  • May 13, 1950 is the most important date for Formula One as it was the first ever championship race here on these legendary grounds of Silverstone, England, United Kingdom.
Of the 22 drivers on the grid only one has won that memorable day and it was the Italian Giuseppe “Nino” Farina of Alfa Romeo who later went on to win that entire first season of Formula One and became the first of so far two Formula One world champions from Italy.
Today he starts tenth on the grid ahead of his teammate five time Argentinian world champion Juan Manuel Fangio (1951, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957). Will he turn it around and make today be another memorable day for both himself and the British Grand Prix?
We will find out in 52 laps on this classic 3.4 mile, 18 turn circuit.
Especially considering this race marks the home Grand Prix of five drivers and five teams. Jackie Stewart (1969, 1971, 1973) of Tyrrell, who is really Scottish starts in second place today behind pole sitter German four time world champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013). Stewart’s South African teammate Jody Scheckter (1979) starts in twelfth.
Tyrrell just announced ahead of this Grand Prix that starting in 2025 they will receive major sponsorship with Italian clothing brand Benetton, meaning we will see a Benetton livery returning next season and onward.
Meanwhile, Williams’ Jacques Villeneuve and F1’s first and so far only world champion from Canada (1997) starts in third with countryman Nigel Mansell (1992) in 21st.
McLaren’s Flying Finn Mika Häkkinen (1998, 1999) starts in sixth while the first and so far only French four time world champion Alain Prost (1985, 1986, 1989, 1993) starts in 8th. Brabham’s namesake Jack Brabham (1959, 1960, 1966) starts in seventh while Austrian three time world champion Niki Lauda (1975, 1977, 1984) starts in seventeenth. Both of those teams really originated from both New Zealand and Australia respectively. Finally Lotus’s Brazilian two time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi (1972, 1974) starts in eleventh while Scotland’s Jim Clark (1963, 1965) starts in sixteenth.
As for the countrymen who compete in foreign teams, Stevenage born seven time world champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes (2008, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) starts at the back in 22nd due to an engine change and Renault’s Jenson Button (2009) starts in nineteenth. There will without a doubt be a very memorable moment that Silverstone always deliver.
