I love you Roy Jones Jr. You may not remember me but I used to work across the street from the nightclub in Pensacola FL you had. That's where I met you and your family. God bless 🙏❤️😘 And Mike Tyson should have lost that fight.
Roy Jones Jr said he’s almost done with boxing. This was on January 9, 1999. He ended up staying way too long till 2018 and added 8 ugly losses to his record.
larry does a great job of asking cocky boxers some tough questions which challenge their ego's. Most interviewers act sycophantic to them, especially if they're black.
Without saying his name, Larry Merchant mentions that Roy Jones Jr.’s next mandatory WBA opponent is from Argentina. It’s unrelated to the 1613 CHESTnut address, but the fighter he referenced, Dario WALTER Matteoni, turned 45 years old the day some grannies expired: 08/31/05. Unrelated to calZAGhe: Jones ultimately never fought MATTeoni, but next fought REGGIE Johnson, the first guy shown on the prospects graphic (01681874 incarcerated in Texas at HAMilTON-200 LEE Morrison Lane, bRYAN, TX 77807)
You can only beat who's in front of you. If you clean out your division and beat all the best fighters available, like Klitschko and Ward both have, that's all anyone can ever ask of you. How is Ward a hype job? He entered that Super 6 tournament and won the thing. Then he turned around and beat Dawson. When his shoulder heals, I'd like to see him fight Golovkin, that would be a great fight too.
You know what's funny? At 2:15 they show those guys that they wanted him to fight. Well he beat Johnson and Telesco, yet everybody called them bums cuz he beat them easy as shit. Roy never got credit in his prime cuz he made that shit look easy as hell. As far as Dariusz goes, he never wanted to come to America and back in the 90's, America was where the money was at so that's on him.
In his 1/9/99 post-fight interview, HBO’s Larry Merchant running down potential Roy Jones Jr. opponents and saying the name of German-POLISH boxer Dariusz MICHAELcZEWSKI at precisely 2:13 is unrelated to KRZYness or the 2/13 birth (1947) of POLISH-American Duke Univ. (durHAM, NC) men’s & U.S. OLYMPIC basketball coach MICHAEL “Mike” KrzyZEWSKI. The graphic showing David TELESCo after MICHAELcZEWSKI could evoke the long view, not of history, but of the TELESCopE. Once again, Calslappy fought a 40 year old jones who was a 3-to-1 underdog because he hadn't had a single good performance in over 5 years, after slowing tremendously which lead to him being brutally KO'd multiple times and being forced into retirement Roy beat prime Reggie "I never ducked nobody in my whole career...Steve Collins, if you really want this, find the money, make it worth my while and I will come wherever you are and tear your ass up. It's just that simple" - Roy Jones 2012
This fight was not just ordered by the WBC , it was ordered by RJJ himself , he was too busy strolling around with his paper Titles , fighting lesser Class Guys and cheating his own fans out of proper fights like this one . This fight was in Pensacola , his Home Town in a Venue which only held between 8 to 10K Fans and he couldn't even sell it out and it sold very few PPVs , and I applaud the Genuine Boxing fans for staying away and not purchasing his Junk PPVs as was so honestly put by HBO .
You can't tell me that you know that less about boxing and anatomie to understand the affect of this weight loss had?? Also stop blaming him for losing past his prime. He was unbeatable in his prime
you do knwo that roy was 4 years past his prime in that fight right? as joe said himself 1 year before the fight in his book. said roy was a shadow of his former self... yet we are meant to respect his win over roy 1 year later? plz..
Jones was scared of Collins AND Michalczewski, I can bet you that! Why? Coz he liked fighting cherry picked opponents and dancing around them, someone he could look good and flashy against. With Steve and Dariusz, he'd really have to FIGHT, no clowning, no dancing, coz every mistake he made could be his last, esp against Dariusz the ko artist. This is the only reason why I don't like Jones as much as I used to. He claimed he was the best and would beat anyone, but he DIDN'T fight EVERYONE.
Did Collins ever come to the States? Roy was the draw. I treat him just like I do Dariusz Michealewszki, he chose to stay in Germany is whole career. Calzaghe waited too long to come to the States too.
larry loves to put boxers down.. he loves to discount a win by saying they wasnt good anyway. its typical for sports commentators who wasnt a pro themself. its like the more you win the less credit you get from larry merchant.
@@seanhenderson8364 Jones didn't beat BHop in his Prime , nor did he take his Title , they actually fought for the Vacated IBF MW Title in 93 and BHop was 4-5 years away from his Prime , he developed as a much better fighter as he aged , he was also not a Top 5 Ranked MW back then and probably barely Top 10 as other MW Champions like Mc Clellan , the 2 Jackson's , Johnson and Nunn were all ranked ahead of him .

