Then after being defeated he was still calm because he knew he had a deity backing him which explains why he would feel victory was inevitable. And at that moment we finally get to see the malicious look in his eyes as if he's spearing you in the gut with Giratina by his side. Basically what Game Freak did was.
Using Cynthia's legendary career as a Ptsd Inducer.
Using Cynthia's intro music as battle music, which thanks to her 5th gen surprise visit it became more synonym of the second coming of the Grim Reaper than her actual battle theme.
Breaking Not only TWICE the law of only 6 pokemon for battling but on top no heal between.
    It's just magistral.

My top three Pokémon battles of all time are now: Gold vs Red, Cynthia's Gen 5 surprise, and Volo.
I was NOT prepared for Cynthia popping up in Pokémon Black but somehow managed to push my way through first try with my level 63 Samurott and 5 super unlevelled Pokémon that were thrown out as cannon fodder so I could heal Samurott. Considering her team was all level 75 and are all pretty busted as it is, I don't know how I got through with just Samurott.
And that made Volo's fight even more amazing for me because I chose Oshuwatt. I was originally going Cyndaquil ever since we first saw the starters for Legends, until it came to actually picking. There was just something about the way Oshuwatt was looking at me that made me go "Actually, I'm picking him."
And now I know why. Samurott wanted to come with me once again to take out this bloodline in battle.

I suspected Volo of being a twist villain from the first time I met him in Jubilife Village. I looked at him and how he talked and thought, "Oh, he's gonna betray us later." After that, the game gave me very little to support that, but it stuck in the back of my mind. I talked to a friend who was further in the game than me and told him, "I'm trying to play with no spoilers, so don't react to this AT ALL, but Volo gives me bad vibes. I think he'll be a twist villain?" and all they said was that the final boss was kicking their ass over and over.
Finally I got to the end of the game, got banished and helped by Volo, and eventually caught both Palkia and Giratina... and Volo was redeemed in my eyes. After how big a help he was, I totally didn't suspect him of anything at all. In the postgame, hunting down the legends, I saw it as totally in character for Volo to help.
Then we got to Mt. Coronet and he spoke about Arceus and Giratina and how much he hated his childhood and I realized, "Oh... I was totally right from the beginning." Followed by climbing to Spear Pillar and revealing HE opened the Space-Time Rift (which I expected to go totally unexplained!), and then the piano...
I screamed. He revealed his new clothes and Cynthia's theme started, and I screamed. And I sat there, stunned. I didn't even let it get to the theme proper, I heard the intro notes and was too stunned. The scales played and then all went silent until I recovered and pressed A and the battle began, and the music proper continued.
And he kicked my ass. He kicked my ass 9 times in a row. The only way I managed to beat him after so many tries was to go back, get to Star Rank 9, and use the 10 Rare Candies to shove my Alpha Garchomp to lvl 100, and even then, I only beat Giratina by the skin of my ass.
    Absolutely epic boss fight.

This is such a good analysis! The story buildup, the character, the Pokémon, the music, the cutscene, the battle, the reward. I love how you shed light on every little aspect that makes this fight stand out, especially the part about his Pokémon and the intentional concealing of his suspiciousness behind Cynthia's familiarity was very well explained imo. I do love the fact that Volo's battle often results in an "eye for eye" battle trading pokemon back and forth, it makes it feel like a real challenge and threat. I will never forget my first attempt to the battle: Trading pokemons with Volo by constant revenge killing until only my weavile and scizor remained, then giratina comes in. Scizor goes down putting a good fight leaving giratina under half hp, weavile strikes him down with a crit night slash. "That's it, that was hard" I though as Giratina eyes suddenly glared red and a solo guitar kicked in, transformed into origin form and oneshots weavile with aura sphere.
I didn't felt bad or frustrated for loosing, instead I felt so hyped. Pokemon has never done something like this, and getting my ass beaten after such an epic battle with 3 freaking phases when the usual thing in pokemon is to steamroll anything in your way felt SO refreshing and good.

