Zodiark is basically 50% of the time spamming darkja,40% dont take damage for nothing and 10% you can do damage.And 3000% a son of a bi%12c
This boss is way easier if you never dispel him. Dispelling him causes him to use magic paling in addition to physical paling. If you don't dispel him, he won't use magic paling, and you can just use Flare with your caster equipped with an Opal Ring to get through Reflect.
NEVER enter the boss battle with a full party. Zodiarks first move is ALWAYS Darkja (unless they changed something), it will hit the entire party like this everytime

Or, you know, don't go there underleveled or underequipped. Darkja does random KOs, but it also just does a lot of damage. So if at least one of the characters can survive that, they should be fine.
equip black mask for one character so he absorb darkja and stay alive
The 50% Instant Death still pierces through absorption.

same, got 3 characters in the 80s, still triple ko'd 90%of the time. had an easier time on the hellwyrm.
The trick to the fight is to try to one hit ko him with a Black hole limitbreak.

Zodiark is one of the most powerful if not the most powerful summons in any Final Fantasy so far. I'm not talking about how much damage is done to enemies. I'm talking real situations. It literally destroys reality with Final Eclipse all while it's still just a baby. I don't know of any other summons that can do that. I've only seen destruction of a planet and what not but never one that one shots on a cosmic scale like Zodiarks.
Yep. That’s the scary thing about it. All of the other espers were sealed because they rebelled against the gods. Zodiark was sealed because the gods feared that it would become too powerful.
I remember when I fight against Zodiark for the first time... It was like a ride to hell full of despair and fear.

Demon shield absorbs darkness literally healing your team more than half the time. This fight with three of those shields equipped is a laugh.
@@jbac5767 shows you haven't actually played the game. The spell has a huge chance of insta ko no amount of bone armour or demon shields help with that
The best rpg and final fantasy for me. There was a time a fought a secret boss a dragon located in a big arena can't remember the name, but it lasted 9 suffering hours for that boss alone...

Ahhhh Zodiark! My favorite esper because he is a Phoenix when he goes super. I thought he was easy at first until he went immune then I got pissed.

I think his Phoenix-like form is him temporarily leaving his eternal youth. He was kept eternally young to prevent him from growing too powerful

This boss fight actually inspired me in real life. Just when I thought of restarting the fight I pressed on anyways and ended up pulling the victory out of my ass. Never give up. Keep at it. Pure resolve will see you through. And black masks help. Pfftt.
That’s what I did for Ultima. I thought I was about to have my ass handed to me, but I pressed on and just kept chipping away at her hp with attacks and quickenings. Then it happened. I won.
I did realize that from gilgamesh 2nd fight and behemoth king, haven't beat yiazmat until now though
I remember that day I defeated Zodiark it was such a long process to win and I am a FFX fan through and through but this guy was so worth the trouble to claim. I will never forget that day of defeating the best of the best to have.

So glad someone else finally commented on this! You’d think someone recording a battle for CZcams would know exactly what they’re doing but so many them flair around madly in the menu like they’re having a seizure. I don’t understand.
If you get his HP low and he starts spamming paling your best (and probably only real chance of killing him) is by using the summons exodus (comet does damage that ignores shift) and zeromus for the same reason, massive damage that ignores shift.

@@TakeshiMitsuhide Once the physical pailing goes up gil toss wont work its consired physical by game standards your only best way is using magic or summonings.
Never played this game but I love FFXIV so I am really excited for the inevitable encounter with Zodiark there.

If you never use Dispel on Zodiark, you can avoid him putting up both barriers at the same time later in the battle.

I can't imagine going into this battle back in the PS2 days (I'm playing it on PS4, Zodiac Age). No autosave and 4X speed. You would have to go through the dungeon all over again if you died.
LittleMopeHead It's preety much the same on ps4. There is no autosave chance before Zodiark battle. You have to restart since the previous area AND recollect all the items especially renew

This fight is a joke with demon shield. I just cleared the game at 98%. This shit was easy. Demon shield.
I did it on PS2. This fight was a royal pain in the ass for that reason. I kept at it though and eventually won.
PS2 vanilla version FF12 were much more harder than IZJS and ZA, game has damage cap 9999, no OP weapon (which only available after IZJS and ZA), no buff weapon, armors and accessories stats plus less additional effect, no game x2/x4 speed up, more difficult obtain specific loot item and weapon since drop and spawn rate entirely different than the rest of two.

