Kami Cotler, who played Elizabeth on The Waltons, sits at home and reminisces about the first Waltons episode aired.
Want to watch more of “The Waltons”? Check it out here: www.warnerbros...
Rarely do you see the reminiscing, commentary, and behind the scenes descriptions in a TV show or movie to the depth that Kami provides. I am grateful that she chose to share these with her fans and fans of The Waltons.
Couldn't say it better. The vast majority of us will never have your experience of working on a (classic) TV or movie set. Please share more of your reminiscences with us Kami. You do it so well.
Best regards,
M. (UK).
I hope there is a PART 100. I don't want these to end.
Seems like she could go on. It is all so detailed! Hope so!
She could go on to other episodes also because there obviously plenty more...there's if Kami would want to 😹😂😹
Thanks Kami, that was so interesting. Had no idea that you didn’t hear the audio from the radio, that’s some good acting but it must be weird to just start laughing on cue. Who knew ........
I was thinking the same thing!...lol. These are just so cool!
I am loving these memories. The way you deliver the stories makes me believe you must be an amazing teacher.
Explains things well and attention to detail!
Definitely explains like a teacher!! She invites you to be part of the experience, and doesn't talk down to you for not knowing it already.
@@chrisfriel6177 And I am amazed at how much she remembered and absorbed. Very interesting stuff. Of course, I love Details.
I agree! She must be an amazing teacher/principal!
You have an incredible memory, Kami! And you look so adorable sitting in the living room on Daddy's lap and taking this scene all in at the same time!
That's Charlotte Stewart who played Miss Beatle on Little House on the Prairie
I have read that also but I would never have recognized her!
I am a big fan of yours Kami. I am retired now, but I was an actor, a univ. prof, a drama critic, and in my youth I was a very successful opera singer in New York and elsewhere. I love the Waltons. I was born and raised in the country near the Ozark mountains to a very countryfied family :) I am always very impressed with how well you acted as a child. In fact all the children were good actors. I would bet you would be a very good person to interview. I have all the episodes and seasons and watch the Walrons every day. Sometimes I disagree with the writers or directors and wish that I could have done it.
Thank you. I think our show provided an opportunity for writers who grew up in rural communities to share their stories. There was/is so little that is made that portrays that part of American culture.
I’m 65 years old and still watch the Waltons every day during lunch! One of my favorite things is to look at all the props. I’m fascinated by 1930,1940’s dishes , pots, pans etc. This show was so authentic! Thanks Kami for all your explanation. Keep them coming!
I wasn't a watcher of this when I was a kid, although The Waltons was really well-known in the UK. (Every single person for three generations would recognise the phrase, "G'night John Boy!") However, in my early forties I decided to effectively abandon the twenty-first century forever and haul ass back to the seventies, with a bit of eighties thrown in. A few nights ago, I decided to start watching The Waltons, bought the first series through CZcams and it's sunk a fishing hook into me, hard! This episode played my heart strings like an orchestra, especially the scene where John Boy makes the breakthrough with Holly regarding signs meaning concepts and words etc.
Love watching your memories of these, I hope you do many many different episode remininces... They just don't make television like The Waltons anymore:(
One of the great television series of all time. Thank you for doing this, Kami!
I do appreciate what you and Judy Norton are each doing with the Walton reminiscences. I like your examination of technical aspects! Speaking of the no audio from those receivers, I'm wondering about the Homecoming and Edgar Bergen listening to Fibber McGee?! What would have been fun(ny) is Edgar's character listening to Charlie McCarthy and ............ Keep 'em coming!
Yes! He brought Charlie to Jackson Hole with him and did a performance for us all.
Please keep he videos coming! I really love the sound of your voice- so clear and soothing, yet not monotone! I’m learning so many things, and it’s now become a habit for me to spend a few minutes each evening reminiscing with you. Thanks, Kami, and God bless!
I love EP about a deaf little girl The Waltons tought her sign language from a book Mrs. Mr John Walton got from doctors office
I missed your video on Sunday Dec 20th 2020 I fell asleep i woke up it was over
Me too! This is my favorite Waltons episode. I have deaf and hearing impaired friends and I know some sign language too! :)
This is so interesting. I don't want it to end. Y'all were all such good actors. Thanks and God bless.
