Today I want to show you how to setup your compressor for paint to get consistent air flow and never worry about your air pressure dropping while painting your project.
The people's champ does it again! Thanks for all the great videos. Unlike all the other channels that say "best small compressor at home spray guns", then run them off pro 60 gallon tanks you actually show how to run on a small tank. Top notch
Very tru I paint with a hf 29 gallon compressor haven't sprayed a entire car yet but it can handle what I use it for even with some expensive guns I have
I've restored three cars already with a 6 gallon pancake compressor. I spray the traditional acrylic lacquer for restoration purposes. I do one panel at a time. The entire paint job on any given car takes about seven days, as I spray it in sections. I know, the words "acrylic lacquer" is practically a swear word to today's painters, and painters who still use it are practically considered alien life forms. With acrylic lacquer, you can literally stop in the middle of a panel and continue painting the next day if you want. You have to cut-and-buff after you're finished, but I consider that "my therapy" :)
Thank you. This was what people don't understabd when they start painting.. What goes along with that is "while painting, don't let up on the trigger as you turn back for the next stroke." In your video when you let up on the trigger and the pressure goes up to like 60, the split second you pull the trigger, you will for a split second, get 60 psi at the nozzle instead of the 30 . You can hear this in your video. Each time you pull the triggeer, you can hear a RUSH of air. To correct this, when painting never let all the way off the trigger. Just relax the trigger at the end of a run, but keep the AIR flowing through the gun with out siphoning any paint.
First time painter, been watching your videos and purchasing products per your suggestions. Now its time to get to work... Excellent content for a novice to learn...keep em coming...thanks for the info
you explain things simply brilliantly!!! Of course the longer your air hose, you'll need slightly more air pressure coming out of the compressor. Also it prevents the compressor running all the time and some water separators have pressure limits. Also ensuring you have no air leaks between the compressor and the gun helps. Top job good sir!! Hello from Newcastle, Australia!!
I gotta be honest dude ..I'm about to attempt a paint job on a project car of mine and everyone thinks I'm crazy having never painted before ..BUT ..I've searched and watched damn near every video out there including yours ...YOU have inspired me to feel like I CAN do this ..I've learned more from your videos then most others and I thank you ! I'm attempting a little bit of a tough one a base coat with different color stripes over the car ..but I've got a good lvlp gun ..I've practiced and dialed it in ..A simple garage setup with 20 gallon tank ..I'm confident I can do this ..Thank you again for all your info ..I'm just waiting on warmer weather .

After watching videos for 2 years, I finally pulled the trigger (no pun intended) and painted two cars this year. Learned a lot. They both look awesome from 5 ft away. Success! Thanks again man. Best wishes to you.
This is pretty much exactly how I have mines setup , for consistent air flow. Dropping pressure is a big problem with smaller compressors with those bigger guns I use and this setup like this has helped dramatically. Good video brother