I remember summoning this esper to try it out, and the bats in those very same mines clapped Zodiark in seconds. I'm like after the fight you put up against me, you go down that easy from a few bats.
The strongest of all espers. You have my respect for beating him. And I thought Ultima was hard.
I mean it isn't tho, there's no insta-kill chance in Holyja, the only thing that makes it hard is the mechanic. You could just tank the quickening with Holy mask / robe, but her basic attack inflicts reverse (which can be countered with Esuna & remedy gambit) and you have to switch tactic from time to time because of the restrictions mechanic and the incurable HP & MP Sap
Ultima is annoying to fight because of the shifting battle conditions. Reverse caught me off guard the first time too.
I killed him in less than a minute by:
>1 party member sacrifical lamb who dispels him and dies by initial darkja
>bring in true party with 2 berserked and fully buffed DPS, 1 of them with excalibur
>1 healer
>win

I cant get into the mine to humt the last pre-Monster hunt because they keys INSIDE the mine, How do you get the key?

In the base game (not IZJS or The Zodiac Age), this fight was quite brutal! The path to him was hidden (you needed 10 espers to unlock this area), then, fight your way to him which has the game's strongest enemies (like, literally!) and once you reach him, there's no save/teleport crystal (unlike on the ps4 which has autosave). So, it was a must to have weapons like Excalibur and everyone's levels above 70. Along with that, the max damage was capped at 9999 and so was your health (unlike in seen here!)
"Base game" does not mean "original version".

If you think this is worst boss, you haven't fought Yiazmat. I fought him long time ago and I didn't google anything. After fighting for 4 hours, he casted Reflect on my party and he got renewed to full life.

Work of advice to EVERYONE out there. I had my characters at level...
Vaan: 91.Balthier: 91.Fran: 75.Basch: 91.Ashe: 75.Penelo: 75.Reddas: 88.(I recommend bringing him. Because he literally saved my life. Zodiark was targeting him mostly and banished him while my main three killed him.)
Have the battle speed start at the lowest. I started off with Penelo taking Darkja with Reddas(Who miraculously survived). Bring in Vaan and Balthier. Revived Penelo, switched her with Basch, rekt the shit out of Zodiark until ten percent, THAN as soon as you saw 'Shift'. Use your Mist! Get the highest combo possible that you can get and it should kill him. It worked for me. It could work for you. Just pray he doesn't kill any of your main three.
after playing 13 years ago i had no trouble because you just sit your weakest member in until he casts darkja, then bring in your strongest 3, make sure your heavy hitters are in beserk and beat on him until 35ish% health, then you have to chain together a massive amount of quickenings to finish him off. but when i first fought him in 2006 i didnt know better and he killed me like 100 times lmao
i fought him so many times with the same gambit setup each time
(and lost each time) and the minute i change it, i won. Never forget.

Ah yes. A boss that opens up with a cheap ass insta-kill attack that has the chance to wipe out the entire party as soon as the battle fucking starts.

Beat him after the third try, just needed to flare him a new asshole when he's 15% health left. If I'd done that in the beginning would've beat him every time.
Wait, flare is a castable spell?
Demon shield absorbs dark and for me the golden axe. Once you get him down to 20% health he will shift and not take damage, if you can catch him with your Quickening attacks, you got him timing is the key, my favorite PS2 game

Now that the moon is a thing , his Final Eclipse could be how Zodiark arrives in FFXIV

@@jonasfadi8213 I'm aware, but most of the recurring characters keep many if their design features. Obviously in this case that didn't happen and that's okay. FFXII Zodiark just has a neat design.
If you have reverse or a reverse mote, use that on yourself or your party before you start the battle, it makes the fight a cakewalk.

People playing ffxiv looking at this guy and thinking to themselves "Wait this is what the super scary evil god of darkness is based on-" right before he literally one-shots the entire party with the highest tier dark spell in the entire game must end up feeling really foolish thinking that ffxiv's zodiark isn't based on pure PTSD in videogame boss form.

Something is really2 changed in this version. I play the original ver, he's a lot more aggresive, attack more often. If u use dispel he'll cast either magic/physic barrier or faith/bravery. And he rekt you with darkja more often. Like hell until now i still didn't got him as my esper

Zodiark is my favorite summon alongside Zalera. . .even if he looks like a fish wearing a horseshoe. 😅
But it's something to think he's considered tbe most strongest summon in Final Fantasy Lore. Not in sense of damage in battle (at least by compared to others) but in what this guy can do and why he was kept in this form instead of being allowd to grow! Can you imagine his full grown form?! 😲 I have a feeling we only have seen a fraction of his power even when you can summon him and he uses hus strongest attack.