I was kinda of irritated by the way the battle system played out in the final fight, just one shotting each other back and forth since I just brought a team of alpha pokemon I caught that were at the same level as volos team. It was just boring and there didnt see to be any room for strategy in this fight beyond hope you are bulky enough to survive a attack from one of his mon's and get a knock out advantage on him or just grind a solid 10 level advantage. It seems the combat systems invalidates bulky pokemon from being effective and even with a heavy speed advantage using a agile form move I was never able to out speed his next pokemon after a knockout. I suppose that the battle system has just become more simple perhaps, although it being much faster paced then other pokemon games which is a good thing.

    • @Otrsor
      @Otrsor Před 2 lety +4

@@liampokemaster Pretty much, the change from turn based to CTB combat does not help pokemon combat at all. Removes a big portion of the strategy and end ups creating this back and fort trading of pokemons, the biggest issue comes from the fact that you cant input atacks, items, or even swap pokemon when the one you have in the field is too slow to have the initiative which in turns removes any kind of counterplay and enforces trading pokemon after pokemon.
A cool mixup of turn based + CTB with pokemons having their turns for attacks be directed by the current system but adding a turn based input for trainer actions (items and pokemon swaping) could fix most of those problems tbh. Lucky the game doesnt have pvp cos would be absolutely atrocious with the current system.

I like to think that Cynthia knows about Volo and his connection to Giratina either because its a dark family secret or maybe because she simply researched him. After all in Platinum she seems to be the only person to know of Giratinas existence. Maybe she sought out Giratinas help to stop Cyrus at Spear Pillar. That would explain why she only shows up after Giratina had already taken Cyrus to the Distortion World.
And the fact that she basically replicated his team (aside from Hisuian Arcanine which simply doesn't exist in modern day Sinnoh anymore) shows that she has some sort of admiration for Volo but unlike him she wants to use her knowledge to help protect the world.

Volo to Lysandre: Oh, you're a villain alright! Just not a super one!
    Lysandre: Yeah? What's the difference?
    (Giratina appears behind him)
    Volo: *Presentation.*
Okay, now that I got the meme out of the way, WHAT A FIGHT THIS WAS! I was one of the lucky few who actually won because I prepared and it STILL managed to tear me apart. Giratina is supposed to be a crazy strong, aggressive, and deadly Pokemon and it managed to do that flawlessly. Volo's character was written in such a way that I NEVER considered him a plot point. Well, until I was spoiled by a Mixeli THUMBNAIL. But even when I knew... I had doubts. He was just Cynthia's great grandfather, right? He's exploring myths, doing what any researcher would do, hypothesizing, and being a little cheeky in the process. I relate him to the Happy Mask Salesman from Majora's Mask. He is a twist villain done RIGHT. And that whole argument of "Oh I knew he was the bad guy because he taught you the back strike" is absolute hogwash. What makes a twist villain obvious is giving them a hairstyle that screams "HEY LOOK, I'M A MAJOR PLOT POINT!!! HAHA I'M SURE YOU WON'T EXPECT ME TO BE RELAVENT LATER!"
I think giving Volo a hat was the best thing they did. Well, not just that, but his design says, "Hey, I'm a trustworthy and friendly guy." And will consistently do things to gain your trust. The yellows and blues in his modest outfit says nothing extreme. While Lysandre looks like he's got a crocodile skin chair behind a black and red table, with ashtray that is a little dirty from all the cigars he smokes. And the minute I saw Lusamine, I thought, "How is this crazy woman going to mess up the environment?" Then Rose... you get the picture.
Volo? He has no organization. He is the silent knife in your back that you never see coming and he now contends with my favorite character along with N and Guzma.

Dickson moment at Temple of Sinnoh when he said he was just gonna hang back while you dealt with Sinnoh, but instead you get a whole postgame with him and building up to his betrayal and I love it so much.
My favorite thing about his battle though is how personal it feels. No other Pokemon main villain is close enough to you in your journey, and with the reveal that he’s the one who opened the rift it changes everything about your relationship because he’s the whole reason you (and poor Ingo!) were stolen from your original worlds, and he doesn’t even seem the least bit apologetic. Volo could spout nonsense of “I love this world, so I must rebuild it” or his “friendly” attitude with Rei/Akari and everyone in Jubilife could be his way of manipulating the people around him. Togepi/tic/kiss probably just saw his “love” for the world and listened to his nonsense. That’s deep for Pokémon. But maybe I’m just reading too much into it.

