Palestine, known in Arabic as فلسطين (Filasṭīn), officially the State of Palestine (دولة فلسطين, Dawlat Filasṭīn), is a historically rich region in Western Asia. Its earliest inhabitants were the Canaanites around 3000 BCE. It witnessed the rise and fall of Israelite kingdoms, and conquests by Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks under Alexander the Great, and Romans, who renamed it Syria Palestine. Christianity spread under Byzantine rule until Muslim Arabs conquered it in 636-637 CE. It later saw Crusader and various Muslim dynasties' rule, becoming part of the Ottoman Empire in 1517. Post-World War I, the British Mandate of Palestine led to increased Jewish-Arab tensions. The 1947 UN partition plan proposed separate Jewish and Arab states, resulting in the 1948 creation of Israel and the displacement of many Palestinians (Nakba). The 1967 Six-Day War led to Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, central to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Despite the Oslo Accords in the 1990s, aiming for peace and establishing the Palestinian National Authority, a lasting resolution remains elusive, with ongoing political, social, and economic challenges.