I remember this encounter was the first and only time I got the max quickening combo. Up to BS luck on the shuffle.
The worst part is that this thing comes at the end of an extremely long and difficult section without a buffer area in between for an autosave. What an evil horseshoe fish.

i remember my first time, it took me around 40 min to kill him, i got problems on the last phase when Zodiak become Immune and i didnt had rings to absorve Dark ( even that sometimes Darkja can kill you ). i'm gonna steal Trago Tower from him :P

if i remember correctly in the original game there is a shield that absorbs dark dmg, but because of how Darkja works it's like a 50% chance it will absorb or you get hit with the full frontal. I remember watching the combat log and quickly switching out gear and accessories to nullify all kinds of issues with this guy. I think there is also Bone Armor that negates dark dmg and an accessory that halves it.
No Darkja just has a chance to insta kill regardless if you absorb dark or not. That's why you enter this fight with just 1 character since he always starts with Darkja then bring everyone in after. Also the shield your looking for is the demon shield.

Thank you, I couldn't remember entirely what Darkja did but i did remember it either worked or you just got killed. I always started with 1 character after my first few attempts with him after reading a guide back in like 06.

Elite tier hunts against the likes of Fafnir and Behemoth King is a great challenge for the late game, especially for people who are not into level grinding. All the hunts involving the depts of Pharos Subterra
I've been at that thing since the game came out the very first time from back in the day he's the only one I can't capture. So I will give it a go on old system again. When I get ready to buy the updated version of it I scratch my head all over again.😎
Larsen Griffin This video will help. It shows you what to do, and also what NOT to do.
One obvious case of the latter is at the start of the fight. NEVER enter the fight with a full party (like what they did here) because Zodiark *_will_* kick off with Darkja every time the fight starts.
Another good idea is equip stuff that negates/absorbs Dark elemental attacks. In the original, I had Black Mask and Bubble Belt on EVERYONE, including reserves in case Zodiark got lucky with the instakill effect and wiped the first crew. You can't stop it, but you CAN do something about the raw HP damage Darkja inflicts. Absorbing it is the best way as those who survive the side effect go back to full HP.
Also, try and use a Quickening immediately once you see Zodiark use Shift, because after that point he erects the Paling - and KEEPS it up for the rest of the fight (though I got super lucky one time and managed to use a regular attack to kill him after he dropped the Paling. Don't count on this happening with you). After the Paling goes up, your best bet is to use non-elemental spells to hit him. Also DO NOT LET HIM KEEP REFLECT! That buff can bite you in the ass if you don't Dispel it immediately.
cameraREDeye Also if you use dark absorbing on everyone on your team then Zodiark will use Darkja twice as much. So have Black masks on 4 characters instead of all 6

I remember how i had the biggest wth is this moment first time i seen this on ps2 lol a fish wth
3 characters with the Holy Lance, Excalibur, and Wyrmhero Blade with as many White Robes equipped as available... then pre-buff those three characters with Berserk, Bravery and Haste. This strat makes it impossible for the Esper to do anything but get fucked on. Just don't enter the battle initially with your buffed characters and you're good to go. You're welcome
Haste, berserk, bravery, critical health, genji gloves, wyrmhero blade, and that ninja sword with high combo rate that I forgot the name of says hello 😝
Even in this video the amatuer goes in with a full team...none of which are leveled equally or properly...also with a whole team which is the biggest "No-No". Yiazmat simply takes time nothing else once you level properly (80 or so) everything else falls fast as fuck.
This guy is nothing compared to his Trial mode version. Now that's a fun and fair battle.
Not with all those traps littered across the arena.
We all know how unfair a boss Zodiark is.

lol, that man doesn't know that he should fight with only 1 of his weakest characters in the beginning, i killed this esper without even giving him the chance of making everything immune, Berserk was the KEY :D
Took me a total of 2 minutes to defeat him at level 60 solo basch, All you need to do is have him use Excalibur, bubble belt, brave, berserk and you're done, he'll take about 15-20k a hit.
First off. You enter this fight with only 1 person. Second Demon shield is your best/only chance at absorbing the darkja and converting it into Health.
The bgm > anxiety.