hahaha bro, you kiddin me? Steve retired to duck Calslappy, supposedly under doctor's orders, now he comes here to get in Roy's face? Like Roy is supposed to go "yeah, an unranked retired super middleweight who never made it in the US, that sounds like a really credible opponent!!!" because if Roy took the fight and stomped Collins, you totally wouldn't go "BUT THE WEIGHT WAS TOO MUCH, STEVE WAS OLD, ROY WOULD'VE GOT BEAT UP EARLIER" tool
Roy would have PLAYED with Collins. Anybody that thinks otherwise is just lying to themselves. He beat McCallum, Johnson(easily by the way), both beat collins. Is funny how Merchant adds collins and Collins is not even part of the 4 choices. Merchant never gave Roy his due. One of the best EVER!!!
Roy unified Lght Heavy division. Beat Johnson, Devalle, and McCallum for 3 main belts. So you're wrong. He attempted and did unify belts. He beat an undefeated James Toney who was in everyone's pound for pound list. If you check how many pound for pound boxers fought each other, I don't think there's that many if ar all. If Roy wasn't #1 maybe it was Toney?. Did you know he beat Sugar Boy Malinga who years later would beat Benn? You said he beat B level fighters, but I bet you he beat more future champions than anyone else you can think of. Definitely more than those fighters you said he ducked. He also beat Gonzalez, RIP, quite easily, who years later would beat Michaelczchi. Easily too. So is not "debate", these are FACTS!!!!-. Know them before you start saying people don't know anything.
@@xeniadiaz6457 If you consider Jones as an Undisputed LHW Champion, that's fair enough as he was , by cheating Rocchigiani out of his WBC Title which he won after beating Nunn in March 98 , after Jones had vacated it to avoid Nunn , he was handed the WBC Strap twice for free , yes free , in 96 , he was declared New WBC Champion after beating a 40 years old Mike Mc Callum , who wasn't even Champion , Tiozo was . Jones also got to win his WBA and IBF Straps in 98 v Delvalle and 99 from an old way past his best Reg Johnson because they were stolen from the True Legitimate Champion , Darius Michalczewski who won the IBF , WBA and Lineal Titles from Virgil Hill in 97 , to add to his WBO Title , which he held since 93 . The facts are that the WBA , WBC and IBF , screwed and stole Michalczewski and Rocky's Titles from them , not even allowing them to defend them Titles and Jones didn't even have the Honor or dignity to fight them . In 2003 Rocky proved he'd been screwed and cheated out of his Title in a Court of Law in NY City , which awarded him over 30 Million Dollars against the cheating and disgusting WBC but would settle for less as they were crying Poverty but most Crucial and importantly , the Judge reinstated him as the Legitimate WBC LHW Champion and even backdated his Reign to March 98 until April 00 , where he lost to Michalczewski , thus rendering the Childish , cheating Jones's false claims to be Undisputed and also rendered his WBC LHW Title Reign during this period as Null and Void , and a joke , which it was .
jones was afraid its clear to see here he couldnt even look at collins! never mind talk back to him! he ducked collins! collins at 48 called him out again if his gonna talk shit!
we own boxing look at heavyweight andre ward aint shit khan is gonna fuck garcia up ina rematch! but i hope danny ko s him! loook at sergio martines no american can beat him!
He didnt beat the shit out of eubank, eubank was robbed in those decision in my opinion. Benn was exposed by Collins. Benn was never that great, he was overhyped. Collins style was far too ugly for the states and he never looked great in his wins. Collins was easily outpointed by Mike Mcallum and Mike Mcallum was easily outpointed by Roy Jones. I reckon Jones in 96 was far too strong for Collins. Eubank might've stood a chance if he upped his work rate and was not robbed against collins.
All due respect to Collins, But he's lying. He was offered the fight w/ Roy and HE turned it down. It's on CZcams. And to that person who said Roy never unified. You're wrong!!!. He unified Lt. Heavyweight. And along the way beat fighters who beat Collins -- Johnson and McCallum. Roy would have toyed with him!!
Jones was never Undisputed at MW, he held 1 Strap for 18 months , in this period, Mc Clellan held 2 Straps , why no Unification Bout? The Gman beat Jones in a tough fight at Amateur level and Jones seemingly admitted , he didn't want to fight him at Professional level. When Gerald lost to Benn, who could hit big, at SMW, can you imagine the shock waves this sent through the Jones Camp? After Collins had beaten Eubank 2 , and deservedly, especially the 2nd fight, he really bullied Benn twice, who wasn't the same fighter but retained all his power and hit Collins numerous times with some thunderous hooks flush on the chin and barely rocked him, these events would have been taken into serious account by the Jones camp also. When Roy became SMW by beating the Excellent J Toney, he would fight 6 more times at this Weight V lesser Class opponents and wouldn't Unify this Division either. Liles, Benn, Eubank and Collins, all held a SMW Belts around this time, why no desire by Roy to Unify? He was Big Business back then , with a massive contract with HBO and a very good Team of trainers and Advisors , who would have picked the bones out of the events surrounding the fights I mentioned earlier, and advised Jones not to fight Collins , who would have given him a harder night than you think.
