  • The Almeida fortress is a magnificent masterpiece of military engineering.
Almeida´s formerly powerful fortress is in the form of a 12 pointed star, a design influenced by the French military architect Vauban

These same forts are worldwide! Imagine the civilization and the respect they earned that had gained them enough influence to establish these beautiful fortresses in just about every country on earth, from the islands in the south seas of Asia to riversides, oceanfront and desert sites in America and Europe. I like to think the whole world got along at some point in the past, if only to use that excuse for the amazing architecture they left behind for the whole world to see

"These same forts are worldwide! "
Of course they are. They are a European invention and Europeans have been all over the world.
And they used to be the standard defense system between 16-19th century..so we would EXPECT to find them in major cities, ports or trading posts.
      -
"Imagine the civilization and the respect they earned that had gained them enough influence to establish these beautiful fortresses in just about every country on earth,"
That we find them in every country doesn't mean they have been built by one specific civilization. Knowledge tends to spread.
So the Italians came up with it..but that doesn't mean every star fort was run by Italians.
      --
", from the islands in the south seas of Asia to riversides, oceanfront and desert sites in America and Europe."
Yes..ALL places conquered or heavily influenced by Europe.
You will notice that you find NO star forts prior to contact with Europeans anywhere.
      -
"I like to think the whole world got along at some point in the past,"
People did not built fortifications everywhere because they got along so well...they built fortification because they were tangled up in constant wars or felt threatened by their neighbors.
You could say the same think about bunkers...you also find them all across the globe..but I doubt you would believe that they are a sign of harmony.

What these morons fail to realise - as they have pretty much zero understanding of anything - is that the country with by far more star forts than any other is the Netherlands. Hell there are tiny provinces like Limburg where there are more than in all of Africa (where there are only 3). So at the time they claim they were built most of NL was under water. But you can't reason with them.

If I am not mistaken, the "narrative" on these star forts are different depending where you go. In Italy they say some Italian guy designed them. In France they say some French dude designed them. In America they say that they were forts built in the civil war by the troops. Nope!!!!! These things are much older and worldwide. We have been lied to.

The fortification of Elvas in Portugal is the biggest of this kind in the world. There were only 3 passages where the Spanish and French could attack Portugal and they were built and modernized during centuries. Of the three Almeida, Valença do Minho and Elvas, this one Almeida is the smallest one but very very pretty.

    • @Jack-Hands
      @Jack-Hands Před 2 lety +1

There were multiple designers who improved each others designs overtime. That's why the forts differ in design depending on region or time period.
They claim that these forts are much older doesn't hold up. Seeing as we have medieval era maps of these towns before there bastion were built.
This Wikipedia article about the history of Amsterdam has a few good examples.
      en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Amsterdam
Compare the map from 1544 with the one from 1662 and you'll see.
And it were in fact the Italians who made the first star fort like designs. The French and Dutch perfected it.
