- University of Missouri--Columbia, Swallow Hall 4/17/2024 Department of Classics, Archaeology, and Religious Studies. After a 4-year hiatus, beginning spring of 2020, I have resumed my ancient Greek hoplite presentations focusing on phalanx weapons and tactics of the Classical Period of Greek history. These lectures are Helleno-centric in nature and derived mainly from Greek sources. No bows were harmed in the filming of this presentation. Please visit www.thehoplites.com for more information. If you are a college or university looking to add flavor to your classics or history department's lecture series, please contact me for scheduling and fees. I am also available for corporate speaking engagements highlighting the principles of teamwork, tenacity, grit, and winning as the underdog against the backdrop of the Hoplite.

Man, I've missed these. I'm glad you are "back" Mr Castile. Please keep em coming. 🤙
Thanks!
@@gamalcastile No problem, glad to see you are well.
Glad to see a comeback! I've always loved your historical presentations and as a Greek I can recognise PATHOS when I see it! I hope you can do more because you clearly love it!
Ever get sad when a video is over... :(. This guy really is a great teacher.
Thank you! I always wish I had more time to just keep going.
@@gamalcastile would be amazing to see you do a Joe Rogan-style 3 hr podcast and go in-depth on this stuff. Or even just on your own. But thank you for what you have given us; I can't wait to see more.
Also I gotta get back to gym so i can look that good in hoplite Armor too XD
@legionreaper8486 thanks! I'd love to host a History Channel show about Greek history.
Oh man, awesome. He's back! Hercules is back
Guys guys! He is back.
👀 !!
WE ARE SO BACK
Thank you for such an informative and visual lecture. I believe you are doing the best reanactment of this era I've ever seen
I appreciate that--doing what I love!
It's great to see that you're posting these fantastic lectures again, I'm listening to this while making my first ever pair of Greek sandals for the battle of Plataea reenactment in July.
I would love to go to that!
HE'S BACK
Great presentation! Not only historically accurate but also practical. You must do it to fully understand what our ancestors did.
Best regards from Argentina!
You are clearly in your element, glad to see you back it. Thanks for the digital lecture
Glad to see you back!
Wasn't expecting this to pop up today! Will watch it when I have the time, can't wait!
I'm glad to see you're back! I'm going to Greece in less than two weeks and this is quite an enjoyable way to prepare!
Very cool video! Thank you for making it.
Glad you're back at it.
Awesome Gamal. Loved your stuff for years and glad you've done another.
Love seeing this come back, I've always loved these videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
Glad you enjoy them!
Fantastic! I'm so glad to see another one of these long form presentations after so long, they've been sorely missed.
Greetings from Costa Rica!
glad to see you back
been waiting a couple years for this one
Hope it was worth it!
Good to see you back!!! I'm sending this to my son since he also likes Ancient Greece as well.
Good to be back doing what I love!
@@gamalcastile I just sent this video link to my brother's colleague in Hamburg, Germany. Ingo. He also has a passion for history.
Yes another video thanks again for representing my culture
Always love to see fellow historians and interpreters doing well. Great presentation!
Very entertaining, professional and accurate !
Thank you so much sir! I have been waiting for your return for a long time!
Love your videos, enthusiasm and knowledge! Keep going because you are the only one I know of that offers this kind of information!
Thank you so much!
Would love to have an historical greek armor and arms
thanks
I wouldn't question if he accidentally time travelled from Sparta, Greece, to Sparta, Tennessee and had to learn English and teach College kids about Ancient Greece for a living.
Hello! As a character designer this is absolute gold information. 20 minutes in and ive taken so many notes about the names of the shields and the types of armors they had in greece!! The curbed shield holding up the spear is just so ingenious. I look forward for future videos and thank you sp much for uploading! . The instructor is just amazing at explaining things !♡
Very glad you found so much value in it!

Oh man, I wish I had known! I'm only 2 hours away from MU.
Too bad! I did advertise it on my Facebook
@@gamalcastile Darn, I'm not on FB anymore. Is your history stuff on IG?
@@christopherbartley6400 I rarely use IG anymore
Weak croud, what a shame, but AWSOME VIDEO!
Love your videos, good work
From Portugal siuu
Pretty good. Though the kids got him on padding for the grieves. Padding underneath is mentioned in the sources & is depicted in ancient artwork. Besides I've worn them in reenactment & you'll regret not having it if you actually wrestle around in the stuff. Lol
It's so nice to see tyler1 out of league of legends
I wonder if anybody ever tells this tyler1 that he looks like the Hoplite guy who looks like Vin Diesel?
@@gamalcastile lmao
Glad to see that you are finally back. I myself am into Greek reenactment, despite living in Denmark, and I'm currently looking to buy hoplite greaves while being on a budget. Am i right in guessing that those are greaves from Deepeka which I can see in the background?, and if so, would you recommend those?. Kind regards from Denmark :)
They are, but unfortunately I would not recommend them as they aren't that well-fitting or accurate. Try Lyba Steel Craft. Theirs looks more authentic.
@@gamalcastile Thank you for the quick response, I will definitely give them a look. From prior experience I will probably be much more happy saving up for something of a higher quality and comfort, as running around up to 5 hours a day in something that doesn’t fit right quite right is not very comfortable. Thank you very much!
Growing a cow for the leather would be easier than growing flax for linen?
your source about the persian soldier would interest me and how he conquered Minor Asia, Egypt
including Assyria and Milet
btw why did he not hook with his hatchet?
Herodotus gives a pretty good description of the Persian and Mede soldiers’ equipment in his Histories, Book 7 Chapter 61 and 62

with scales of iron like in appearance to the scales of fish, and breeches on their legs; for shields they had wicker bucklers, their quivers hanging beneath these; they carried short spears, long bows, and arrows of reed, and daggers withal that hung from the girdle by the right thigh.
Those btw are Archers, Bowmen the Persian Cavalry is missing
and his force was 1.700.000 men strong yes as belivable as what he did to Pthys son
I think i go with Delbrück who estimate a much smaller force of IIRC 100.000
