    Immortal songs created by the best music team. One of my most favourite films. R.K. Narayan-my favourite author, Wahida Rehman-my favourite actress and Dev Anand- one of favourite actors. I am emotionally connected with the film. I must have watched it at least 50 times. I grew up listening to the songs in my father's record player. In college I had English Hons. and studied Guide as well as Narayan's Biography.

    Thanks Jatin ji for your wonderful presentation. I would love to fill a few gaps, which are left in your narration. Director of the english version of guide is Tad Danielewsky a polish American director. The British lady you are talking about is actually Pearl. S. Buck, a noble laureate in literature, who was co-producer of the English version of movie along with Nav Ketan. In fact it was her idea to make film on the novel written by celebrated author R. K Narayan as she was highly impressed with the book.
    Chetan Anand was the original choce for directing the film, who refused as he was busy with his home production "Haqeeqat" Raj Khosla was the next choice, who backed out because he felt that the character of Rosy (Waheeda) was too independent & against the accepted perception of Indian women. Vijay Anand was actually the third choice. Vijay Anand had reservations about the original script of guide, on basis of which the English version was being made & refused to shoot the movie simultaneously. He started working only after English version was completed.
    Initially S. D. Burman was not at all keen to compose music for the guide because his health condition was very poor. Dev & Vijay Anand both actually forced him to take the project because they very well knew tha no other music director could do justice to the script ,they have in hand.Vijay Anand even threatened to quit in case SDB doesn't join the bandwagon. Most of the music was composed in reality from hospital bed. Gata Rahe Mera Dil was composed and shot after the fina l editing was completed at the behest of Dev Anand because his one time ghost voice Kishor Kumar has again started singing for other actors than himself after a long gap ol eight years(1957 to 1965).Basic tune of this song was composed by RDB because at that time SDB was again hospitalized & was not in position of taking heavy load of work.
    Hasrat Jaipuri was the original choice as lyricist. He departed because some creative difference he had with the both director and producer. Actually Hasrat had some different perception Of the character of Raju guide which Vijay Anand did not like. The first line of Din Dhal Jaye was originally written by Hasrat Jaipuri . Later Shailendra developed into a full song.
    The night before the Filmfare award was announced, Nargis, who was probably a member of the Filmfare jury board, made a phone call to SDB and congratulated him for winning the award but actually it did not happen. Name of SJ appeared in final list. Reason still unknown.

    Each song from guide is a gem and the music pieces created by Burman Da are a category apart. The intensity in the song Din Dhal jaye, the melody and music of piya tose naina, light yet so mellifluous songs like kaanto se kheech kar and gaata rahe mera dil, ferocity expressed in mose chhal kiye jaaye and divinity dripping from Burman Da sung wahan kaun hai tera...and not to forget other songs which were equally good.

  • @sharadvyas3422
    @sharadvyas3422 Před 2 lety +6

    "Piya to se naina lage re "
    Apart from its superb lyrics and excellent melodious music, the best thing is that, Goldie has very smoothly elevated Rosie to famous dancer Nalini. The process is so easy going that nobody realises that this is a nine minutes long song. Any other director would have done this taking much more time, and with jerks. That was Great Goldie in song picturisation. Hat's off..

    The anecdote concerning the song recording of Din Dhal Jaaye is fictitious Jatin Sahab. That song and Tere Mere Sapne were in fact composed and recorded by Jaidev, who was initially selected as the MD for Guide, owing to the success of Hum Dono. For some unknown reason, Goldie and Dev decided to hand the assignment to SDB several months into the project and Jaidev was relegated to an assistant's role.
    Those with a discerning ear will notice that these two songs have an utterly different feel and vibe vis-a-vis the other songs on the album..

      @kaushikmukherjee671 Před 2 lety

      I can't believe this.You are telling a nonsense story.Jaydevji was a great composer & worked as an assistant of S D Burman.These two songs entirely belongs to SDB.

