    10+ years ago photography was a big hobby of mine. Hobbies can fizzle out and for a long time my camera sat in a cupboard. My interest in hiking and getting the into the great outdoors was reinvigorated during lockdown, and I’m so glad I found your channel Nigel. It’s inspired me to take pictures again and fall back in love with the craft. I live on the foothills of the Dark Peak, so hope to see you out and about one day maybe!

    Another lovely video Nigel, agree entirely that nothing beats printing out your work, just to feel and see a print is what it is all about, if I could get back all the money I have spent over the years on printers, ink, and paper it would probably buy me several more Z7s but not the enjoyment.

I try to print or get printed many of my best photos and display them around , I love the comments or they will say I need this photo. I do get great comments from the social media as well....it makes you feel good. You also see your improvements in your photography by looking at older photos.

    Loved this video Nigel! The shot was incredible and I found the print bit so valuable - I’ve always felt I needed to crop specifically for A2 but even just the small bit of you adjusting to fit boarders has been massively helpful to me - I never liked how the side boarders were different to the top and bottom when I’ve tried fitting a full file to A size but simply adjusting so the top and sides match feels much more aesthetically pleasing! Can’t believe I didn’t think of that 😂 thank you!

    Always interesting to see other photographers' visualization for the final image. I would have have kept it darker with the fog for an eerie or fantasy type feeling. But, that's what great about creative license. Both approaches have merits. Having said all that, great walkthrough of your process. Love the leaving and coming back. Amazing how much that can help. nice session there Nigel. I've been helping cure someone of thinking the histogram needs to touch both sides, this is a good video explaining why. I also do the exposure extremes to see what's there and not... very helpful to know upfront. And thanks for delineating the making of an accurate record shot from creating a piece of art. sometimes the 2 are the same or super close, other times the exposure is just a rough starting point. Some like the record side more than the manipulated result, neither exclusively "photography" defines... Liked how you preserved that tree for its subtle value to the scene.

    Hi Nigel, I hope you and Pebbles are keeping well. I watched your not long after you posted it on CZcams; I think possibly two or three times. I've just watched it again (14th Jan 2023) as I'm starting to have my work printed. You are so right, Nigel, having a print of your own work in your hands, it's a nice feeling. I don't have a printer so I'm using a professional print shop and they are giving me some reasonable results but I have noticed that the print colours and contrasts are a bit off. I remember that you had a print profile set up for you by Fotospeed and I wanted to remind myself of this. I think there is another video you produced, Nigel, that went into more detail about print profiles which I need to find. I have found another professional print shop who also provide ICC codes for their print papers that I can set up in Lightroom Classic so I'm going to give that a go then send a test print to the print shop. All the best.

    • @gstandaert
      @gstandaert Před 3 lety +3

      I was wondering about that as well :)
      When I print, my prints always come out darker than expected, so I tend to slide the "Print Adjustment Brightness" slider of Lightrooms Print module up to +10/+12. I didn't see you do anything similar? That print looks great though Nigel!

    • @garyrowe58
      @garyrowe58 Před 3 lety +8

      You can't always make a screen and a printer produce exactly the same thing, sadly.
      What surprised me though is that the print looked lighter than what was on screen!
      A printer prints what it is told to, but a screen can be adjusted to be brighter or darker.
      If you make your screen too bright, then dark images look brighter on screen, but the printer still knows they are dark!

      Gregory Standaert I use an i1Display Pro, and if I leave my monitor brightness all the way up, it calibrates the brightness of the monitor too. I calibrate and edit in the dark, too, to eliminate ambient light. I have to do a black point compensation with each paper type, but I always get results identical to what I see on the screen. There's not really any margin of error if you know what you're doing with calibration, both the monitor and also custom camera and lens color profiles done with a ColorChecker. I use Lumariver software for my ColorChecker profiles.