Three things with the music that I especially love.
When the battle opens you get a grandiose opening as Volo sets Spiritomb to fight. throughout the game you have seen three of his Pokemon. a Togepi, a Gibble, and now a Spiritomb. chances are if you recognized Cynthia's music you also recognize half of her team. then silence as you throw out your Pokemon to face him. only once the battle begins does the music resume with that iconic piano. something I feel is missing in a lot of remixes and uploads of the music honestly there is just something missing without that moment of silence.
"Face me then, for I have nothing to lose and everything to gain"
When you beat Volo the music used is not only the title screen music from dppt, it doesn't resolve into anything and just hangs there leaving the tension of the battle unresolved.
"the battle isn't over yet, you can't relax now"
Then with Giratina entering phase 2 along with the guitar riff to open Giratina's platinum theme is a beep at pace of a heart beat. a beep at the same tone used throughout the Pokemon games to alert the player that your Pokemon is at low HP and about to faint. "something is about to die and it ain't Giratina"

The entire climactic series of events towards the end of this game's story has got to be one of the best things constructed for a Pokémon game in a very long time. My first time getting to that point of following Volo around and realizing how batshit crazy he turned out to be was amazing. All of it leading up to the inevitable challenge at Spear Pillar. There was no amount of preparing I could have done to have actually been prepared for this battle. I was already at the edge of my seat playing through this part, but then that Cynthia music kicked in. I was now losing it. I lost my first attempt, no shock there.. I didn't bother to bring healing items as I hadn't really used them much for the playthrough.
Round 2 vs Volo I did some team management and brought some healing items along this time. I still wasn't prepared for what was to come. I beat Volo's 6th Pokémon, but it quickly became clear what was coming next. Giratina came in, and after some trouble and realizing I couldn't catch it yet; Giratina took me out.
Round 3, I thought 'well cool, Knowledge is power.' I just didn't know enough. I didn't even level up or anything, I just went straight back in with better team management to be sure I had enough to take out the Giratina. I was down to 2 Pokémon left and took him down. Had such a feeling of great accomplishment washing over me as I watched his HP drop. And then that cutscene and the swelling of music hit me... There's not a single word that I could use to describe the mixed bag of emotions I felt at that moment.
In all of my playing Pokémon history, this is the first time I've had to work this hard for anything. And I LOVE this game for that. Eventually after a little more leveling up, Round 4 vs Volo and Giratina would be my victory, and the taste it left in my soul is perfect.

That Togekiss is the sole reason I was able to beat Volo.
In the final battle, Togekiss has a moveset of Calm Mind, Moonblast, Air Slash, and Extrasensory, all of which are resisted by Steel. I also noticed that Volo was willing to switch Pokémon, and would counterpick for good type matchups. After realizing this, I would swap my Pokémon around to bait him into counterpicking against those Pokémon, so that eventually Togekiss was the last Pokémon left. Than I just sent in Heatran, and just revived and healed my entire team while letting Heatran tank hits, occasionally healing it to stall longer.

So glad you were able to put into words the incredibly climactic feelings of satisfaction and perfection this battle had, especially the points about future ramifications in giratinas “character”. Idc what what anyone says, this game is as perfect a Pokémon game can be

I loved that battle so much, even though it took me like 2hrs straight to beat it!! It was phenomenal

My favorite part is that when you win, the game tells you that "you finally beat Giratina" meaning that the devs knew you weren't likely to win this battle on your first try, and its also referencing how Giratina gets back up after being beaten in altered form.

I love the fact that my fight with Volo ended with my level 60, 5% health, Liligant dodging an attack and decking Giratina's lights out. It felt like an actual anime ending.

I LOVED this battle. ugh everything about it was just. Amazing.
You feel betrayed by Volo's true colors.. then chills when the MUSIC comes out. and any veteran pokemon player would instantly recognize the music along, and the lastly as your brain is piecing all of it together, You see the first pokemon that's thrown out- everything instantly makes sense and suddenly you KNOW who he is without a doubt. / if you havent suspected it already.

I loved this battle. I somehow managed to pull through on my first attempt (with the help of revives), but it's one of the few battles in pokemon that genuinely felt difficult, and unexpectedly so, with the double giratina twist.
