    My department does it different. When turning on our packs, we do it while the pack is still on the ground so we can see the dual side gauge. As we turn on our cylinders, we yell out our pressure. We also check for a seal when donning the facepiece and yell "Seal" if the seal is good. The last thing we do, is go on air. Gloves go on first, THEN air. You want to save as much air as possible. It's those few wasted breaths of air that you could end up needing to save your ass if things get hairy.

    • @robertarnold8631
      @robertarnold8631 Před 4 lety +5

      Terence Dangerfield those few breaths shouldn’t be in an idlh environment. You should be clear and out of building before your low air alarm sounds. Train hard and be safe.

      we had to do that as well. read the regulator, turn bottle on all the way open, test the pass device mask seal check, and mask stand by strap behind the head as well as donning the gear.

      @@NationalWolf correct.... However, a 2 minute-drill is different.
      A 2 minute-drill means being ready to fight fire in less than 2 minutes, which obviously includes being on air. At least that is how our academies teach it. It's the most non-practical drill out there in terms of having an actual use in field, but it is good at teaching muscle memory and PPE familiarization.
      There are differences in places. So I'm sure that some jurisdictions teach the drill differently than we do here. Doesn't mean that either is "wrong",. Just means difference in regions. Just like out West a "Tanker" is an aircraft and here in the Southeast, a Tanker is a fire apparatus.

    Always a good drill, especially if you don't don your gear every shift. It helps with staying familiar with your gear. I honestly haven't done a gear drill in a long time, but I put mine on every shift. 18 years in and I'm usually on the rig waiting on the rest of my crew. In order everytime: hood, pants, coat, radio strap, get in, SCBA (facepiece stays attached to LDV), TIC (lanyard on SCBA), helmet and tool (halligan) on exit. Mask goes on just before entry. Train like you fight!

    When we do it we have to do it in the most realistic order possible considering it's just a drill. When I do it I go this route: Pants > Nomex > Jacket > SCBA > Mask > Helmet > Gloves. We do it this way because over the time it takes to get to the call, thats usually the order it goes it, for example: you don't put your mask on outside of the truck at the station, you do that on scene. Just an FYI to make it a little more realistic.