I agree. I could never, ever get enough of The WALTONS n the cast members. I love everything about The WALTONS. They are way down in my heart where they will stay forever.
Keep these coming Kami. Loving your insights into this wonderful show.
I love how you go into such detail explaining how the lighting and the shadows were so important to the scene, and the technicalities involved, right down to the wiring of the radio. They did such a great job w/lighting because everyone always looked so fresh in terms of skin tones, and even the ambiance in the room was warm and very relaxed. Great description of the seating arrangement and also the John Boy and Holly scene was very touching! Thank you, Kami!
Hello Kami, thank you for your insight into the background of television. I recently re watched The Waltons and I noticed Judi and Michael rolling up the yarn and I remember doing that myself with my own mother back in the 1970's. My late mom was an avid knitter.
I so admire and appreciate your understanding of typical scene set up, lighting, sound and execution. Most people don't realize how complicated and involved filming TV or movies is. Thanks.
I greatly enjoy your reminiscing about this program. So pleasant.
Kami you did a excellent job playing Elizabeth.I loved when you shared your doll with Holly.
There is a continuity issue with the scene where Holly's mother runs out to the truck and then the scene inside the building. Her face is dirty outside, yet spotless inside.
Why don't I ever notice that stuff?
Kami, one thing I noticed was how comfortable you always seemed to be around Ralph, like when you were sitting in his lap & times when he'd pick you up and carry you, etc. It also always seemed easy for you to show affection for the other grownups. Did they have you children spend time together with Ralph, Michael, Will and Ellen before filming to get you all comfortable with each other? Or was that just part of your acting skills? I ask because it seems most children at the age you were in this episode are usually very shy around adults other than immediate (real) family members.
That's a really good question!
It's hard to act as a child and be shy. I wasn't remotely shy.
@@kami-cotler And yet I have heard many adult actors are shy people. I learned something about kid actors. Seems they need to be the opposite.
Great question
Would love to see more Kami..... My family would all gather to watch the Waltons. Watching this I can recall how we'd all grab our seat to watch.
Dad and MA usually got the couch, sometimes one of us could squeeze in but my Dad worked on a farm and usually liked to lie down. Then my three sisters and two brothers would share the two chairs and someone usually sat on the floor.
Who didn't like this? I LOVE every one of these. Thank you Kami. I have always hated that man. Calling his own little girl a "throwback".
I watched this original series as a young girl. I figure I am close in age to Mary McDonough, so maybe that’s why I felt like I fit right in with the Walton “kids” at the time. I had a secret dream back then of being able to go on set and actually meet the actors and watch them film, being completely naive to the process - - that, no, the scenes are not shot in order, and the yard outside of the house is in a different location than the inside of the house set, to name just a couple of my misconceptions. I’m just a little wiser than that now, lol, but these commentaries are so interesting and informative for people like me who like to learn how things work behind the scenes. Thank you, Kami, for taking the time to educate generations of Walton fans. Please do more as you are able. Our daughters sat with me and watched many episodes together on DVD’s from the library back in the 90’s and early 2000’s when they were growing up. They enjoyed them as much as I did back in the 70’s!
Thank you for doing these videos! Appreciate your time and effort putting these together.
Pleasure to see you on here. Thanks so much for sharing. Absolutely loved the show and watching religiously with my family. Fond memories indeed.
So fun and interesting to hear all of your recollections 🙂
I saw this the night it premiered September 14, 1972. I had just started 5th grade and I probably hadn’t done my homework.
@Michael Terry Interesting to know someone else has such a vivid recollection of what they were doing decades ago when a show or movie came on. Our long term memories are fascinating.
@@jenniferbrooks87 That is true. Something about the show left a strong enough impression on me that I still remember it to this day.