I said he was undisputed at Light Heavyweight not those other 2 weights. And you speak a lot of conjecture. " He was advised " How do you know? What is a fact is that Larry Merchant, who has never liked Roy, said " Steve Collins and Steve Liles Turned Down fights with Roy" He said this before the 1st Montel Griffin fight. That's a fact. Not " he was advised not to fight Benn, Collins or whoever else. Roy fought everyone. I can't believe anyone would actually believe Collins had a chance. Look it up it's on CZcams. Roy = G.o.a.T!!!
@@erubey8909 Sorry mate, I actually meant them comments to someone else, and was referring to Jones's career at MW and SMW, Divisions he never Unified. Collins started calling him out in 95, after his 2nd defeat of Eubank and again the following year, after the Benn fights. Considering the talent he had, do you not find it a bit strange, that he never seemed to aspire to be the Best, MW, and SMW, of them all back then, and he called the shots, you have to admit this, he fought who he wanted V lesser Class opponents. He is 1 of the the Greatest P4P lads for sure but not MW and I consider Calzaghe as the Goat of SMWs, because he came closest to Unifying it. Johnson and Mc Callum, who beat Collins in 92 and 90, were way better back then, than they were when they fought Jones, especially Mc Callum, who was 40, and Collins improved big time as he got older. It's a shame back then that a lot of Guys seemed more interested in protecting their 0s instead of actually fighting each other and there are lots of Guys who avoided each other including Collins and Jones and if they try to deny this, they are lying. The only Guy who avoided nobody, was Mike Mc Callum.
No need to apologize. Everyone has their favorite. I like to go by facts too though. Roy didn't say Liles and Collins refused fights with him, Larry Merchant said it. Those are facts!!!. Collins could say anything he wants but again I go by Facts. And Calzaghe best S.Middleweight? Not mine. He fought a past his prime Roy. Even he will admit that. A guy that started at jr. Middleweight going up to Heavyweight!!!. If that's not courage, I don't know what is.
Collins was never in the same sentence as Jones He came to america to make a name for himself. What happened? He was easily beaten by McCallum and Reggie Johnson. He was incapable of winning a title in america. So he ran back to Europe where the competition is much lower quality, and beat an old Eubank and an even older Benn. And those are the ONLY wins of note on his entire fucking record. Then he retired in 1997 to duck Calzaghe. Then in 99 he wants to fight P4P best Roy? LMAO keep dreaming
Look at the 4 guys in the graphic at 2:12 Reggie Johnson, Bernard Hopkins, Dariusz Michalczewski, and David Telesco those were the LHWs people wanted Roy to fight after this Rick Frazier fight Roy had already beaten Hopkins 6 years prior at MW and wanted a 60-40 split for a rematch which B-Hop refused. Darius refused to come to america (typical european bum) Roy beat Reggie Johnson and David Telesco in his 2 fights immediately after this and Reggie beat Collins before that LMFAO Roy wins
Going by your logic calzaghe beat jones so there for he can beat every1 jones could sorry he didnt just beat jones he made jones his bitch! look at round 2 he stood in the pocket and laughed at jones! Calzaghe better than jones :)
There was a good pre-fight scene of Calzaghe with his sons playing "Fight Night" and Calzaghe's sons voice their concerns over Roy Jones and Calzaghe tells them not to worry because he has diminished and is no longer the fighter he once was. This aired before the Calzaghe-Jones fight. Be realistic.
The greatest of all times Roy Jones jr.

@Jairzinho121 roy easily outpointed a hundred year old mcallum.
we own boxing look at heavyweight andre ward aint shit khan is gonna fuck garcia up ina rematch! but i hope danny ko s him! loook at sergio martines no american can beat him!
Eubank might've stood a chance if he upped his work rate and was not robbed against collins.
wards another product of "america fuck yeah" hype train
Oh and where did Jones "admit" he didn't want to fight McClellan!!!??? I have NEVer seen that!!!
Collins was never in the same sentence as Jones
He came to america to make a name for himself.
He said it because Collins was there, nobody wanted to see it in reality.
I love it when I watch calzaghe beat roy :)
and lacey and Bernard haha its fucking great tbh
They were last there prime idiot if you know boxing roy wanted cal before he fought Ruiz and before he fought starved the first time know your boxing
chris clarkey Why ? Cause Calzaghe is your colour ? Where the fuck does Calzaghe even slate into this video ?
Sean Henderson Roy was the only one who was past his prime
Look at the 4 guys in the graphic at 2:12
Reggie Johnson, Bernard Hopkins, Dariusz Michalczewski, and David Telesco
those were the LHWs people wanted Roy to fight after this Rick Frazier fight
Roy had already beaten Hopkins 6 years prior at MW and wanted a 60-40 split for a rematch which B-Hop refused.
Darius refused to come to america (typical european bum)
Roy beat Reggie Johnson and David Telesco in his 2 fights immediately after this
and Reggie beat Collins before that LMFAO
Roy wins
Larry is terrible. Let the man talk.. To all journalists WE ARE NOT HERE FOR YOU!
he was scared of collins.
Be realistic.
martinez easy jones is the definition of overrated
