. Dressing up as a giant bat and beating people up In the middle of the god damn night is insane....he would do better to promote education and small businesses with his wealth for LONG TERM CHANGE but instead he does this.
This is what makes Batman such an interesting character.
thank you doctor bartholemew. same time tomorrow? 😁
Please Matt Reeves, please please please please use this comic/movie/story as a inspiration for your upcoming Batman movie. Zack Snyder started with the Frank Miller inspired Batman, you need to keep that going. Show us how he got so brute, how much mental pain and stress it brings to Bruce being Batman for so many years. Show us WHY Batman is so awesome. Show that Bruce Wayne is "a hollow shell, a rusty trap" and Batman is the only thing that keeps him from going crazy.

Best moment in batman history
True inspiration by my favourite character of all time. This scene help me in a very difficult situation... Thanks Mr. Miller...
At this moment I finally realize, how absolutely insane batman is. Staring at a glowing bat, whispering ur not done with me. Coo coo
Little did u kno,the Bat God is real,so this is probably him
This might actually be my favorite movie scene. goosebumps!
I rewatched this movie recently. And this scene reminded me of a one shot I'd read some years ago, 'Batman: Ego'.
It deals with much the same topic. Of the fractured psyche of Batman, and the darkness that he keeps contained with iron will. As to how he learned to harness it, to not give into insanity, and serve the higher purpose, or justice and preservation of life.
A short story, but nonetheless quite telling as to why writers adore the dark knight as a character.
This is still a top 10 Batman scene in my eyes.
I want everyone to take a full minute to appreciate the fact it's none other than Peter Weller aka Robocop who is voicing the Legendary Dark Knight.
THIS. is what it takes for a man to be a superhero. No powers. Sheer will and affliction.
I just wish there was, more of that batman...he defines the batman that is what i like about this batman.
Bruce Wayne and Batman having a conversation
Peter weller's batman voice is one of the most underrated....
this scene must be really deep enough that I cannot understand it. Batman is smiling in a wicked manner like Joker. Batman doesn't smile much.
I think Bruce is talking to his Batman alter ego. No matter how beaten and broken he may be, the Batman will never stop, he'll never be done acting through Bruce until it gets him killed for good, and that's why Alfred's always commenting on how suicidal his behavior is. As for why he's smiling, I think it might be him coming to term with the fact that they are one and the same; he and Batman.
+Francis Lafontaine. É. So it means the one who is speaking is actually Batman(as if a ghost has taken over Bruce Wayne's body)? At first I thought Bruce is talking to the Bat or to the darkness
don fan Bruce is talking to the bat as far as I understand, it seem to be the same style of bat-apparition that 'broke through his window' when he was having the visions of his dead parents and hearing the voice of Batman in his head.
What I gather from this here monologue is he's saying he isn't finished yet (finished like defeated) and that the Batman must go back into the fray. It's not so much that Batman possesses Bruce, but it's more like some people say; Bruce Wayne is the mask Batman wears, and not the other way around.
that's because the batman personality the craving for vengeance in him still boils even though bruce tried to keep him locked away like a bad memory and the here we see batman escaping taking over telling that bruce he is nothing but an empty hollow shell.
The ancient Bat creatures is part of his origin, it gives him strength
I love that background music! Has that ever been released as an individual soundtrack?
CCSMediaDesign Yes and it's called "Your never finished with me".

All that is thanks to the immeasurably talented and criminally underrated Christopher Drake. He also did the Arkham Origins Soundtrack if you didn't already know.
You can even hear some of the melodies in this film carried across to Origins.
I love that Miller gave us two iconic stories of his beginning and his later life as Batman. With both Year One and Dark Knight Returns
This movie/comic book is top notch. One of the best ever made alongside Watchmen.
''Where are you?'' ...
Bruce is seeking for the Batman.
Both of the Dark Knight animated movies were just awesome, the music the story the whole concept of these movies was just awesome
I need to point out the soundtrack here. I would say the soundtrack makes this movie 10x better than it already is.
if anyone wants to understand batman as a character this is for sure the movie they should watch. I re-read the comic recently and saw that he never really says the "you're never finished with me" part but god damn does it add to the scene. Movies should really take note, you can add things to your movie that isnt in the comic and it can still be good
Up until this point in the movie, he wasn't batman. Batman was long since dead. He was just an old man in a costume.
Here he embraced his darkness once more. Batman was reborn

Love this scene and the implications of Batman's mental issues
He for sure has schizophrenia I'd wager. But it's a means for him to cope with his loss and trauma over his life.
In a way, this scene's brilliant. All kudos to Frank Miller.
Ben Affleck did a great job playing Batman that was inspired by dark knight returns. he had more of the grizzled seasoned, broody that others didn't have. even frank miller himself said he thought Ben Affleck did a great job representing the character.
Kevin Jimenez he did do a good job but fuck was that movie just bad.
Ben Affleck's Batman has less than nothing to do with The Dark Knight Returns version of Batman. Batman in The Dark Knight Returns was still the same Batman we all know. He was just old. He still believed in compassion and morals and was against murder. Ben Affleck's Batman was the opposite of that.
I'm the surgeon no