I am hearing impaired can't hear everything but trying fit in with hearing people are very hard I grew up hearing people all my life hard make friend I don't feel love many don't what to deal with them it very hurt even today I 61 it still hard I live alone so I go church and go car club so I can have social life
Thanks for these shows. You're right to point out Mary's acting. Y'all did a great job of bringing these characters to life. And the lady who played Holly did a perfect job. Eternally amazed at Richard Thomas as John Boy. 💙
Love your stories, Kami. Please continued on.
Thank you for doing this short insights on the Waltons.
I watched the Waltons when it first aired, and now my husband and I watch the reruns. Your behind-the -scenes narrations are absolutely fascinating! Someone like me would have no idea what goes into filming a TV series. Now, when I watch the reruns, I tell my husband, " Let me tell you how they did this...." I feel like I have secret information! Please keep thr videos coming!! Thank you. Kathy
Thank you! I loved this show so much growing up. Your character as Elizabeth was so wonderful.
It is amazing that you remember such vivid details when you were so young, thanks again Kami
Amazing what you learned and remember all from a young age. I wish I had much more memory of my childhood, so awesome that it was recorded for you to go back and look at what you did. I love these behind the scenes explanations of the art of the process, it may take away from the magic where we know how the trick was done, but at the same time provides some insight into the world that you would have seen that we the audience didn't know was going on. These videos are a treasure!
Thanks. I've had people upset at me for spoiling the magic, but the teacher in me finds the "how" so fascinating....
@@kami-cotler OMG one of the Waltons just replied to me!!!
It's odd people would complain based on the title of the video, but people today aren't the same as we saw in the TV series, everyone needs to be a victim. Watching that show as a kid with my parents helped me learn the value of family, respect of elders and helping out when you can. It's not gritty enough to stand up to modern TV, but it feels cozy and warm watching it as an adult feeling like I'm one of the family.
Thanks so much for bringing us down the road you traveled. It's like being on a Universal Studio tour without sitting on a tram.
Love your channel, brings back memories. I grew up in NC in the 1950s. I was an adult when your show was on and still love it today.
Sure appreciate your efforts in explaining the shot set up & lighting i never knew that much went into a scene, thank's for posting these amazing vlogs.
Kami. Thank you SO much for this. This is incredible. You do such a good job. I have to ask. Do you get nervous in front of the camera and what was it like to see yourself in these scenes watching the episode as a viewer?
Always wonderful to listen to your insights on what was going on. But as you know it was well done and it has stood the test of time.
Always a pleasure watching the Waltons.
Awe, love this!!!! ❣️ More we want more...
Kami this show was so interesting it was alot like helen keller was deaf and was taught sign language to speak with her hands. patti duke played her character on the miricle worker. ❤
So very interesting and so wonderful that you and the cast have kept in touch and you are describing all that is involved with the filming. Thank you. ❤
I want you to keep doing them!
I find your commentary and recollections fascinating :)
I hope she does more of these, too.
Thanks Kami you and Judy both of you show and tell us fans that grew up with The Walton's and also seeing on reruns and tell us how they do behind the scene or episode's Keep up the good work we enjoy all of what you and Judy do to tell us the fans of The Walton's how it was doing a show
You provide so much awesome detail that I would never have noticed otherwise (like the 5 different camera angles used for that scene with John Boy). Really wonderful. Thank you! ❤️
very interesting kami brilliant show x
Thank you for the rare insights into the process of making a tv show.
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and memories! Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones! ☺️🌟🎄📝📚♥️🕊️
Thanks Kami, looking forward to more of these. Take care, stay safe and GOD bless. Merry Christmas and happy New Year to you and your family and all who follow you on these vlogs.
I enjoy hearing your perspective so much! Thanks Kami! Much love 💕
I find the technical information of all that is involved in making a television series to be fascinating. Thank you for sharing.
I love watching these. Please keep up the good work.
Awesome videos Kami, great details. Please keep doing these, thanks!
I’m loving these videos 😊
This show definitely gives one a glimpse of what life was like in the depression era
Charlotte Stewart was in an episode of Hawaii Five O, and she was Ms. Beadle in Little House on the Prairie.