    • @tangibleemotions7
      @tangibleemotions7 Před 2 lety +3

      @@kaushikmukherjee671 Learn to express yourself with a modicum of decorum, lest it reflects upon your upbringing.
      That Jaidev was initially the MD for Guide is an esoteric fact which anyone with a keen interest in old HFM can confirm. Indeed, several magazines of that time comprehensively narrate the anecdote as well as noting the point that the two aforementioned songs were Jaidev's compositions.
      If still in doubt, refer to the following article by Shaji:
      shajiwriter.blogspot.com/2010/02/jaidev-loneliness-of-unsung-music.html?m=1

      @pratikdasgupta5263 Před 2 lety +1

      well, I really beg to differ with you … yes you are right that Shri Jaidev (a wonderfully talented composer) was in fact an assistant to S.D.Burman … BUT you need to hear SD's songs, specially "GHUM BHULECHHI NIJHUM E NISHITHE" which was later recorded with Hindi lyrics in Rafi Sir's voice … you'll see the difference in rendition - the feel, I would say … and then you'll also understand that S.D.Burman has had composed songs like DIN DHAL JAAYE earlier also. So I guess saying it was Jaidev Ji's composition would rather be a blunt statement. See, neither you nor me were there to vouch for it … we can only understand musical nuances only with our deepest conscience. By the way Jaidev Ji has great respect for S.D.Burman … I hope you have seen his interview available in this platform

      Jaidev had been SDB's assistant since 1953.Guide was all along SDB's. Jaidev was given Hum Dono as after SDB cleared it. Those two songs are very much SDB's creation, with inputs by JD as assistant.

    Nice to see you after a long time.This video on Guide is excellent.I think film fare awards is a farce.They actually insulted S.D.Burman.In mid sixties there was subtle rivalry between Raj Kapoor & Dev Anand.Raj Kapoor used to control the film industry a lot.Shankar-Jaikishen duo was an automatic choice for his every film.That way the duo deprived many deserved composers.For example: woh koun thi(1964) by Madan Mohan,Guide(1965) by S.D.Burman etc.

    Jatin ji. Thanks a ton for the nostalgia. Aapne Filmfare awards ke bare mein 100% sahi kahan. Filmfare ki izzat bar jati. Even "Pyaasa" (1957, SD Burman) was not in shortlist for Filmfare award on film Music (playback / background). BBC listed Pyaasa as one of the greatest movie albums ever (globally)... Just imagine. So much about awards in our country unfortunately. I always believed even YOU (Jatin-Lalit duo) didn't get justice from filmfare / whatever awards (at least when I see the list). I mean you didn't win for DDLJ..!! Neither for 'Pehla nasha...'. Just bewildering... But it is in our hearts that you rule... nothing can take away that. I think this is the key word of the song which Rafi Saab gave wonderful breathy tone to the word only not to the entire song. Who told Him to do this I am sure it is the God with in Him prompted to use it.

    Why can't We make such songs now? May be bollywood can't support music now like before, due to great changes in methods of marketing & social changes. Very nice. Who was 1966 filmfare award music director…if it was SJ, then it was obviously tough competition ✌️but you are absolutely right, SDB a genius MD and Guide’s music was out of this world. This so call Bollywood industry is corrupt and look at 1964: music went to Doati while Sangam’s music was out of this world.

    My uncle took me to Music Shop in 1969 to buy a Record Player as birthday gift and left me free to to buy records. My first purchase as 9 year child was 3 Long Play records namely Guide, Jewel Thief and Navketan mixed songs. This music is still integral part of me.

    Very nice presentation by Jatin Bhai about brilliant music of film Guide, SDB, RDB, Lata Ji, Rafi Saheb & Kishor Da..
    Jatin Bhai also produced many modern gems in his music direction with Lalit Bhai, the duo adapted RDB style of music, the violin symphony and orchestration all seems as RDB relived while the duo enthralled the audience. It is learnt that duo were close to Pancham Da and learnt a lot from him while assisting him. We would like know about their association stories through Jatin Bhai himself.
    We are eagerly waiting for comeback of Jatin-Lalit duo, to get taste of Pancham Da.

    Hello Jatin ji 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽.
    You are simply great. I grew up listening to SD RD and Jatin Lalit who made us to enjoy our lives thru music...
    U rightly said many best musics of SD RD and even you should have got Filmfare awards but it's unfortunate really.
    Nevertheless, generations ahead will be listening to SD RD and Jatin Lalit also.
    Every piece of music is so carefully crafted by you all maestros. Real inspiration to us. I listen only music of SD RD Jatin Lalit when my energy is down. We don't need energy drinks rather I drink your music and get refreshed.. I like nuances you all have put in your melodies and interludes you gave to our generation from 90s to date 🙏🏽