Great video man. You actually been in the trenches with the small compressor action. I've been painting cars for 25 years and half of this stuff I didn't even know so I'm learning as well. Especially before I go purchasing these LVLP guns. You really are the originator / Godfather of the small compressor, DIY ,LVLP in the CZcams space. Good work brother 👊🏼💯 salute champ 🏆
Thanks I'm a welder I usually paint my railings and gates that I make thanks for the information I've struggling with getting it done right thank you so much
Good gracious. Just set the tank at 90 and the gun at whatever you want it to be and call it a day. Also, need to make sure there is something to trap moisture NEAR THE GUN since those little compressors run hot and will put water in the air. I see you have a filter before the regulator so you are set.
Appreciate the info bro! I have a similar setup, with your thorough description of using a small compressor we can know get consistent air pressure and turn out some quality work.
Upking nice talk about air pressure well explained and simply explain especially when you spoke about loosing air if you got a long hose thank you upking
UPK, I appreciate the jewels you feeding the people. I am working with the same compressor and I was clueless about the set up; until I saw this video. Thank you! #1965Chevelle
Fantastic, I hope this may help with some of the issues I am having. I picked up the AeroPro r500 (on your recommendation, super happy with it) and am using a 21 gallon compressor. I had the knob on the air compressor maxed out and what would happen is when I pulled the trigger on the gun and set my pressure on the regulator it would be fine for awhile, but then the pressure would drop and I'd have to set the regulator again. I am hoping that by setting the compressor to just 20 or 30 pounds above what I want to paint at that it would give me more consistency. I just assumed the regulator would, you know, regulate it no matter what, but maybe I'm asking too much from it? Thank you for making these videos, awesome that you are willing to share your knowledge. :)
Although your paint work looks great as is, you might find a decent quality inline filter and a refrigerated dryer to improve your craft even further. I do compressed air systems for a living and service many body shops. When you’re not using clean intake air for the compressor and a consumer compressor like yours, you do have a much higher chance of air contamination from low quality intake filters. Also being you’re using an oil lubricated compressor you have the chance oil contamination in your air as well which can be difficult to remove even with your (assumed) filter dryer cartridge on the inlet of your gun. The refrigerated dryer obviously is to lower the dew point of the air in the line and remove almost all moisture content. You might have all these things and not have shown them but incase not it could be a good bit of knowledge for someone. Loved your tip here on air management to reduce compressor run time !
Thanks I appreciate you Robby and you’re absolutely right on everything you’re saying…I don’t have a inline filter system for my setup because it’s not my main setup for my shop, I actually have a filter setup for my paint booth and 80 gallon compressor that I use for the shop…I appreciate you for checking out the video and dropping some good information on me!

I wanted to see if you could please do a update video on your spectrum Black Widow sprayer see if it was a good investment see if you had to fix or replace anything on it
Thank you this video is very helpful. I like the way you take ur time to explain well in detail and the recap going over again not too many people do that, I appreciate you and I give u thumps up and I subscribed.
Thank you! This was the video I was asking for and you delivered. I appreciate you showing the people! Can this be done with a compressor with only one gauge? My small hotdog compressor only has one gauge on it.
So, I added a Steel Camel filter followed by a HF desiccant filter. The Steel Camel filter doesn't want more than 60psi. So I have the regulator set to that. After a 50 ft hose, gun regulator and a water/oil separator, I can't get more than about 20-22psi at the gun. I sprayed Nason Primer Surfacer with it, using a 1.7 tip and it seemed OK for that, but I'm worried about the actual paint. Going to email Steel Camel and see what they say.
@@UndergroundPaintKing I suspected as much. I might remove the desiccant filter if I need to. Pharraway has the Steel Camel filter in his setup and said the stuff after it wasn't really necessary but he already had it before adding the SC filter into the system. We'll see what they say.
I need some help. I have an lvlp with 3m pps system. Have had good luck until today. My inner liner is swelling up and then starts leaking... Plz help. Thanks for the good content

Hello paint king I have a question for you brother. I have a 20 gallon compressor and the paint gun I have is the r500 lvlp . Can this be done with a compressor with only one gauge? My small hotdog compressor only has one gauge on it.
You’re welcome Shiro I hope the info was helpful and you should be able to do the same with one gauge on your compressor
Excellent instruction
Thanks Gomer I appreciate you checking out the video and I hope it helps!
I have some diy painting experience but it never hurts to revisit the fundamentals!
@@Gomer8759 the fundamentals makes things a lot easier!
The more you add in the filtration system the more air you lose and that’s why I don’t go crazy with a filtration system on a small compressor setup
@@UndergroundPaintKing I suspected as much. I might remove the desiccant filter if I need to. Pharraway has the Steel Camel filter in his setup and said the stuff after it wasn't really necessary but he already had it before adding the SC filter into the system. We'll see what they say.
@@jayinmi3706 let me know what they say Jay!

I’m glad the video was helpful Natalie🙏🏽💯
Another great vid! Would you have a recommendation for a decent mini inline regulator at the gun that doesn't break the bank? The last one I had did not hold up to thinners all that well as the plastic view window hazed up. Cheers mate.
Thanks Michael, I appreciate you and a good one to get in my opinion is a 3m one but they run close to $40
@@UndergroundPaintKing thanks for that.
@@michaelking7495 you’re welcome!
