In Thailand, we have first name , last name, and nickname. Only first name and last name that are recorded in civil registration or identification card. most of Thai first name and last name isn't Thai language.... most is Sanskrit language because of the influence of culture/religion from India. So most of our first name and last name is a bit too difficult to call each other in daily life. It's easiler to call each other by their nickname. Nickname can be anything that doesn't have bad meaning and can be any language such as ส้ม(thai language means orange) ฟ้า(thai language means sky) Bank Bright New Earth Smile etc. Newyear and Both are their nickname. I think Newyear's mother name him Newyear because he born in 1 Jan.
Thai culture, We shouldn't call the people who older than us by their name only because it won't polite. It's something about senior issue. We should add 'word' before senior's name. The word may P'xxx(=older brother/sister) ป้าxxx(aunt) ลุงxxx(uncle) ยายxxx(granma) although they're not our real relative. but to call people who younger, It's ok to call by their name only. Or if you put word Nongxxx(younger brother/sister), It's make the calling sound more cute and adorable.