She also made an episode of Gunsmoke. She was a school teacher in that episode, along with Todd Lookinland, he was the younger brother of Mike Lookinland from The Brady Bunch.
Please keep going I really enjoy this. Helps my anxiety. You have a lovely voice and it is so interesting
Just to flesh out what Kami says 1 page of script is roughly equal to 1 minute of screen time. A feature film may only shoot about 2 pages a day (or 2 minutes of final product). A tv show usually works at a much faster pace. It is pretty common for a 1hour tv show to shoot an episode in a week with about 10 pages in a day. They accomplish this fast pace by sacrificing a certain amount of quality.
Thanks!
Love love this, thanks again, Kami
Thanks Kami & Happy Merry Christmas! 🎄🎍🎁
Miss Beadle! Charlotte Stewart was very pretty!
Absolutely please make some more videos my only hope is that they are a bit longer
Please keep these wonderful videos coming Miss Kami! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
Hi Kami. I really do enjoy your videos and the information about how the scenes are set up and filmed. Please continue to make these videos.
Oh, that’s too bad, that you didn’t get the audio of the old radio programs!
I love watching your videos and hearing your commentaries. I hope you will do more!
Enjoy anything you put out. We get to hear how it really was. Merry Christmas to you and your family
Thanks Kami . Merry Christmas❤ 🎄🎇🙏❤✌
Subscribed! Just stumbled across this! Thank you for taking me back! 😍
I love what you’re doing. Keep up the good work and merry Christmas!
Love this!
I really enjoy your videos. I did watch The Waltons. It was a very sweet show.. I still see that little Elizabeth in you.
Greetings from Germany!
Really enjoying these Kami!
That's a great point. It takes months to make a movie which is usually 90 mins to 2 hours long. You had 6 days to make a 1 hour long show
You do a great job with these. Please continue!
Thank you.
Best Sunday Wishes Ms. Kami
Thank you so much for sharing
Loved this Kami! Thank you.
Kami your long redish brown hair is just so beautiful and thick leave it long. you are just such a beautiful person for shareing your time as Elizabeth Walton. ❤
Well done again, you and Judy are such a treat, my personal fav. is Judy but I so enjoy your recalls as well, please keep them coming.
She was also one of my favorites. Some of my favorite episodes are when she loses Curt ( Or they made it look that way) and the episode where her ex boyfriend David prescribes her those pills so she can stay awake to study for her nursing exam. And the episode where she practically has a nervous breakdown trying to work and care for John Curtis after one of her friends turns away for a few seconds and her baby boy, who is the same age as John Curtis gets into some poison and dies. Judy is such a good actress.
@@sheriheffner2098 Yes, my grandma told me how she loved the episodes where Judy Norton shines in relaying the pain of an unknown loss. is he truly, or was it misreported. no way to know for sure at the time.
Kami thanks for another video
Well gone Kami....your voice would good for audio books......STAY safe Patrick in Ireland
Wonderful insight
Holly was so cute. You too.
Speaking of Bergen, did he ever bring McCarthy to the set with him when you were filming The Homecoming?
Yes. He did a show at the hotel lobby in Jackson Hole.
@@kami-cotler I was very afraid of puppets that looked like people when I was growing up. The only ones I liked were the ones on Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Probably because they couldn't move their mouths or turn their heads.
@@kami-cotler wow! What a time that must have been! In retrospect, I truly believe that you and Michelle Semonski (from the Welk Show) were the two luckiest girls in America!
Thank you Kami :)
How far in advance did you film the episodes to when they were aired. I guess you maybe filmed a season - but how long was it before it was aired? All the best from Cyprus.
The broadcasts caught up with us, as it took 6-7 days to make an episode. We started in June and the first episode we made would air in September.
@@kami-cotler Thanks for taking the time to reply. Always interested in any backstage info. Have a peaceful new year.
Merry Christmas and hope to listen to more exciting news on The Waltons.
Good one, showing us how the shots are made.
I notice the color of the living room walls are different shades of yellow, sometimes bordering on gray. Was this a result of lighting?
Thanks Kami
Love your channel and Judy's too! 💝
Great viewing !
